1. I fancy a bang on the Zyex jobbies. PM sent...
2. Someone once said 'It takes a great drummer to be better than no drummer' No idea who it was- I think it's someone's signature either here or on Talkbass. Anyway, if you really don't like him and really can't play with him, then one of you has to go before it gets violent. It's the only way I'm afraid I walked out on a band five minutes after we finished our first gig as a trio. The Drummer was a really nice guy but just couldn't play and actual rhythm. The guitarist and I had been together for a year or so but he was starting ot get on my t*ts as his timing was rubbish, he never listened to anyone else and because he always sang uber-loud (people often said he sounded like Eddie Vedder so he started to believe the hype.....) he would regularly wreck his voice and we would have to cancel gigs. All of this added up to a complete waste of my time and a sonic embarrassment, so I ran away.
3. The Genz Benz 3.0 10T is a belter of a combo for double bass, but I believe they're discontinued now so you might have to move fast to find one. If Markbass and Genz Benz are out of your budget range it's worth keeping an eye on the for sale forum - there are bargains to be had if you're patient enough to wait for them. The Ibanez Promethean combos might be suitable for DB - 200W with a 1x10 is a good setup. Also worth considering is the TC Electronic 2x10 combo. I had one provided as backline at a festival once and was pleasantly suprised.
4. I'v only got 2 real basses plus one electric and an acoustic bass guitar. I feel inadequate.
5. In theory yes but in practice maybe not. A solid wood top would resonate more and therefore be louder than a laminate top as the laminate will be much stiffer than solid wood. However, a well made laminate could resonate more than a poorly made, cheap solid top. The only way to find out which is louder would be to play the basses in question. You should also be aware of the difference between a pressed solid top and a carved solid top. A pressed top has a curve formed by a steam press and if done on the cheap, may eventually want to return to being a flat piece of wood.
6. I'm always happy to have a bang on some Innovation strings, but I'm not much of an arco player I'm afraid. Still, if you want to know if your shiny new strings work for Johhny Cash-esque, root-fifth thumpery in a cider infused atmosphere, then I'm yer man.
7.
this gig is(?) in Bath , 61 miles from Poole, see you there!
I think I know where you mean..... waste of your time and effort. If you want to play in Bath there are a handful of pubs that will put you on a Friday night, no door charge and you'll get paid £130 or thereabouts.
8. There just ain't no love for Velvets in the Clarky household is there?
9. I used an 'X' type keyboard stand for a while in my endeavours to conquer double bass feedback. The feedback was reduced but the sound was seriously lacking in those low mid and bass frequencies that made up the woody DB sound - sort of twangy and nasal. Bleugh. I really didn't like it, so I set about learning how to properly EQ my sound and use the high pass filter (HPF) on my peramp. I've also bought a GRAMMA pad for those hollow/wooden floors so I can still get acoustic coupling without the boominess that a hollow stage gives. It's still not 100% great sound every gig, but I rarely have a problem with feedback these days
10. Steadyfoot: http://www.gelbass.com/bass/Eminence_parts.html I can measure the diameter of mine if you want to know if it will fit your endpin hole?
11. Surely something like a Sandberg JM or PM would cover the Stingray and classic Fender tones?
12. Due the 'stick' design of the vast majority of EUBs, they will all tend to spin away from you when you play them. One exception is the Eminence which has a 'T' bar design endpin (they call it the 'steadifoot' or something), which stops the bass from rotating. You can buy the steadifoot as a spare part, but it might not fit your endpin hole. The problems with the cheaper EUBs is the inability to adjust the hip brace/body bar/whatever to suit your height and playing position, but very few EUBs actually have that feature - the Landscape basses are the only ones I know of. Having said that, I have found that the more expensive EUBs have better ergonomic design and are much more comfortable to play. The Yamaha Silent bass and the Bassix New Tech are two that I've played which seemed pretty stable when playing. The best EUB for sound and holding? I'd say the Eminence - but then I would because I own one! The Yamaha is pretty comfy to play and Chris Minh Doky gets a great sound out of his. The Bespoke Superlight sounds pretty good, though I've never played one and the Bassix is nice to play but I've never heard it plugged in. Te problem with comparing decent EUBs is that they're so rare It's difficult to impossible to be in a position to try more than one or two.
13. Low tension synthetic strings are used by the vast majority of rockabilly players - you just can get the snap and bounce needed from steel strings. Strings to look for are: Innovation: Silverslaps or Psycho slaps. Daf Lewis (in the Innovation strings forum) will have all the information you'll ever need about these strings. Superior Bassworks Dirty Guts (or any of their 'Gut' strings - they're all the same strings, just different colours) Cordes Lamberts: The slap string of choice, but expensive and very difficult to get hold of. As a beginner, I'd suggest the Superior Bassworks strings as they're very cheap (£40ish) and come in sets of six so you can try bunpung different gauges.
14.
Front room facing the wall with the chimney so the sound bounces back. Any other direction in the room and the sound seems to really disappear. Also, because it's mid-terrace, 8-8:30pm is when I stop.
Same here. Except I don't stop at 8:30.
15. Guitarist in a blues band I used to be in has a Peerless Gretch copy. It was a really nice guitar for not very much money. *edit* Just looked up the price of ths - £599!! Think I'll jusy buy a Jack Cassady
16. Solid Air by John Martyn and Last Goodbye by Jeff Buckley. Never managed to find a guitarist with the balls to try either...
17.
Not convinced by this one. It has been messed about a fair bit (pickups & wiring, brass nut, missing trc),
Wasn't the brass nut standard on the top end BC basses? I'm pretty sure the Pudak/Maple capped ones I drooled over in the Bass Centre had brass nuts. *cue monkey joke*
18.
Oooh, intriguing! As you are well stocked with amps I guess its (double) bass shaped?
Actually, it's cab shaped.... I need something that will serve me on larger stages so I've gone for something from the bloke who built your Crazy8.
19. Clarky, ordinarily, I'd be first in the queue to buy this off you, but I've just put a deposit on something a bit special.
20. The Genz Benz shuttle 3.0 10T would be a tidy little combo amp for DB. If your budget won't stretch that far, the Ibanez Promethean combo could be a good choice. The boom you're hearing probably isn't feedback but just the low frequencies produced by your bass. A dedicated double bass preamp with a high pass filter (HPF) will improve the sound no end.
21.
Link here to two tracks from our fothcoming ep https://soundcloud.c...ngstusarewolves
Ohh, that's nice - I particularly like 'And so you thought "the sky's the limit"'. There's not enough use of the xylophone in rock music in my opinion.
22.
And no one yet mentioned Rothko, who have 2 bass players:
They had three bass players, Mark Beazley, Crawford Blair, and Jon Meade.
