I don't often say Fender and Wow in the same sentence but...

I have a hard time understanding a lot of things Fender does. -

They've been doing it for a very long time. I wouldn't buy one, but they sell and continue to sell. https://www.thomann.de/gb/search_dir.html?sw=Fender journeyman bass&smcs=2046df_20106 -

I'm actually a Fender hater. Maybe hater is a bit harsh, because obviously they make some great basses, but there's just something about them that simply doesn't do it for me. I'll just say I'm not their biggest fan. -

Seriously, even $2,000 might be okay with Play Now, Pay Later...of course, it would mean $2,400 or $2,500 by payoff time. Other than that, I had a build a few years back that I still regret selling...a bit more pink, Korean pickups and electronics, but hey, it sound just fine and felt even better. -

I didn't buy it. Other than that, I have four jazz basses and they're incredible. -

Saw this one at Russo Music, a local shop. Fender Custom Shop '60s Jazz Bass NOS Rosewood, Faded Shell PinkFender Custom Shop '60s Jazz Bass with AAA rosewood fingerboard, handwired single-coil pickups, and Fender Custom Shop New Old Stock finish treatment $4,300.00 -
Tried several but the output just seems so low. Other than that, I go with either of these. The Italia Imola is probably my favorite of my four jazz basses and the Dean Exotica acoustic bass is more versatile than most solid-body basses. (Gotta love the JC in Sapphire Blue, though, and you definitely don't see too many white ones! Very cool video. Nice to see you're using proper strings.)

Yes, the pick vs fingers thing is totally without merit.

Yes, I've noticed, but it beats the hell out of 2,358 slapping videos!

You can always go this route.

Thinking about finally buying a bass with a burst finish, but which one?

That's sheer perfection! -
Some people are putting down the new Squier, but I like it, very somber...I think the black anodized aluminum pickguard really helps. However, it won't be out until April so I'm considering something from the Fender Custom Shop. The only thing is, I can't decide on which burst. Any ideas on which way to go? Vintage burst, tobacco burst, antique burst, violin burst, sienna burst, amber burst, brown burst, mahogany burst, mystic burst, bourbon burst, cognac burst, black lager burst, 2-color sunburst, 3-color sunburst, chocolate 2-color burst, chocolate 3-color burst, teriyaki burst, mocha burst, anniversary burst, retro burst, autumn burst, burnt umber burst, raw umber burst, caramel burst, cafe noir burst, walnut burst, chestnut burst, hazelnut burst, macadamia nut burst, western saddle burst, cat's eye burst, agate burst, root beer burst, birch beer burst, wurst burst, tar-bubble burst, English breakfast-tea burst, blood-pudding burst, Baked-Alaska burst, Boston-baked-bean burst. Like a kid in a candy store, I just can’t decide!

New or used, you can get something really nice for that kind of money. Word for the wise...don't settle for less just because you might be able to find something good for half that money. In fact, you might find something for a little more, and if it speaks to you when you plug it in, if it feels so good you don't want to put it down, don't let another 50 pounds stop you from buying it. I have some very nice high-end basses, but I decided to buy a Squier back in September, than, just two weeks ago. I saw another Squier I couldn't pass up. Both were used, but both turned out to be better than new. The one on the left cost $150 more than it did when they were new in 2015. The one on the right cost $100 less than when they were new two years ago. Sometimes it isn't about how much a bass costs, though, it's about how much a bass is worth. I'd suggest either one...Squier Classic Vibe or Contemporary Active. My other basses have been collecting dust since I bought these two!

Then it will be interesting to see the results if you do decide to strip the headstock. I prefer both as they are with tje blck headstocks, though. I have to wonder, however, why Fender didn't go with roasted maple for the P bass.
-
It's not just you, but that bass looks great as it is! A finished headstock looks great on my Squier...wouldn't have bought it otherwise. Regardless, Gibson and Reverend both use black headstocks and they look much better than those unfinished ones. Unfinished headstocks have ruined enough basses, in my opinion...not talking about maple, of course. Only one thing though...if you remove the paint, even doing an expert job, and then find the right Squier headstock decal, will the stripped headstock match the roasted maple fretboard or will it be much paler, ie, not roasted?

You're right, in no way do they lag behind the Player Series basses. I've tried a few dozen Player basses and not one moved me enough to reach into my pocket and pull out my wallet...I wouldn't even buy a new one if they were $500. Both my Squiers put them to shame as do most of the 40th Anniversary Squier basses...easily 5 or 6 I could see myself playing, both the passive and active ones. The truth is, the Player basses are unexciting, the very definition of meh.

Good luck! Hopefully you can start playing bass instead of playing games with the store.🤔

With that nice maple neck, you might want to go with GHS or D'Addario black tapewounds.

It's a simple observation, but I guess only certain opinions count, right? Other than that, it's certainly no different than a piccolo bass, so... (Edited, my initial post if that helps.)
