1.
I saw a Stentor some time back - in fact, I had considered trading it + some cash for my Gage (then saw the light! lol) It certainly wasn't a small proportioned bass, and the endpin extended beyond coping with me at around 6'00".. perhaps the smaller basses are the Stentor Student range? Does anyone here own a Stentor Student bass? It'd be worth knowing whether they're full size
Our guitarist's Stentor Student 2 bass is currently living at my house - I can make some measurements if you like? It's definitely a 3/4 sized bass though.
2.
I looked at the Stentors when I was searching for a bass, something like 12 years ago. I don't know if this is still the case, but I remember noticing just how small proportioned all of their 3/4 size basses were, to the point that the endpin didn't extend far enough for me (I'm about 6'2"). It's not necessarily a negative, just something to consider.
That may be why I like them, I'm a total shortarse.
3. 10 years? I remember when it were all Bassworld round here....
4. Thwaites in Watford used to have a good selection of used Eastern European instruments at the £1000 mark, but looking at their website, that doesn't seem to be the case any more. May still be worth giving them a call to see if they have anything in though. If you're prepared to wait for a bass, then I'd definitely agree with others and suggest that you go for a nice old Eastern European bass. You'll have to spend some time repeatedly scouring ebay/gumtree/bassschat to catch then when they come up but you can pick up a pretty solid bass that's been around for 20+ years and is still in one piece so you know it's decent quality. Both my basses are Eastern European (one East German, the other Hungarian) and both cost me less that £600. £200 spent on a set up and bingo - you've got a very useable bass for <£1000. If you're not prepared to wait, then I'd recommend one of the Thomann 2 double basses. They're built in the Hora factory in Romania and are very good for the money. Another option is the Stentor Student 2 bass. Oue Guitarist has one and it's also very good. https://www.thomann.de/gb/thomann_kontrabass_22_02.htm https://www.stentor-music.com/brands/stentor/stentor-student-ii-double-bass-outfit-58/ I've played both of these and would more than happy to have either as a regular gigging bass.
5. Tell me about the Zyex - Med? Light? Evahs orchestral - are they Evah Pirazzi light? I'm looking for new strings for my EUB for the festy season and really want a set of Evah Pirazzi weich. There was an Eminence at the double bass bash with Evahs on that sounded great - I want that....
6.
My first band in school folded. And then started again in a month with a different name and a different bassist. Luckily I am so thick skinned that I was over it within a day. This songs is for all of us. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yr_s6-Q7f00 Well I thought about the army, Dad said, son you're f***in high. And I thought, yeah there's a first for everything, So I took my old man's advice. Three sad semesters, It was only fifteen grand. Spent in bed I thought about the army, I dropped out and joined a band instead. Grew a mustache and a mullet, Got a job at chic-fil-a. Citing artistic differences the band broke up in May, And in June reformed without me, and they got a different name. I nuked another grandma's apple pie And hung my head in shame.
Excellent. If nothing else, this reminds me that I need more Ben Folds Five in my life.
7. Had to Google him. Shiny....
8. The original incarnation of my band were unashamed Dorset sectarians and were called 'Who's Afear'd', which is the moto of the county of Dorset. The current incarnation has carried on the Dorset theme but with added rough cider to become The Skimmity Hitchers. The name is taken from a scene in 'The Mayor of Casterbirdge' by Thomas Hardy, where he describes the public ridicule (a 'Skimmington' in the Dorset dialect) of two married people who are having an affair. Effigies of the couple are tied to the back of a cart and paraded thorough the village accompanied by 'rough music'. A similar practice was used in Dorset to shame drunkards - they would be piled into a cart and paraded through the village to be ridiculed by the villagers. The cart was called the Skimington or Skimmity Waggon and the drunks on the Skimmity Waggon were called Skimmity Hitchers. Essentially we're Dorset drunks playing 'rough' music.... 9. There's a Bassix EUB in the for sale forum - they don't come much more compact than that. Can't vouch for the sound but I'm pretty sure the Bassix instruments have an acoustic chamber to make them more double bassy than yer typical solid stick EUB.
10.
Dark Star
1000x yes! One of the few bands that completely blew me away the first time (and every time) I saw them.
11. I'm coming round to this way of thinking. The desire to blend two pickups is for my own vanity, not because anyone in the band or the audience had said my bass sound is poor - quite the opposite in fact. Ultimately, I think I'd spend too much time fiddling with separate preamps or blend controls, trying to get some 'perfect' live sound that only exists in my head instead of sticking with the perfectly fine and useable sound that I already have and concentrating on playing and doing a good gig, which is what it's all about.
12.
Glad to report I'm relatively GAS free...except for those BF 1x10's 🤓
Humph. I now want a 51 style P- bass like yours and Jabba's piezo fretless.
13. It was all so terribly....civilised! Thanks to everyone involved in arranging the day and making everything run smoothly. Dave
14. You oughta know by Alanis Morrisette It's about 90% F#. Shows what you can do with well chosen spaces.
15.
I'm still thinking my point is not being grasped. Do other people, on finding out from one's other half that you are a practicing muso, seem to think, for whatever reason, that she should attend every gig? Is that not completely weird?
People ask if she goes to our gigs, but I've never heard Mrs Rev say that someone was surprised that she didn't go to every gig/expect her to go to every gig. So yes. It's weird.
16.
Sue comes to every one and has done for 17 years. She helps set up and tear down, does the lights and tells me if I am too loud or quiet. The only problem is I really don't know if she likes the music! She says she does but I don't really believe her. Oh, and she drives if there are free drinks all night.
Does she have a sister?
17. 'Spose it all depends on how you define 'Indie' The Smiths were arguably the quintessential indie band and while Morrisey would certainly qualify as dreary, no-one could describe Andy Rourke's playing as dull or unimaginative. Snow Patrol on the other hand, have not yet produced a song with a bass part that made me prick my ears up.
18. That's brightened up my Monday morning.
19.
Actually Dave, it was on my 'umble ply where I first noticed this.
Ah, then it's true that it's all in the fingers. 😉 I dont generally play (and never gig) with the Snark on the bridge, but more because it buzzes like crazy than any noticeable muting effect.
20.
Seems obvious, but don't leave a clip-on on the bridge while playing. It has a dampening effect.
Maybe on your bass mate - on my East German plywood, it just makes not one iota of difference to the shininess of the turd.
21. I have a Snark clip on bass tuner and a Korg Pitchblack pedal tuner. Both work fine with open strings. The Snark prefers to be clipped to the bridge, rather than the scroll.
22.
I'm amazed that a DB can go into a Micra. Thanks for the info.
Micra? Pah!! https://youtu.be/NWvI3QVjlv8 No matter how many times I watch this, I still can't believe it's real.
23. I've transported mine in a Nissan Micra so you'll be fine. I put some padding under the upper bout to make sure that the scroll was elevated and not taking any of the weight of the bass. It's also a good idea to pack some items either side of the bass so that it doesn't roll onto its back when you go round a corner.
24.
