Hi, thanks for tarring us all with the same brush! EDIT: Let's not forget some shameless self production COUGH

Glad to hear you're getting back into it again after a long (inconceivable for me, as I've only been playing for 10 years) hiatus. Best of luck!

That kind of joy from playing an instrument... it's infectious!
We'll have them in stock shortly. Feel free to pop in and try them out!
Ooh, could 'shortly' possibly mean 'this week'?

Bassists who don't play on their bands records?
Huw Foster replied to MacDaddy's topic in General Discussion
What about the bass line to Red House by Hendrix? I've heard (more than once) that Hendrix played it rather than Redding, but it sounds to me like two separate basslines anyway. I'm guessing that Redding played the 'low' line while Hendrix over-dubbed the 'high' one.
I think that's not actually bass - I'm fairly certain Redding played it on a baritone guitar, or something similar. -
Was good seeing LCM graduates in both Jamiroquai (horn section) and Everything Everything (the drummer) on TV. Jamiroquai's set was a little disappointing (in terms of song choices), and I've got mixed feelings about the impending album, judging by what I've already heard. Here's hoping the Friday set is better. Also, does anyone know who the guitarist for KT Tunstall was? It wasn't Charlotte Hatherly was it? CAN SHE GET ANY COOLER?!

Joshua Redman with Flea doing Led Zep..
I was listening to some Chili peppers stuff in our shop yesterday and thought: Why do people think Flea isn't a good player? He has an awesome groove and technique. An original and remarkable style, too. You would recognise him instantly.
Flea was the influence on me as a fledgling bass player. I was also fanatical about the Chili Peppers during my teenage years. Although I don't listen to them much at all of late (broadening of taste, their latest output is nice but inoffensive, etc), when I do occasionally revisit their older material (Blood Sugar Sex Magik is almost 20 years old(!!!)) it's like a revelation all over again. I can't believe I forget sometimes how good Flea is - just listening to some of his isolated bass tracks (links in that thread at the top of this forum) proves it outright. Solid as a rock, and unmistakably Flea. That reminds me - I'd quite like to see Thom Yorke's band (Atoms For Peace I think), of which he is a member. Anyway, I know that Joshua Redman version of The Crunge. Pretty good, although I heard it/played it too much at my particular music college. (If you've not heard that album before, there's another track on it called Greasy G. Me'shell Ndegeocello plays bass on it. It's filthy.) -
I'm so very glad Prince isn't so ruthless with the removal of YouTube videos anymore. About a year ago, I wouldn't have had a chance of seeing gems like this: The main section of this song, regardless of the over-indulgence at the end, always gives me chills. To have that supplemented by a massive John Blackwell and Rhonda Smith rhythm section is perfection IMO.
IIRC Steview Wonder wrote that tune!
Yup, he sings the middle 8 too. Pretty sure Nate Watts laid down the original line. He's a bit good, isn't he?
I can't get Cheryl Lynn's excellent track, "Got To Be Real", out of my head as it's doing the rounds again on TV (M&S ad?) but I'm pretty sure it's already been posted here in the 'F&G' thread. So instead, especially as it's Toto backing her on that track, I thought I'd put up Toto's very own "Georgy Porgy" which originally featured Cheryl Lynn. However, this is an excellent live version from 1990. Lukather in fine form on guitar and vocal, dear Jeff Porcaro drumming; the band is cookin'! (Not sure who the female singer and two backing vocalists are. Apologies if Georgy is already posted here somewhere, too! )
Yes! That version is sick. Love the alternate harmony in the verses. And David Paich is disgusting.

Later with Jools Holland on BBC 2
Huw Foster replied to yorks5stringer's topic in General Discussion
It's increasingly mercurial these days, but that might be down to my taste conflicting with the line-up. He also shouts a lot more. -
I have the same bass, they are ace. So is your playing on this video, actually pulled a bass over my laptop and joined in. Wicked, very tight playing.
Ah cheers, appreciate it!

Recorded this afternoon: (The bass is a Classic 50s Precision, bought from a fellow basschatter a few weeks ago and it's possibly the best impulse purchase I've ever made )

New Jamiroquai tune. It was available for paid download off a Dutch website (a bit early?), so inevitably someone put it on youtube. Haven't made my mind up about the song yet, but of course Paul's groove was the first thing that stood out!

Oh no, this is terrible. I've been too busy to visit the forum lately, so I've only just seen this. Every successful forum seems to have a handful of members that are an establishment. Si was one of them, and for all the right reasons - in my brief virtual encounters with him, I don't think his genuine warmth could have been more apparent. And I didn't even meet the guy! This place won't be the same without him. RIP.

Bought John's Classic 50s Precision earlier this week. Absolute pleasure to deal with - seemed to put up with my tedious questions very well! On top of that, it's a stunning bass, exactly as described, and it arrived promptly in seemingly bomb proof packaging. Basically, highly recommended!
I have an old copy of Double Bassist magazine that has an article on preparing for auditions. I will look it up and, if I can find it, will scan a copy and email it to you (or photocopy and post).
Ooh, if you do manage to find it and scan it would it be cheeky of me to ask for a copy too? Even though I ended up on a performance-based degree, that was only after defecting from a production degree after one semester. So I bypassed the audition process, and every one I've been to since has been a bit shaky. Good luck with your auditions benzies! I can't offer any other advice than what's already been said - just relax and don't try to show off. Make sure you show you can do the rudimentary stuff really well, and then anything above that is a bonus I suppose?
-
Love this tune. I'm only a minute or so through and can already say your tone and feel = wow. Band's performance is ace too - done the song justice. It's a shame you can't have 5 Michael McDonalds supplying eerie backing vocals.

Recently bought a Legend of Fuzz pedal off Robin. Great comms, and swift delivery!

I've been here a little while now, and done a few exchanges in the marketplace. Most of them have been me buying, and not a whole lot of selling, but that'll most likely change in the near future. Cheers! Huw
