Hi Biggsy I've got a Hartke 115XL sitting around doing nothing. Obviously it's not as light as a 115TP but many people believe the XLs sound better than the TPs.... I bought it new about 2 years ago and for the last year it hasn't left the house so it's in very good condition. It sounded great paired with a 210, so it'll sound amazing with a 410 I reckon. Interested?
Don't know who said it about bass "Never play anything above the 5th fret"
I think that was Aston 'family man' Barrett of the Wailers. 'It doesn't matter if it sounds particularly good on its own, as long as it sounds like a bass' - Poni Pallidino

Go for it. I put Roto flats on mine for my folk-rock band and it sounded perfect - removes the top end harmonics but keeps the fundamentals nice and clear. It was great for playing old soul stuff too.

Danny Thompson, although I've been listening to him for years without knowing it as he's the first chioce double bass session dude judging by the number of albums he's played on.
Wouldn't touch them with a barge pole. That single pick up guitar is made of Korina (of flying V fame) which is quite good, and that's the cheapest one. The rest, the more expencive ones? AGATHIS!
Apparently this one Mondial is mahogany with a maple top. Tasty.

I'm very much liking the look of these at the moment. Italia Particularly the Mondial and the Ampeg copy... I must be having a bout of retro GAS. Has anyone tried/got one?

Sterling. They each feel a bit different and have slightly different tonal qualities so you should try all three and find the one that suits you best. Failing that, just buy a Sterling

Hi Mike. On the back of the SWB there's a threaded hole which is the right size for a camera tripod. I picked up a cheap one which is sturdy enough to stop it toppling over. Having said that, I've done plenty if gigs where I've forgotten the stand and just wedged it into a corner out the way and not had any disasters so far.

The Squier Vintage Modified Jazz basses are getting a lot of mentions at the moment and they're a lot less than your £400.
I suppose I was hoping for more bass less beer, but hey; there's room for both !! (Maybe I should have started a proper thread and not hijacked this poor guy's intro)
Yeah - sorry about that. A proper South West bass bash would be great if 'someone' can find a bass friendly venue and we have enough confirmed attendees to pay for the bugger. Any ideas?
If you think you are brilliant, buy a fretless...see..that'll teach you you cocky little bugger.
Class!! There's nothing like a fretless bass, dark stage and a crap foldback mix to help you fill you trousers.
Buy an Upright
++1 - which will go a very long way to avoiding the point above. There's some gems coming up here. Good work guys!
Talking of which what happened to the idea of a Bristol/Bath/Somerset meet?
It never got past the idea stage - nobody seemed willing to organise anything. If we're just talking about meeting for a beer then it shouldn't be too difficult. Anyone in Brizzle fancy a bass related pint?

1) The spaces you leave are just as important as the note you play. 2) Never, ever leave a drummer alone with the rider.

He was only about 17 or 18 at that time. Makes yer sick......
Hi Rev Thanks matey, like you said, more space less notes, I find myself mostly playing roots or 5th above or under, and the impact comes from the feel of the note and when it's played. What EUB are you playing?
It's an Aria SWB Lite. I don't think it sounds terribly close to a proper DB but with a DB playing technique (or as close as I can get!!) it's definitley passable. Plus it fits in my car! TBH, when I bought it I was actually looking for a new fretless but it popped up on the for sale forum on Bassworld and I thought 'what the hell'.

Nice one Sub! I've only been playing upright for about 8 months but I've found you can do a lot with one note, a slide and a bit of vibrato! I wouldn't worry about your stickers. my EUB has dots at the harmonic points and I'm happy to admit I'd be lost without them. Anyway, no-one else can see them but me....

Ah, I wondered what those knobs on my amp were for. THANK YOU EXPERT VILLAGE!!!
Well after an interesting visit to my LGS today during my lunch break, he's given me a really good price on the Aria SWB so Im going for that!!
Good choice sir. I've only had mine for about six months and I'm loving every minute of it. It's a bit like learning to play all over again but already knowing what you're supposed to be doing. I'm also playing more gigs and sessions than you can shake a stick at - there's something about upright bass that makes people take notice. Sweet.

The Stagg looks like a copy (licenced??) of the Aria SWB Lite - probably made in China which is why it's so stupidly cheap. I've got an Aria Swb Lite and I'm pretty happy with it. Although I can see myself wanting to upgrade in a few years time. I've no idea what the quality of Stagg stuff is - it seems good quality for the price but without trying it first there's really no way of knowing. Generally you get what you pay for so if you've got £700 to spend on an EUB, then that's what I'd do. Spending £300 may be a false economy.
