Probably going to move the blue bass on in the next six months or so and get a Concorde. Walbassist (Gareth) of these parts has an Archtop fretless five. Phil

Had one of the most comfortable five string necks I've ever played and, as I think I wrote somewhere else, was capable of a decidedly Eberhard Weber EUB kind of tone. Very different from the Veillette and Rob Allen tone which in my experience is much warmer and thumpier (more DB like). Invoice in the post for use of the photo Andy Phil

I went to a classical gig once (although I seem to remember Andy Shepherd was playing so maybe it was a jazz gig) where the pianist, Joanna McGregor, had two nominally identical grand pianos, one tuned to equal temperament and one tuned to an alternative temperament – they sounded utterly different. P
  5. First Bass: An Arbiter Gibson EB copy (followed very rapidly by an Aria medium scale thing). Go to bass: Toss up between a Steinberger CR4 EUB and the blue Veillette Paris. My bass: Wal Custom Fretless. P

  10. All, I acquired this rare and lovely instrument from TheGreek a few weeks ago but the impending arrival of a double bass means I need to move it on. The Precision A/E is a pretty rare beast. They were made in low numbers in Japan in the early 90s and predate by a good few years the currently fashionable semi-sold, acoustic vibe electric basses from the likes of Joe Veillette and Rob Allen. This one is, obviously, a fretless one and other than the odd minor blemish typical of a 20 year old used instrument it's in pretty good nick. I've done a bit of setup work on it and fitted a new set of D'Addario flats (40 – 100), although for some playing tastes it'll need a little more tweaking to get the action really low. The bass sounds really cool and oozes mojo from every pour. It has both a traditional Precision growl from the magnetic pickup and very woody voice from the bridge piezo. Mixing the two can produce all sorts of in-between tones. The neck is typically Precision; chunky but not outrageously so. The body looks to be mahogany with an off-white edge binding and spruce top. The neck is typical Precision; maple with a rosewood fingerboard. Age has yellowed the maple nicely. I'm looking for £650 including a very nice hard case (no trades I'm afraid, unless it's something fretless and outrageously interesting). The bass is in Brighton and I'm happy to ship it.   11. Ahhh, the old Status Electro.. I had a Mk 1 fretless five (now owned by BigBeatNut of these parts I believe) for quite some time. It was (is) a lovely instrument capable of a uniquely Eberhard Weber ish tone. Had a lovely slim neck and bugger all weight. Only thing I didn't like was the red veneer accent line between the body and the top – made it look a bit toy-like somehow. I've not played any of the later Electros, but I miss that Mk 1. Phil

I just like a bass with a low action and to get the A/E the way I want it I think the fingerboard needs attention. It's no more than I'd expect of a 20 year old Precision, although it may well be that the bass always had a slightly lumpy fingerboard - it is after all a mass produced item and not a custom, luthier built masterpiece. Remember too that I've been conditioned by my Wal and by Joe Veillette's extraordinary necks/fingerboards. Phil PS. This clearly falls into the, "well, he would say that wouldn't he" category, but the Veillette acoustic I had for a while (till some lucky bugger bought it) was way beyond any acoustic bass I'd ever played. I used it at a few gigs and I've never seen quite so many muso chins drop at the sight and sound of a bass. I really regret selling it, even though that's what I'm supposed to be doing.   17. All, My lovely fretless Precision A/E, recently acquired from TheGreek, needs its fingerboard shooting (it's got a definite raised area on the treble side above the 12th fret). Can anybody recommend someone in or around Brighton that I should trust with the job? Phil

Andy[/quote] Thanks for posting the pic Andy. I'm always the last to see these things! I'm pretty certain the Concorde is 34". The Minotaur bass on its right is definitely a short scale instrument and the Concorde looks much longer. Lovely looking Martin Keith bass (Martin works with Joe Veillette, hence him sharing a NAMM stand) to the left of the Concorde. Have to say it's very good of Joe to name a bass after an aircraft that the Americans couldn't build PHil

The synth output was fun but I wasn't entirely convinced by the bass itself - sounds ok but playability, fit and finish aren't up to much. Phil
