Hi, I'm looking for some advice on a headstock I'm trying to restore. I picked up a cheap old Hohner P Bass with a maple neck. It looks like it has been stored in a damp area and the headstock lacquer is cracked, and flaking off. The fretboard also has a lacquered finish and has a couple of small patches where the finish has lifted off. I could probably live with that. Any advice on how to remove the lacquer? In an ideal world I wanted to retain what's left of the decal. This would rule out sanding it down. I heard that acetone would remove the lacquer - after which I could re-apply a fresh layer or two? Any help gratefully received...

Now SOLD Up for sale in excellent condition - John Falstrom's EADG 4 Bass theory Book Not easily available in the UK, this came direct from John in the States. Nice simple “Lo-Fi” presentation. £25 Posted (UK) From the author… EADG 4 was written with the intention of teaching the bass guitarist what music theory is and how it works on the fretboard of the bass guitar. The approach in writing this book is unique in the fact that it does not include any musical notation, tablature, or diagrams. It uses finger patterns, charts, and definitions on how to play the bass. EADG 4 contains studies of the major scales, the natural, harmonic, and melodic minor scales, chord arpeggios, the modal system, harmonics, double stops, chordal studies, the standard 12 bar blues form, and much, much more. It is written with every type of bassist in mind - from the beginner to the advanced pro, from the "street" player to the "school" player. This book works for everyone. It is spiral bound with 236 pages

NOW SOLD Up for sale, this nice Lindy Fralin Split ’51 Single P-Bass pickup. This is the 5% overwound model, which yields a slightly thicker, darker tone. Bought new from Bass Direct for £135 I had this on an old Lawsuit bass and it sounded lovely. I swapped it out when I sold the bass, which has left this pickup without a home. It's a real shame not to use it. For more "era authenticity", the A and D poles are slightly raised. NOW £80 posted in the UK. For what it's worth, this is the Blurb from the Lindy Fralin web site... Our Lindy Fralin Split ’51 P-Bass is a great single-coil tone replacement for 50’s and reissues. Loud and clear, with no hum. Using USA-Made parts and made by hand, our pickups sound leaps and bounds better than the stock pickups. This is the Hum-Cancelling version of our ’51 P-Bass. Our combination of authentic 50’s P-Bass tone and a Left-Right Coil Design give you killer tone, with no hum! With no modification necessary, the Fralin Split ’51 will drop right in to your era-authentic bass or re-issue with ease. This pickup will fatten up your bass up a bit, too. The Fralin Split ’51 is our hum-cancelling version of our Fralin ’51 P-Bass Pickup. Era-Authentic 50’s P-Bass Tone, No Hum Split-Coil Design 42-Gauge wire AlNiCo V Magnets SOUND: Warm, rich, full, with no hum. The top end is warm and round, the the low end is extremely full, deep, and rich. The Fralin Split ’51 is the perfect pickup for those who want era-authentic 50’s P-Bass tone with an added hint The low end is extended deeper than before – with some AlNiCo V sweetness added to it. By adding a second coil, we were able to achieve a completely silent operation, with a hint of fatness added to it. The “pushed-in-by-hand” AlNiCo V Magnets are just part of the equation that gives this pickup such a smooth tone.

Couple of quick questions about pairing my Subway D800 with Beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO headphones.... New neighbours have prompted me to spend more time practicing through headphones. The DT 990 Pros are 250 ohm impedance – the D800 manual notes that the headphone output will drive headphones between 8 – 32 ohms. Has anyone here paired these headphones directly with the D800? Is there anything I can do / add to maximise the sound quality if the DT 990 impedance is too high? Should I be looking for alternative cans?

Now sold. I've had a couple of enquiries offering a lower price for this unit. I'm willing to drop down to £68 which includes postage to the UK. Listed elsewhere too. Up for sale this great and well respected little HPF unit from Rafferty. £75 includes postage in the UK. From Rafferty's promotion; The HPF Pre-2 is a very handy utility tool, predominantly for Bassists. This little box is a preamp with controls including an adjustable high pass filter, independent volume control, and a phase switch. This box is a great tool for some sound related issues bass players can experience using amps or PA systems, by tuning out subharmonic thump and wool, and focusing sound in general. It has a filter cutoff adjustable from 35hz to 140hz, and runs using a standard 9v centre tip negative supply. I got this last year and it has only had light home use. Only selling because my new amp has a good HPF built in.
