Wow, and only $4,000?

I think it's going to be hard to return this one!

I'd be satisfied with any of these.

The thing is Fender knows they're going to sell basses like this...they don't care who buys it, a player or someone who just sits there staring at it rubbing his hands together like Ebenezer Scrooge. If I want something special, I'm sure not going to buy a generic black Jazz bass with a white pickguard, I'm going to buy something truly distinctive.

Never played one, probably never will, but if the Japanese Squiers are as good as some Fenders, I believe it, because my CV is better than any Fender MIM I've ever played, including the new Fender Player Plus basses...even though I've only played three. Of course, my Squier has D'Addario black tapewounds on it, so that definitely enters into it. Seriously, if I saw this James Johnston Jazz bass hanging up at Guitar Center, Sam Ash or any other shop in my area, and the price was $599, I'd buy it...if it played and sounded as good as mine. Something else to consider...is every Chinese CV Jazz the same, or are there exceptional models? I definitely believe the latter. As for price, I'd like to see what they sell for five or ten years from now, specifically the Inca Silver and Lake Placid Blue models.

I've never bought a bass as an investment. Really don't care about making money selling a used one. If the listed price was $500, I'd consider it...after the holidays.

Not too many three-pickup basses around. I liked this when it first came out, not enough to buy, but..

I was a flatwound fan until I tried tapewounds...ten basses, black tapewounds on eight of them. I'm big on GHS. Nothing wrong with flats, I used nothing but until a few years ago, and I sometimes doubt if I would have progressed as a bassist using roundwounds. Good luck, and your fingers will thank you.

When I bought my Inca Silver Classic Vibe Jazz bass for $500, quite a few people questioned my...prudence. After seeing this James Johnston CV for $699, and that's after a $100 markdown, I feel somewhat vindicated.

Someone actually bought it a few hours ago! Trying to check with Geddy. He pretended like he didn't want to buy it, but three phone calls and a dozen texts and he just won't respond!

When asked what he thought about this new Masterbuilt Jazz model, Geddy Lee said: "It's absolutely beautiful. I'm honored that Fender would go to such lengths." When asked if he'd be buying it himself to add to his extensive collection, Mr. Lee hurriedly looked at his wrist and said "Sorry, running a bit late. Have to catch a plane!" It was noted by this reporter that he wasn't wearing a watch.

Most people will tell you "Just buy a Musicman!" However, plenty will tell you the Sterling Ray 34 will get you close enough to the Stingray sound, and for only $900, I'd be more than happy with this. Best bass Sterling has to offer, by far.

I'm still in awe of the Thundergun. That such a quality bass can remain relatively unknown, especially in today's world of internet communication, is somewhat hard to believe. As for the Squier, not exactly a beater bass, just a bit of a joke calling it that.

Some bassists have more, some have less, of course. Other than that, there's no way just one or two or even three would work for me. The last two are expendable...very nice basses, but.. (Just sold my Epiphone Thunderbird Vintage Pro last Sunday to someone who'll play it every day. Better than sitting in a gig bag, right?)

I bought this one some years ago when I first started playing. Still one of my favorite Fenders...don't buy into that "Fender PJs don't sound like a real P bass and the J pickup is weak!" nonsense. This is still one of the few Fenders I could see myself owning and I regret selling it.

I wrote Fender a few years ago telling them to change the name from Sonic Blue to Barely Blue and they told me it was a ridiculous suggestion!

Ridiculous name, but more and more eight-year-old kids are playing bass these days, so... Obviously aimed at spoiled rich kids who tell their parents they want it, and they want it now! Doesn't matter if it's forgotten two or three weeks after it arrives...it's meant to collect dust. Other than that, what do we have...an Ibanez Jet King copy with the Atlansia ARC pickup. Let's not forget, whoever made it suffers from LAMS. Not to mention that's not clown vomit, this is...

I wish they'd bring back the LPB '50s P bass. Seriously, Blonde or Two-color Sunburst? I mean, I don't expect this, but...

More metal-flake basses! (By the way, I set it and forget it!)

What about the Kiloton? Passive but potent.

I can't imagine Squier making anything quite as good as the Crafted In China CVs from 2015 or so, but these are a step in the right direction.
