  1. The large neck pickup had 4 individual coils and was quite fat sounding, although the position of it had a lot to do with that. It had individual trim pots for each coil, I believe Bassculture make a version of it. The rear pickup on the original was not a single coil but a hum canceling split coil.
  2. Anybody remember the old Magnum basses? I loved them especially the early I & II which had a really interesting body shape. Obviously too radical as they changed it for something more normal (as above) for versions III & IV. Came across this one the other day and have been procrastinating so it's probably gone, but an interesting version. I'm not a fan of bolt on necks so was quite intrigued to see they did a set neck on this prototype, and just left the '4 coil' pickup in the hot spot. Played these a few times back in the day (always someone else's) and always wanted one, then a while ago I bought one on ebay while I was living abroad. Unfortunately personal circumstances took a turn and I never picked it up or got it delivered (I know!!) so never saw it (or got my money back but the least of my issues at the time!). So, an unfulfilled dream but maybe the reality of the real thing would be a let down? You should never meet your heroes!
  3. Rounds are not the only way to go! I love my jazz with flats on. There's a flat string thread going on over in general.... don't get involved it'll just f**k with your head... just enjoy what you've got.
  4. Just had a look at the bumblebee, it's certainly cheaper. Looks well made, I like the adjustable build but the space under the top deck looks tight for pedals... maybe ok for a psu but not a tall pedal. Among the pedals I use I have 4 that are connected to aby switches, consequently they don't need to touched and can be tucked away. The waggi fly18 looks good for this purpose but it is quite expensive, although you do get a steel case built in so ultimately could be a good deal.
  5. Yeah, it's a bit of an investment but I'm liking the 2 tier idea and there's not too many options out there on that front.
  6. In terms of low tension the Galli Synthesis are good.... in fact they are sooo buttery. Currently have them on my Squier jazz, I started a thread on them over in 'misc' including a clip.
  7. Anybody got experience with Waggi pedalboards? I liking the look of the cable management and the 2 tier to tuck away psu's and pedals routed thru loopers. They look well made too.
  8. This is not a list that bass players would necessarily put together. What is interesting is that this is a list of how non bass players see bass players.
  9. Unless they were in the Zombies!
  10. I haven't read too much about that period but it certainly doesn't sound a very coordinated album. Mind you it sounds like JBs drinking was always an issue. I remember reading a story about journalists on tour with the band and they were told that sometimes JB might get violent when drunk but it was just something they had to put up with! No excuse for that behaviour no matter how talented and famous you are... although unfortunately it was his undoing in the end.
  11. Oh, just noticed/ read that JT has been given Bass Players lifetime achievement award... they also mentioned the 'over 100 million' albums sold, so maybe that's a factor?!
  12. There's an interesting interview with John Taylor in bass player this month... hasn't convinced me he's the best bass player in the world for '21. Still, makes for interesting lighthearted debate though!
  13. If you don't care and don't care to explain why you don't care maybe you should not care sufficiently to just keep it to yourself!
  14. I have never enjoyed rounds. They never cut through in a mix and I don't feel they add much to your tone. Flats 4 life!
  15. Lists like this are quite fun if only for introducing me to Dirty Loops and highlighting Lee Rocker's trip across America in an airstream. I'm biased here, but for me there's never enough mention of upright jazz players. My shout would go to Nick Blacka from Gogo Penguin for their approach to micro-compositional playing.
  16. JPJ & JB have always been a huge influence on my playing and Zep played so infrequently in the UK it was an exciting weekend. I was too young to catch them in 75 at Earl's Court so wasn't going to miss them at knebworth. My friend didn't come as he didn't like outdoor gigs and was going to wait until they played a venue.. a big mistake. I remember the new album hadn't been released in time for the gig. Anybody here a fan of 'in through the out door'? There does seem to be a lot of dodgy guitar work on it, especially the intro to hot dog, which if I remember correctly was terrible played live. Seemed a bit of a scrappy album, were led zep on their way down by then? Certainly Robert Plant seems to have plenty more music in him but not so much Page, other than dodgy sound tracks to dodgy death wish movies, seems to be in an endless loop of remixes.
  17. It's one reason I've always liked playing in a trio as it brings the bass to the fore. An analogy told to me by a sound engineer always stuck with me; if you only had one spotlight for the stage, at whom would you point it? Of course, the egotist singer!
  18. Yeah, relative pitch something you can work on, perfect pitch not something I'd want to be lumbered with!
  19. It's never occurred to me to keep a bass if it genuinely needs shims. At that point it's one step beyond.
  20. Well, not quite the same but at least it's on dvd now
  21. The knebworth gig is available on DVD now. Apparently the original recording was affected by an audio bleed which modulated the video. Digital technology has sorted this out so you can enjoy it in all it's glory.
  22. Doesn't do 4th & 5ths, but a cog T65 does an octave down, octave up, plus some overdrive.
  23. They were still good! I remember Led Zep played for about 3 hours.
  24. PS. Chase & Dave support Led Zep! They were good though.
  25. Anybody remember these gigs? Just found my old program.
