Request to join the wonderful 'Spector Bass Nation' on Facebook and there's sure to be someone helpful on there who can give you a first hand review.
+1 Also I see that BassDirect has one fretted and one fretless on stock, probably worth a visit.

Suggestions for aggressive sounding nickel strings
Paulhauser replied to markdavid's topic in Accessories and Misc
Hi, have decided to broaden my range to stainless steel strings as i think i may be more likely to get the aggressive tone i am after, how are Daddario pro steels for aggressive tone? Thanks
They do sound bright and with a lot of attack, one of my fav SS strings. Also quite comfortable (for example I lover the rorosound Swingbass66 but that is just too rough for daily use :-) ) The D'A nickels are also bright, one of the brightest nickels out there that I've tried, though they seem to loose their top end quite soon - in my experience. Great selection for gauges though. -
No offence taken to your comment. But TheGreek makes that comment about Spectors at every opportunity he gets - every single time he sees a thread about Warwicks. On a side-note; I saw in another thread he's after a black tuner for a Spector that he wants to enter as a raffle prize for a bass-bash. The funny thing is I've got one from a Warwick. It would do the job..... I'll be keeping it too
I had many basses throughout the years, tried almost everything and it turned out that Spectors are the best for me in terms of ergonomics, playability and sound. (and looks :-) ) I personally am aware of that issue between Spector and Warwick but I never cared for it really. I think it is a kind of water under the bridge and there are so many more important things to discuss about Spectors (or Warwicks or other basses) There are some people who keep having a problem with that issue and I'm fine with that, too.
Brutal? Have you ever even seen a Spector in the flesh? Whatever the argument, the NS body shape is far from brutal. Ergonomic, flowing and organic, maybe. Yes, the Warwick body shape is a refined version, but they had to 'refine' the top-horn in order to.. well, we all know why.

Having owned both a Streamer LX and a Spector Euro, I'd say the Spector was by far the nicer version of the NS design. The Streamer was an amazing bass, don't get me wrong, but I'd take the Euro all day long.
I agree. For me the Spector NS shape is the most ergonomical design and "brutal" is not really the word that describes it the best. Also I happen to like the Streamer, Ww put out some amazing ones, but I prefer the original NS design and Spectors in general. Once had a Thumb NT5 from 1991, it was lovely but could not get used to the ergonomics of it (neck) Also the sound was a bit thin for me. Works great for fretless tho.

I really like the reversed P on my Spector NS. Just like some said before it kind of warms up the D G and adds more attack to the E and A. Would be nice to A/B test the same bass with the original P positioning, maybe it is not a big difference.......
If you're considering investing a major wedge, the Spector Shorty is likely to be of interest - dark punch and superbly designed and playable. If you're considering parting with an obscene wedge, an Alembic brown bass punches like little else. Balance is weird but construction and tone are incomparable
Spectors are great! I almost bought your Spector Shorty when it was for sale, but glad that you have kept it (AFAIR)
I quite fancy an Ibanez SR500 (although I am tempted by Grangur's SR740), but the finish on most used SR500's seems to wear off really easily. Can the finish be removed and the body refinished? Has anyone attempted this?
Go for Grangurs 740. That bass blows any SR500 out of the water. I had a 500 and while I liked it, these older MIJ Ibanez basses are the real deal (have two MIJ Prestiges myself)

Just received a bass that I bought from Bris. Everything went really well and smooth. Great comms all the way, Bris is a nice chap and he made the whole transaction easy. Should you sell to or buy from Bris in the future I'm sure you will experience the same. I would deal again with him anytime. Thanks Bris and BassChat!

Spector uses 35" for their 5 string basses, unless you order from their US shop and choose differently. Two things to clear up here. The bridge end of a B string can be tapered or non tapared. D'Addario has bot, Elixir has both and a host of other string makers offer this option. Spector bridges are notoriously narrow for a .135 string to fit unless you use a file or use tapered strings. The tapering at the tuner end is for the tuner peg having less 'bulk' on it. So if in your case the tapering starts before the nut ( say, over the first position) then the string is made for shorter scale basses, most likely for a 34" Buy a string that is XL, extra long, D'A does it. My Elixir strings fit on my 35" Spectors wi/o issue. What note do you want to tune the 5th string? (the low "B") I'm not familiar with the drop C. Normally .125 works well for normal B tuning on a 35" instrument. I've used .125 on my Spector and dropped it to A sometimes and it was ok. But to be honest, I lkie my .135 Elixir better. Anyway, hope this above helps.

Refurbishing a bass to sell. Is it worth it or just sell as it is?
Paulhauser replied to Painy's topic in Bass Guitars
Sell it as it is with a honest description so the buyer knows what he's getting and can add up the cost of the fix. Who knows, he might have a fitting bridge and/or an expert at fret dressing so what you'd spend on the bass to fix things up may not worth the extra cost (and increased price) for the buyer in this instance. I personally would not do anything but sell the bass as it is with all the info (pics) so the buyer is safe. -
Sorry for the slight hijack but I'm also looking at a Spector as a possible option, albeit on a lower budget. How would you rate the Legend 4 Custom? I normally play Warwicks but the prices are just ridiculous these days (that said I'm also considering a Rockbass Streamer LX but the finishes on the Spectors look a bit less "cheap"). I'm looking for something half-decent to keep strung BEAD.
In my experience every Spector is very good at their price level and the Legend Custom is no exception. I dare to say you get more bass for the money as with many other brands. Since the Customs are discontinued I assume you are looking at buying used, right?
I second this. My Euro 4 was the best bass I've ever owned and I miss it dearly. Tone-wise IMO, they are utterly untouchable in a rock setting. Snarl, crispness, presence, bags of punch and a focused bottom end. Absolute bargain at the price they go for.
Exactly. Actually, if the OP has 1500 GBP budget, he could buy both a used Spector Euro4 and a used Fender Geddy (which is a great instrument, too. I had one) This way the jazz territory is covered, too. With a J, a P and a Spector you are covered for anything really.

For a rock band it is hard to beat a Spector. Queensryche, Alice in chains, Skid Row, Cannibal Corpse, Judas Priest and a host of other well known and iconic rock bands' bassist all used and still use Spector basses. I'd say you go for a EURO 4. It has PJ pickups, active electronics, slim neck, contoured body. They'd fit into your budget even new, but used they go around 800-900 GBP (or less sometimes) It will give you different tone options compared to your P bass.

No, this is NOT a TRB6PII (MARK 2) This is a TRB6P from the first series, just as the seller states. It has the high-mass bridge as opposed to the monorail bridges that are on the TRB6PII. Also the pickups are narrower on this as on the TRB6PII. Also it has 5 knobs plus a switch whereas the TRB6PII has 6 knobs and no switch. TRB6P's from the originial series are mostly coloured (trans red, blue and orange and blue occasionally), a natural one like this is quite rare. The TRB6PII's are all natural, using maple, bubinga or ovangkol top and back, and ash in between. I advise the seller to measure the scale lenght, as it has to be 33 7/8" (cca. 860mms), not 35" (889mm) This is a great bass by the way!

I had a NT5 from 1991, the most un-ergonomic bass I have ever had due to what was said above: the 1st position is really far. The sound was thin and while I wanted to like that bass as it was nice and with some tweaking I could get some useful tomes out of it I eventually sold it. I think I sold for around 1000 GBP or such. Interestingly some of the best fretless sounds I've heard were on Thumb fretlesses.
No matter how I try I cannot find the remotest, miniscule GAS molecule for anything Gibson. I know, they are iconic, I know they are a part of bass history. Help me here..............I just don't get it.
Neither do I. Never had the remotest interest in any of their basses. So you are not alone in this :-)

My Monday morning could not start better than with a package waiting for me in the office with the bass in it that I bought from Tom. The whole deal was easy, the bass was very well packaged and arrived intact. I'd deal with Tom anytime again without hesitation. Props to Basschat!
