Why not just buy the same setup that your engineer has? At least you know it works for your band.

Prepare the wicker man.......he's not even plugged in! Like the balalaika though, I might have to get one.

Tecamp do a rather tasty looking 2x12 combo which incorporates their excellent Puma 500w amp head. http://www.tecamp.de/en/products/combos/58-puma-combo-212.html#features

NDBD The Strunal has landed **feelgood update**
TheRev replied to SubsonicSimpleton's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Oh man, I feel for you - that's the definition of fustration....you can look but you can't touch! -
Yes, its funny - I can use the Midget very happily for bass guitar, but I just can't tame it enough for acoustic or EUB. Probably as much to do with amp and pickup options as it is the Midget's voicing. Would love to try one of the new ones and see how that works.
It was this very issue with the possibility of overly aggressive mids that convinced me to buy the MAS45 instead of a Midget.
I'm wondering about the new Barefaced retro 2X10. Might be too coloured for db, but interesting. Heavier than my Midget though. And so as not to stray too far OT, I can't fault my EA Doubler. Clean and light.
Agreed, the Doubler is an amazing little amp. A bit of cab colouring isn't necessarily a bad thing. I'm not a 'my bass only louder' player and I like a pretty old school, bassy sound, so if a cab gives me that (and I can hear the notes I'm playing) then I'm a happy camper.

These are excellent value for money: http://www.thomann.de/gb/thomann_kontrabass_2_wr_34.htm If you have a bit more cash, go for the tineo wood (TN) version for a bit more resonance. If you don't want to buy unseen, then you could do a lot worse than paying a visit to Thwaites in Watford and see what they have in your price range.
Any strong feelings about why 1X8 should be better than 1X12? I've heard people mention speed of response etc, but can you hear the difference? I use a Barefaced 1X12, superlight and mega loud, with plenty bottom, but wondering whether I'm missing anything that an 8 could give.
I can certainly hear the difference between my 1x10 and my 4x5 cabs - the smaller speakers react quicker so notes retain separation and can be heard much more clearly. With my 1x10, anything involving 8th notes on the E string would be sonic mush - not so with the 5" drivers. If you're happy with your 1x12, then there's no need to change, but I believe that the general consensus is that lots of small drivers are better than one big driver (of equivalent surface area) for responding to the big fundamental you can get with double bass. At least, that's how I understand it - I expect that someone who actually knows something about bass cabs will be along to correct me...

I had an Acoustic Image Ten2 combo - loved the amp, hated the cab so I sold it on in a part exchange for an Euphonic Audio Doubler. I use the Doubler at home and at small 'session' type gigs where I either use an AI Coda cab (if I'm feeling lazy, cos it's light) or my BigE MAS45 (If I want more oomph). The Doubler/AI combination is definitely a 'my bass only louder' setup, but I'm always trying to get more bottom end out of the AI cab in a live setting - I really don't like AI cabs at all for live work. If you're determined to get rid of your Genz stuff, then I'd suggest getting either an AI or EA head and trying them through your 12" cab(s). If that still doesn't float our boat, then you could try either the Crazy 8, Crazy 88 (2x8") or a BigE MAS45. I have a BigE MAS45 and I f*#@ing love this cab. It was designed by the same chap who designed (or was involved in the design of) the Crazy 8 and Crazy 88 cabs and are designed specifically for double bass. They are 'voiced' to an extent and the BigE cabs are definitely designed to be pushed hard, so they may not be as transparent as Acoustic Image cabs but if you're worried about losing bottom end, I wouldn't recommend an Acoustic Image cab (IMO/IME etc.). Another option, if you're feeling particularly flush, would be the AER Bass Cube. Danny Thompson uses one and I've never heard a bad thing about them. I'd buy one in a flash if I lost compete control of my financial common sense.

How does a rev solo or bass max compare with a realist
TheRev replied to spencer.b's topic in EUB and Double Bass
I have a Bassmax and a Realist The Realist sounds the most natural & transparent, but I can't use it at high volumes. It's great in a little trio type set up though, where you're just using a little bit of monitoring and a small PA The Bassmax is very reliable, quite bass heavy (which I like) and very feedback resistant. I went through a bunch of pickups before I tried the Bassmax - it was the only one that really worked for me on bigger stages - everything else seems to either squeal uncontrollably or lacked enough bottom end to carry across the stage. I use a Bassmax on my rockabilly/bluegrass working bass and a Realist on my jazz/folk acoustic sessions bass (and also for recording). -
You could try bar/restaurant type places like pizza express? These guys: http://www.thelivingroom.co.uk/ Hired a load of jazzy & acoustic acts when they opened in Bristol. There's a branch in Glasgow, so it could be worth paying them a visit. Or this could be ideally suited to your needs: http://www.swingltd.co.uk/ You may have problems getting anything without your own PA though

Bye Jack. You were an amazing musician, a top bloke and an enormous influence on my playing style. Cheers mate.

Honest answer? It doesn't matter. Whatever strings you put on there, you'll end up changing them within six months and every six months thereafter when you embark on the inevitable quest for 'the' string. But if you wan't somewhere to start, Spiro weichs are as good a place as any, or Innovation Super Silvers/Velvet Blues if you want to get old school. Good luck and bon voyage....

PA sub woofer advice needed (Yamaha DXS12 or DXS15?)
TheRev replied to TheRev's topic in General Discussion
Cheers for the advice guys - sounds like the 15s are the way to go. Not too worried about the weight, the guitarist will be doing most of the lifting. :-D -
We use kazoo a lot - sometimes there's even a kazoo three-way. We did have a set of those metal ones that come in a cardboard tube, but either the seams have split or the ring that holds the paper has broken off. You're much better off with a £1.50 Stagg jobbie - they last longer, sound the same and you can buy a sweetie jar full for about £10 and hand them out at gigs for a bit of crowd participation.

My band are upgrading our PA system to something more suited to the bigger venues we're playing, so our trusty pub rig is up for sale. 2x Peavey Messenger Pro 15 passive full range speakers: http://www.thomann.d...mk_ii_8_ohm.htm And a Behringer PMP6000 powered mixing desk http://www.thomann.d...er_pmp_6000.htm The PMP6000 puts out 800w per side at 4Ohms. We used it with the 8Ohm Peavey messenger 15s and it was plenty for yer typical pub gig. We've owned this rig for just under 2 years and everything is in used but good condition - no missing knobs/sliders and no rips in the cab carpeting. The desk has been recently serviced by a Behringer service centre and comes in a full flightcase (worth £130) We'll also throw in a pair of 10M Speakon cables. This rig is currently in storage in Ilminster, near Yeovil - I can sort out some actual pictures of the cabs and desk once our road manager-type bloke comes back from Holland at the end of the month. Churrz! Dave

PA sub woofer advice needed (Yamaha DXS12 or DXS15?)
TheRev replied to TheRev's topic in General Discussion
Thanks for that JTUK -really helpful! The weight isn't huge issue (they'll be humped around in the guitarist's van) - I just don't want to have to lump two bloody great boxes around if we don't need to. Our usage will be exactly as you describe - 200-300 capacity rooms and small outdoor festivals. We ran just the DXR12s at a small stage (say 200 people) at a festival this year and they just about coped with everything except the dub-ska band, so I'm fairly sure that adding the DXS 12s would do everythng we needed. Cheers! Dave -
Hi All. My band have been upgrading our PA from our trusty but tired Peavey/Behringer PA system to something more suited to larger venues and cider festivals. We've bought a pair of Yamaha DXR 12s as PA tops and have been runnng these on their own for a couple of months. We're very happy with these speakers, but we are pushing them at some of our bigger gigs, so we've decided to add a pair of the matching Yamaha DXS subs to the system. The DXS subs come in two flavours - 12" and 15". Both have 950W power amps, the 15 goes down to 45Hz compared to the 12's 47Hz and the 15 pushes 132dB compared to the 12's 131dB. So, my question is: how much of a difference is there likely to be between the 12 and the 15 in real terms? We will be putting drums and double bass through the PA (hence the addition of subs). I appreciate that the 15 will put out more bass when running at full tilt compared to the 12, but we're not playing dub step or anything, so will the extra performance of the 15 be worth the extra cost and weight? Churrz! Dave

Anyone going to Sorefingers bluegrass weekend 24-26 Oct?
TheRev replied to Clarky's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Not me, but a couple of Canadians that came to our gig on Saturday are going - they were very excited about it all. -
It was Ian Hunter... Probably the first time he crossed my radar. Okay... Pentangle Bert Jansch Steve Simpson Magna Carta Paul Brennan
Danny Thompson?

The XLR on the Markbass amp is designed for a microphone rather than a pickup. I've tried running the XLR output from my Fishman preamp into the XLR input on my LMII and the signal was too low to be of much use. You'll get much better results with your pickup going into the main input of your amp.

I think its just a visual effect produced by the video frame rate - a bit like the way car wheels seem to go in reverse on film.
