1. Here are my two FGN Neo Jazz's These are made in Japan and are of superb quality.
2.
That's really interesting - do you think that a wider neck, say for a 6-string, could have an effect on the way a low-B plays?
While this question was not directed at me, I have to say that my old Yamaha TRB II6, which is a bolt on bass with 35" was one of the best B I have ever tried and used. I tend to think that the mass of the neck does contribute to how a B string is sounding, but that might be just a false observation. I own two 6 string Ibanez basses and while they are 34" bolt ons the B string sounds very good on both of them. This B string issue is world in it own, so many opinions and variables, the best bet is to make your own opinion by trying basses.
3. I like it a lot! I'm a sucker for block inlays so thats a bonus for me. (and just like the OP I don't like black basses......)
4. US made neck through Spectors have one of the best B strings in the business and they are very strong in that mid-range just like how you have described. While Spector has been associated more with rock/metal players it is used in many other genres as well, check Doug Wimbish for example. Also certain MTD models with the right wood combination could also be a solution, the ones with less sizzle on the top What I'd do is first to narrow down the options. Then use this budget to buy used basses from the makers that seem to be ideal. The goal would be to try them by using them for a while and gaining experience. I'd buy wisely so I could pass the basses with relatively low cost and buy others again. And then maybe after a period of one year and 6-8 second hand basses later I would probably be able to get exactly what I want and need. You are about to spend a sizeable budget on one bass and if you choose well you can have a bass with no compromises that is will serve you for long.
5. For me there is absolutely no problem to have a six string, in fact I own two fretted sixers. I like th additional range for tapping and chords but I'm not sure I could use a fretless sixer just as much. While tapping is possible on fretless I'd leave that to a fretted bass and chords are more tricky than on a fretted one. So that pretty much kills the advantages FOR ME. But if you wish to make a try then go for it, what can you loose, especially if you shop wisely?
6. Problem is that i have far too many dream basses but only so much money :-D
It's never late to get your dream bass
7. Thanks JassBass. Original post is updated and pics now added. All pics can be accessed here https://www.dropbox.com/sh/rj68dc1dv550h5f/AABtXFQrXoWj_nEMRlvjp_Roa?dl=0
8. Where was this bass when I was looking for an alder/morado UV 5 in this exact color?
9. Hey Bris, nice bass you have here! I'm a fellow Spector player, my Euro5 used to have this exact black stain finish (since refinished) I especially like the black hardware on this. Good luck with the sale!
10. I used to have on of these in trans red color. At that time I had managed to collect more instruments that I was able to use / justify to keep so I have sold it. But as a lover of japaneese Yamaha TRB's I have always hold these models in high regard and I remember the rich tone of that TRB5P to this day. Also the neck was really lovely. All the best with this sale, someone will be getting a great deal and a hell of a bass, too!
11.
Total tangent, but this your playing/band? As I thought this was pretty cool with some really nice bits on the bass! I really love the Gary Willis basses, really bums me out, that I just don't get on with 5 strings.
Yes, this is used to be my band and it is my playing with an Ibanez GWB35. Glad that you like it, thanks!
12.
ie that kind of dull mid range thud, I don;t want my bass to sound like a double bass ( which I have also owned along with a Wal)... I want a bright punchy tone, but with fretless neck....
For your information, the GWB35 is an ACTIVE bass with a bass/treble boost/cut. In the video below I play a GWB35 in an exreme metal setting. While neither the song nor my playing is particularly good, it does take a bass just like what you want to get out from under the walls of guitars. I have nothing to sell, but I think that the GWB is a great moderns sounding fretless. https://youtu.be/iNSluhDEN2I
13. Ibanez Gary Willis GWB35. Light, narrow spacing, lined, active, thin neck and has very strong mids. i speak from experience. Even new its within your budget.
14. Could entertain trades for a Stingray5 as well.
15. If you are on the market for basses that have less than 16.5 mm spacing at the bridge then the GVB36 is pretty much the only choice. I was in your position some time ago and apart from going custom the GVB is the only bass currently in production that is available to a certain extent and has less than 16.5mm spacing. I know this is not really helpful or an aswer to your question, but thought I add my experiences.
16. Dear All, I'm thinking about letting this bass go to make funds for another incoming Spector. I use my modded Euro5 and this one sees limited use. In fact I never took to gigs or rehearsals at all since I have it. Anyway. This is from the SSD (Stuart Spector Design) era when he was fighting for the use of Spector brand and that dates the bass to the late '90. The NS5-CR is the predecessor of the Euro (and later, Euro LX) line, all of these were and still is made in the Czech Republic. The main differences compared the current Euro LX line: - 34" vs. the current 35" - full maple body wings vs. the current alder/walnut/maple - EMG preamp vs. current TonePump - abalone dot inlays vs. current crown inlays As an addition info, this bass has the EMG DC pickups, neck through construction, contoured body and high gloss finish. The EMG is a BQ preamp with bass and treble boost/cut. The sound is very strong and clear but not aggressive. The condition is pretty good for a 15+ years instrument. No missing finish, chips or big dings. Smallre swirls, microdents can be found and the only visible sigh of the ageing is the discolouration of the gloss finish on the front of the headstock. One of the small screws missing form the truss rod cover. Frets could use some levelling at certain positions, but that may be because I use a very low action. Neck is very strong, truss rod works fine and all in all it is a great instrument.
17. Very fair price for this bass. I have owned two Californias and while I sold them I think they are great basses in this price segment with lots of options and are well built. Somebody will be happy with this.
18. These are great basses. I had one for some years and the Barts in it and the wood combination gave me a really even sounding bass in all registers. I especially loved how broken-in Rotosound steel strings sounded on this bass. The neck is quite slim and narrow for a 7 string and the whole thing ballances well due to the well designed locations of the strap-pins. I always regretted the fact that Conklin did not produce a 6 string version of the GT (only 7, 5 and 4) That would have been a near perfect bass for me. Good luck with the sale!
19. Hey Mike, wonderful bass you have here. being a Spector player I'd love to buy this but priorities are not short scale basses this time for me.. For those looking to buy this bass: Mike bought one of my basses last year and could not have wished for a smoother transaction. Great gentleman to deal with so have all the confidence.
20. If string spacing is and issue then Spector, Cort, Ibanez SR and Yamaha JM2 have all quite tight spacing (16.5mm for Ibanez, 17ish for Cort and Spector and JM probably 17.5 IIRC) I have owned them all. Ibanez BTB's have larger spacing just as the older Japaneese TRBs like the TRBII6 which is 19mm. Owned BTB and TRB6II, too. BTB had a chunky neck I did not like. TRB6II is one of the best 6 string I ever had and if you can source one used they will be around your budget and well worht every penny. Spector Euro6 is a great bass with quite beefy neck. String spacing is around 17mm. Can be over your budget even used, but not much (800ish)
21. James, there is a Hungarian luthier MLP who makes excellent basses that are customizable to a large extent and I think you could get a lot of bass even within your budget. While I think that Fodera is not only a body shape or some marketing hype or such MLP does a a good job that is based on Fodera amongst others but has its own take as well. Fodera Artist Tamas Barabas helped a lot launching some of the models so there is an other Fodera inspiration/connection. Check out their YT channel for sounds: https://www.youtube.com/user/MLPCustomBass/videos http://mlpguitars.com/
22. TJ, you have a magnificent example of a Dingwall here. I'm at the moment Dingwall-less, but this would be a very good choice if I could have the possibility to buy it. Alas, I can not, but have a free bump on me. P
