Some further observations, from my point of view personally. I hope its relevant to the OP topic. I like modding basses, it's like a hobby really. I do this exclusively on budget instruments to get a more pro like feel and tone. But, if we do the maths, a budget instrument upgraded to the max can be the equivalent to a sizeable deposit on a good quality instrument. So, am I kidding myself? I think I am to be honest. The instrument I've seen and want is about £800. It fits my requirements and aesthetics perfectly. More so than trying to shoehorn bits into an instrument thats not really designed for the purpose. £800 is a lot of money for me, but quite modest compared to what you can spend. But, if I was prepared to upgrade my budget bass with potentially £300+ of new hardware, why not use that money and the money from the bass purchase to put it towards a better instrument to begin with? Ultimately, it comes from the player irrespective of the instrument. But, the bass is a tool to get the job done, and good tools will often last longer and help make the job easier as well as more enjoyable. A great thread

Its taken my twenty years to get to this time in my life when I can actually feasible afford to do it. And i agree, gear is only as good as the person using it. I'm thinking of the Maruszyczyk Elwood jbass as my next purchase. So it's a significant investment for me financially, but still very modest in terms of what you can pay for in certain circles. The same arguements can be applied to a car purchase. My car is horrible. But, it does everything it needs to and more. So why bother upgrading? We all know the answer to that one. Because we can.

Reading and partaking in this thread has made me realise a few things. All of my basses have all been under £300 to buy, with the exception of the NS Wav EUB. After a lot of money spent on cheap to average gear, and many experiments, modding etc... I've finally found my preferred tone and style of of bass. For me, it's a jazz bass at 30" scale. To get here though, even though I've only had moderately cheap gear, I've still spent a small fortune. I'm now in a position where I'm seriously thinking about making an investment in a bass that takes me up to the next level. Even though I'm happy with what I currently have, the decision to do this is three fold: because I want too, and because I've earned it, because I'll appreciate it. I'm glad that it's taken me this long to get here though, as the journey would of been far more expensive if it hadn't

Having a sh*t-hot camera doesn't necessarily make you a better photographer. Although it helps.

Pulled a disc during an epileptic seizure seven years ago, and it still bothers me today. Some more than others. When I'm stressed it hurts more. I obviously carry a lot of tension in my back. Being a graphic designer does not help. As a result, I now play short scale basses. The new Fender Squier Jaguar basses are very comfortable with only a little bit of neck dive. The shorter scale makes playing longer so much easier. It was a good investment to get one. Much lighter than my SX Jazz shortie. The Promethean amp is a god send for me too! A powerful 500 watt head in a portable and modular combo package. Absolutely brilliant. It goes with out saying, good posture and diligent attention to good technique will help enormously. Also, even though my gear is comparatively lightweight, it goes with saying that I always lift it properly with the legs and not the back.

Have you considered the Phil Jones Bass Buddy? Good price, small, very well made, superb tonal control with a lovely limiter and perfect for piezo instruments. My NS Wav EUB sounded lush through it.

As the title says, I'm after chord charts for Aretha Franklin's Today I Sing The Blues? Anyone have them? I know it's a blues, but there's quite a lot of subtle passing chords going on, and it's for a big gig next week, so I want to get right. Can anyone help?

Just get yourself to a sign company. Probably cost you about a tenner for time and a couple of quid for the vinyl.

Jazz is one of those areas that can make or break players. It a good learning experience for sure, and if they're willing to give you a go, then go for it. Do you have an iPhone? If you have, get iRealB app. A fake book in app form. The new version doesn't come with the 900+ charts anymore. But I have the preference file saved, so they can be reloaded back into the app All fully transposable charts in digital, fit in your pocket form!

I'm really loving that Public gear stuff too. It's great to see a company that has such a clear vision, with a good consistent range of products. The whole, look, vibe and attention to detail are really nice. I now have major gas for a shortie jazz, and I'm very serious about getting one. It would be nice to own some decent gear for a change, instead of budget ones all the time, and these are well priced to me.

You don't need as much gear as you think you need to be heard. No one likes to be deafened. If you're bored playing a song, so is the audience. Bass solos are only good in the right context/gig etc. A good bass tone is one thing, it's nothing if it doesn't work in the context of the band. That goes for all instruments of course.

I think Wizards will be my next pup purchase for sure. I can't decide whether to get the Big P/J combo pups for the newly acquired Squier Jag SS, or just replace the j-pup? I'm a bit wary that the new Wizard j-pup would over power the stock p-pup on the SS. What do you think? If I was to replace just the j-pup, what would work best with the stock p-pup? Hammer, 64 or 84's? I'm defo getting a set of hammers for the fretless jazz though

The Superfly is a superb head if you can get one as well. What about the newer MiBass heads from Ashdown, will the bigger one run two four ohm cabs?
