1. A case would be fine in the hold. Might have to pay for the access baggage weight though? I was talking to an American bassist who was on tour in the UK & Europe- he said that he bought a gear4music type case at the start of each tour as you void pick them up cheap on eBay. They were sturdy enough to last for a couple of weeks on the road and he threw them away when he got home.
2. Get one of those gear4music polystyrene cases and have it couriered over?
3. Fantastic! It's great to see a band enjoying themselves on stage - the audience will always follow.
4. Both full sets now sold subject to the usual. The part (E A &D) set is still available. Dave
5. I've got one brand spanking new and one played in set of Spiro mittels for sale or trade. The new set are still in their little envelopes but not in the big box: £70 inc postage The used set came with my new bass and are nicely played in (i.e. they don't sound like a set of springs from a Fender Twin Reverb....). Plenty of life left in these: £40 inc postage. I also have used part set (E, A & D) - possibly of use to someone looking for an E&A to go with their gut D & G? These are used, but as I haven't actually tried them (they came with the bass when I bought them) I don't know if they're at the nicely played in stage or not: £20 or make me an offer. I'm open to trades on any of the above. I'm particularly interested in Evah Pirazzi, Zyex, Obligatos, Innovation Honeys, Braided, Rockabillys or Ultra Blacks or Corellis. I have a preference for synthetic/nylon strings over steels, but I'll consider pretty much anything. Cheers Dave
6. So far, so good Geoff! Every day is different but we're getting into the swing of things and working around her feeding times - at the moment it's change-feed-sleep on a 2 - 4 hour cycle. I've actually found that the 2 hour ish gaps between feeds is just the right amount of time to get some bass practice in....
7. Got 2 gigs on the weekend of the 23rd but I'm up for this one as long as Mrs doesn't object.
8. In: Michael Poller double bass BigE MAS45 cab Euphonic Audio Doubler Italia Rimini bass Out: BFM Omni 10.5 Acoustic Image Ten2 combo That's quite a busy year for me.
9. Thanks for all the tips everyone! Mum and little Evie now back from hospital and getting ready for our first family Christmas.
Huh, I thought you'd got a new bass! Congrats anyway :-)
I know - sorry to pull your chain. I did actually buy a new bass last month in preparation for never having any money for basses ever again
It's criminal the degree to which women overlook the pain a father endures in childbirth Congrats mate, a new baby, the only thing in the world better than a new DB C
I tell you mate -labour was awful, at one point my fingers were so crushed that I thought I'd never play bass again. And did anyone care? Did they arse....
Rev, I seem to remember from previous post that Danny Thompson is you favourite bass player. Check out his album "Connected". Of course there is some great playing on it, but more to the point, my wife and I played it at bedtime for our baby daughter over her first few weeks and she slept brilliantly with it: we edited out a couple of more uptempo numbers, the rest is really relaxing and much better than all the plinky plonky lullabies CDs. I am so excited for you both! Babies are brilliant!!
Cheers Rabbie, I'll check that out. Despite loving Danny's playing, I don't have any of his solo albums. I'm aslo very into my post-rock and I've already got decent playlist of the mellower Sigur Ros, Explosions in the sky and Mogwai tracks. In addition to getting her to sleep it will also be a good education in music, unlike Mrs Rev's Madonna and Micheal Buble albums.
10. New baby day! Tiny Rev (or Evelyn, as Mrs Rev insists we call her) was born this afternoon. Mum and baby fine, Dad very tired from lack of sleep and with serious cramp in his left arm from holding baby all evening. Thanks for all the good wishes over the last few weeks! Cheers all, Dave.
11.
Thanks Dave, hope you don't mind me linking to your pics….
No problem, fill yer boots mate.
12. Ah, quality bit of kit that ;-) I really liked the amp on this - amazing for double bass.
13.
Congratulations, have you bought him a bass yet? It IS a boy, isn't it?
We don't know which it is. Doesn't really matter, basses will be bought regardless....
14. I'm not gigging this weekend due to the iminent arrival of baby Rev, so we had ^this gig^ last weekend....... To be fair, Skimmity Hitchers gigs are usually pretty raucous affairs, but this was a 'homecoming' gig in Dorchester, matched with a fan's 50th birthday and a load of locals out on the lash, hittting our venue and finding the interesting collection of strong scrumpy ciders on offer. So, three occasions of the packed crowd falling over the monitors and onto the stage and two totally out of it pi**heads falling into everyone and causing a fight, resulting in a trashed Christmas tree, some freaked out fans and the police being called to deal with the aforementioned pi**heads. Was still a good gig though.
15. Is anyone looking to move on a set of Spiro weichs? I can do a trade deal with a new set of Mittels, a played in set of Mittels, a slightly used set of superflexibles or a mixed set of helicore hybrids (E-D)/orchestral (G). Or can pay cash. Cheers Dave
16.
+1! BTW hows Trev coming on?!
Trev's a week overdue now, so we're just sitting at home, twiddling our thumbs and hoping he'll put in an appearance before Christmas. On the plus side, I'm getting in plenty of bass practice.
17. Happy christmas everyone. Thanks for providing a forum where no-one feels the need to argue all the time.
18. I use an Acoustic Image Contra cab at home. A down firing 1x10 and a forward firing 5" driver. It sits very neatly under an EA Doubler amp.
19. The pole thing is for the MAS45-110 combo, the 45 is perfectly audible on its own. Elevating a bit does help on big stages though. It's really worth reading the technical blurb on the BigE website: http://bigeloudspeakers.com/faqs.htm I've no idea what any of it means. The cab still sounds good, whatever the reason. It's also very light. That's important.
20. If anyone fancies a change of scenery, they could pop over to the BigE thread on Talkbass. It's pretty much the same fight, only the names have changed. http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f15/big-e-speakers-pt-3-a-1020840/ For the record I use a BigE MAS45. It's the best cab ever made and I'll punch anyone who says otherwise. ;)
21.
The will change the running order mid set but neglect to tell me what we are playing next, odd really but a shame as the band can be good.
Aw man, this is all sounding far too familiar. Do they also change the key at the last minute and not bother to tell you?
22. I use a Korg Pitchblack pedal tuner for onstage tuning checks, but the snark works well backstage or at soundcheck just before the guitar plugs in....
23. If you've tried talking to them about the volume and they're still turning up, it seems to me that they're more interested in what they sound like rather than what the band sounds like. Personally, I'd walk and find some actual musicians to play with. There's plenty of bands out there looking for double bassists and it doesn't sound like you're enjoying yourself much. If you want to try one last shot, I'd tell them that you're going to leave because they're so loud that you can't compete on volume, so you may as well not be there as your musical contribution is neither audiable or, it would seem, required.
24. I've got a Snark bass model. Probably the best clip on tuner available. It's permanently attached to the bass leg of my bridge.
