1. Just to tidy this loose end, I went with a slightly used set of Spirocore Lights. They're great, just what I wanted. Only snag is that I now want a set for my NS Design EUB.

2. You don't see many of these. In fact you almost certainly won't see another...

This is a reluctant sale 'cause it's a unique and fabulous instrument, but a long hard look at what I've got and what I need means this one should probably go (and I'll almost certainly regret it).

Anyway, it's a Yamaha BEX 4 with a fretless conversion by ex-Brighton luthier Paul Aguilera (http://www.bbc.co.uk...laguilera.shtml). Paul didn't just pull the frets out, he replaced the fingerboard with a lovely piece of dense ebony (no problem with round wounds). The neck got a new truss rod at the same time and there's white side dots at "fret" positions (3, 5, 7, 9, 12, etc.). The bass plays beautifully and with the currently fitted LaBella White Nylons sounds completely unique. It's well up in the mix on this:

For those that don't know, the BEX 4, it's a semi-acoustic, 34" scale with piezo and mag pickups. One of the best inexpensive basses that Yamaha don't make anymore I reckon. There's a volume and pickup blend control on the front, and there's a side-mounted three-band EQ control. Being Yamaha, the build quality is very good and the bass is in great condition. The only real blemish is some slight marking in the finish on the front.

I've priced it as a ball-park really 'cause I don't honestly know what it's worth. So make me an offer (bearing in mind of course that, as I don't really need to sell, I'd be mad to let it go for peanuts). I'm potentially open to trades and happy to ship to UK or Europe.

Here's a bunch of pictures:

Price drop edit: £375

3. Custom World Guitars don't have anything fretless at the moment as far as I know. I've been after a maple 'board fretless for ages. They told me they're not likely to stock them again. Didn't realise their necks came via Eyeparts (http://www.eyguitarmusic.com). Wonder where they buy from?

4. The problem I've experienced with Squire tuners is not that they don't basically work, it's that the pressed steel lollipop bits are not fixed particularly well in the shaft, so they rattle. I put a set of Wilkinsons on one Squire. New screw holes were needed but the old screw holes were hidden.

5. Zero fret always struck me as a good idea and I've never associated it with 'cheaper' instruments. Ned Steinberger, Joe Veillette and Rob Green are three renowned luthiers to have gone the zero fret route at various times and on various instruments. I'm sure there's more.

Yes, it's mentioned in "The Who at Glastonbury" thread in General Discussion, there's even a close up pic of it.

Serves me right for not looking for a thread there then!

7. I have a set of Innovation Super Silvers on my cheap and cheerful Czech laminate DB at the moment. They're a bit too dull though and they don't do arco particularly well - they're hard to get moving with the bow and even when they are, they sound a bit scratchy.

So, any suggestions for something with a similarly lowish tension and brighter fundamental tone that does arco well? Mustn't break the bank either.

Recording a new album with the band in October and I suspect there's going be quite a bit of DB arco called for, so it would be good to get some strings I'm happy with.

Thanks

8. Anybody else notice Pino playing with The Who using what looked like a P bass with two big chrome Tele bass style humbuckers with then a third plastic cased humbucker right up against the neck? Fascinating Jim...

Not exactly like his Fender signature model.

9. There's these two also..

The Squire Vintage Modified (not HB): http://intl.fender.com/en-GB/basses/jaguar/vintage-modified-jaguar-bass-special-rosewood-fingerboard-3-color-sunburst/
The Modern Player: http://intl.fender.com/en-GB/basses/jaguar/modern-player-jaguar-bass-maple-fingerboard-black/

I have a Vintage Modified HB. It's a perfectly good bass, but beware, it's a one trick pony tone wise.

Strangely, I want to refinish a Jag too. Mine would be Sea Foam Green though. Who would you have do the re-finish?

Haha, you know what I mean ;).....find it easier to get to grips with than a Low B 5 is my point :)

Yeah, I know what you mean. Actually, think I'll order myself a Fodera 5 string so I can just use the B as a thumb-rest :-)

It's funny, I don't really consider it a 5, as the business end is just a low E rather than a low B getting in the way. It's easier to 'ignore' the high C if it's not appropriate for your gig :)

That's a genuine "first world problem" there Si if ever I heard one. Spend £6k on a bass and ignore one of the strings :-)
