1. I really, really like this. Although the headstock could do with cutting down on the bacon butties.
2. Jim plays the blue jazz (Squier), the black Jazz (American standard, I think) and a baritone guitar (looks like an Italia or Danelectro) live.
3. Yep- Bristol/Bath based band, been around for about four years, formed by bassist Jim Barr and drummer Clive Deamer while their regular band (Portishead) wasn't doing any gigs. I went to their album launch gig in Bristol last Thursday. Cracking gig that could only have been improved by having Clive Deamer on drums instead of a dep. Not that the dep did a bad job, far from it, he just wasn't Clive Deamer.
4. Apologies - duplicate thread Keith's proper feedback thread is here: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/12290-feedback-for-yorks5stringer/page__pid__1596084__st__20#entry1596084
5. Two years? F#*k. We are a totally useless bunch. I'm in. As long as it's on a Sunday I can make a few enquiries about hiring a room here at the university. Might be a bit pricey though.
6. Good luck for tonight!
edit: must remember to hold the beer belly in a little too, although of course i'm only fat in photographs
I just rest mine on the upper bout of my bass - works a treat.
7. Start slow and simple and build up the technique from there. I'm not a full on slapper by any means, but I like to throw a couple in when I can. A useful exercise to get started is to play a slow tempo 12 bar blues pattern with a slap between each note on the up beat. Once you're comfy with that, try putting in a double slap at the start of the bar. Once you've got that, move on to triplets....
8. My last quote was £250 for a bridge and fitting. It can take a bit of time to get the profile of the bridge feet to match the contours of the table so perhaps your qoutes are based on a worst case scenario and may end up costing a lot less if the fitting turns out to be straightforward.
9. My Eminence has a Eb stop and my DB has a D stop - I've not had any major problem switching between them, the Eminence has position markers, which probably helps a lot. Having said that, if I had the choice I'd rather that both basses had a D stop, just for convenience. I have no idea if the speaking lengths are the same or not - I've not measured them and I certainly haven't noticed any significant difference.
10. Both instruments are equal in terms of playibility and sound quality. Getting an acoustic bass sound will depend on the strings you use and your playing technique. The biggest difference between the two is that the NXT4 is mounted on a stand wheras the Aria has a hip brace and is played held against the body.
11. Heh! Jayne has been around the block a few times, I reckon she can handle the Chelsea. I used my Eminence at our last gig there and it made it out unscathed. Unlike our drummer, but that's a story for another day.
12. Raw scrumpy'n'western at the Chelsea Inn in Easton, Bristol. If you haven't been before, the Chelsea is a bit like the cantina in Moss Isley but with the cast from Mad Max 2.
13.
There was a pretty lengthy interview in a guitarist magazine from the 90s I have somewhere that was pretty interesting. Will turn up eventually and I can send it to you digitally or something.
Ohh, thank you very much!
14. I would like to read about Danny Thompson. Having heard him talk about his life a couple of times, he has a very philosophical approach to his playing and a load of interesting stories, admittedly mainly about John Martyn! So my vote goes to Danny, even though he wasn't on your list....
15. I've got 2 gigs on the 7th, so no from me. I'm happy enough to do something in the south east though, Mrs Rev's mum lives in Hampshire,so I can drop her off on the way.
16.
this is possible to buy but only by mail "][email protected] , he serious!
There's a bit of a waiting list for the Gut Twins..... They do sound fecking amazing though.
17.
A lively debate as ever, thanks for responses folks. Think my plan of action now is to wait for new adjustable bridge from gollihurs to finally arrive, get the action sorted and charge the band for a new set of silver slaps, or maybe super silvers, or the rockabilly ones, or maybe some weed wackers off ebay, or my corelli solo tuned down to regular, oh dear I've gone cross eyed..... If anyone has any secondhand sets lying around I would be more than happy to purchase. As bilbo said, its all about experimenting and I want to try as many as I can before committing big bucks.
I'd avoid weedwhackers if I were you. The E string has almost no pizz sound whatsoever. My recommendation would be Innovation Super silvers or Honeys or a set of Velvet Blues. I love the Velvets on my bass at the moment - enough thump for the country stuff, enough growl for the jazz stuff and loose enough to be able to throw in a few slaps here and there. I started a string trading thread a few months ago, so it's worth digging that up if you want to try different strings.
18. I don't give a monkey's arse whether I'm a big girly wuss or not. Low tension strings work well on my bass and work well for me and my playing style, so that's all that matters really. Why make life more difficult for yourself?
19. Has anyone got experience of claiming on the Musicians Union instrument insurance?
20. The last time I was in Footes (about 3 years ago I think) they had 10 or 15 double basses in the basement.
21. TPJ, I recommend a set of Velvet Blues to replace your Animas. Same feel as Animas, but much cheaper.
22. Frankly, it's a bit much to expect a decent set of low tension double bass strings for under £50. A large percentage of your sound is in the string you use, so skimping on strings is ultimatley detrimental. But, between £75-£120 there is a lot of choice. Super silvers, as previously mentioned, Silver Slaps, Velvet Blues and Kolstein Heritage to name just a few. Yes, DB strings are expensive compared to electric bass strings, but you only change them once every couple of years, so the cost over time is pretty much the same.
23.
Hey that is an original 1972 Union Jack slim fit (as you can tell from my gut) cost me a bloody fortune.......
Maybe they had tougher eyes in 1972?
24.
Whats scruffy Jazz? Got any pictures?
1) Buy a suit from your local charity shop. Preferably black and preferably a size too large. 2) Play lots of gigs in the suit 3) Sleep in the suit - ideally in the back of the van 4) hey presto! You have achieved 'scruffy jazz' Essentially, you want to look like those sharp suited late 40s jaz cats, but can't afford a decent suit.
