Headline/First on/Somewhere in the Middle
derrenleepoole replied to TimR's topic in General Discussion
Given a choice at the beginning or middling is best for me. Being on last means you sound check first and then wait right till the end of the evening before even playing, and then rigging down. Being one first or middling means you can do you thing and then enjoy the rest of the evening or bugger off if it's a rubbish event I suppose being on first means that they'll likely not be a crowd there. Especially so at larger festivals when people get bladdered the night before. That is at least the perception. However, a recent gig I did at the Limetree Music Festival near Ripon dispelled that myth for me totally. First on at the JB Jazz and Blues stage at 12pm and the whole place was rammed full. Best gig I've played in a very long time and one that will live in the memory for years to come. I suppose it depends on the event I guess. -

I was going to suggest the Manu Katche stuff, but someone beat me to it. Both albums are seriously good, and Pino's playing is sublime. Highly recommended both is terms of bass prowess, but also musical craftsmanship of the highest calibre.

Squier Jaguar Pickup Upgrade?
derrenleepoole replied to DaveMuadDib's topic in Repairs and Technical
I've got a Wizard on my Fender Jazz Special, and it has revolutionised everything! Think that might be the way forward. They are indeed cracking basses. But is there any hope? Will pups alone make this into a great instrument? I installed a seymour duncan invader into my old Squier Stratocaster and the difference was phenomenal, but does the same apply to four strings?
Yes, I think it does. Simple upgrades can make a noticeable difference. But first and foremost great tone comes from the player. Having better 'bits' in your bass just help realise it a bit more. I can great tones out of the Jaguar SS as stock. But the P-bass pickup is far better than the J-bass one. Unlike the bigger 34" Jaguars, the shorties don't have the Seymour Duncan designed pups, or stacked knob volumes dooberies! I did swap out the J-bass pup on the Jag SS with a GFS pro wind pickup from my fretless bass. Now on the Jag SS it didn't make any difference at all, while on my SX Jazz the difference was really noticeable with the GFS's. I think on the Jag SS getting a hotter output pup for the bridge would help balance out the pickups more. This is just an excuse for modding though, as I like doing it. I'm sure I could live with the J-bass pup if I had too -
Squier Jaguar Pickup Upgrade?
derrenleepoole replied to DaveMuadDib's topic in Repairs and Technical
I have the shortie version, and the jazz pickup on that is even worse I too have been looking at a replacement, so would be interested to hear peoples views. Saying that though, the bass is superb for the money. I'm thinking though of going down the Wizard pup route though, as they always get good reviews and the prices are very good. -
Just scored a support slot for Earl Thomas...

EUB vs. Kala U-Bass. Opinions appreciated
derrenleepoole replied to 7string's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Review? REVIEW!?!? That's the most sick-making, w***-tastic advert I've seen in a month of Sundays ... and I'm a big fan of U-Bass.
-
I love surprises. Just been asked to play a trio support slot for the blues soul singer Earl Thomas! Me, keyboardist and female singer. Twenty minutes, fully paid, ten miles from home. Result http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8MBbA-I9Zo...be_gdata_player The singer I'm playing with is Kristianne Robinson, and if any of you do watch X Factor, she made it to boot camp and such. A singer to watch ou for in future for sure. Stoked
The difference is that my advice wasn't misleading. If you do know how it works then you fooled me with what you said into thinking you didn't.
If any individual is really struggling to understand how ohm's work for amp loads, then giving them a load of mathematical interpretations of the problem/solution is indeed very helpful. But that approach assumes that they (the OP in this case) understands such terminology, which is a big assumption to make. Given that the OP asked for layman terms, it's unlikely that this approach will be totally helpful, although it could well be. We have to make the assumption though that the simpler approach is probably better. For the sake of argument... yes, an 8 ohm load into a 4 ohm load is not exactly half. But, for the sake of demonstrating simply that it's a bad idea, and for .7 of an ohm difference, my explanation, while not perfect, is in essence what is going on. Not totally accurate, and not totally incorrect either. The OP should now know that it's a bad idea to mix and match their cabs, even if they don't fully get why. Given enough time, they will. Start simple, get more complicated. I admit it wasn't totally right... but seriously, is it worth an ear bashing for, when the guy only wanted simple? Right, can we all just get along please? Peace.
To be honest, saying that you're halving the impedance each time which is only true if both speaker impedances match up, imo is more confusing than helpful. You shouldn't give advice about something if you don't know how it works.
I do know how it works! My advice was no different to yours. Quote: Yes. You've already got 2 8 ohm speakers on a 4 ohm min load amp. Don't add any more speakers otherwise you'll bugger it up, in Layman's terms! I give up! Later grumpy people :/
What he said! And FWIW if they were in series just add them all up. But like 51m0n says, they'll almost definitely be in parallel. Halving works only if it's entirely 8 ohms or entirely 4 ohms. The OP had a mixture of both, so would do better to follow the formula 1/R=1/r1+1/r2+1/r3... or as 51m0n said, 1/total = 1/speakerA + 1/speakerB + 1/SpeakerC..... through all the speakers stated impedances.
Yes, but the guy wanted simple, layman's terms. You're clearly way more capable than me at grasping the full mathematics of what is required, but not everyone needs that. Start simple for now, get more complicated as your experience improves. Laying on a full barrage of mathematics is likely to be more confusing than helpful - even though it is helpful
-
In very simple layman's terms, you're halving the value each time. So two 8 ohm cabs together, whether they're run out of each individual output of your amp, or run in a chain will result in a total 4 ohm impedence. Adding another cab would NOT be recommended as this would run you below your minimum safe load It took me a while to grasp ohmage terms, but once it sinks in it's very easy to understand.

EUB vs. Kala U-Bass. Opinions appreciated
derrenleepoole replied to 7string's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Would love to get one of these little bad boys, just for fun really. Found a video of an Ashbory being played quite well, intonation is a little out, but it demonstrates that the it's quite versatile: And I found this review of the 5 strings Kala solid body, loving the funkiness of it: -
Which roller saddle bridge for a j-bass?
derrenleepoole replied to derrenleepoole's topic in Repairs and Technical
I've got that bridge on my Lace Helix. It's probably the most complicated and fiddley bridge to adjust that I have ever encountered. I couldn't possibly recommend it even if the mounting holes matched up with your bass.
Cheers buddy... this is why being a member of such a community is invaluable -

Which roller saddle bridge for a j-bass?
derrenleepoole replied to derrenleepoole's topic in Repairs and Technical
The only other roller saddle bridge that I know of is by ABM and is probably even more expensive than the Schaller one.
Cheers buddy, that's the right area for sure. But it would require redrilling, which is what I'd like to avoid if at all possible. I did see this cheap one on eBay, but again it would need redrilling. Mmm... -
Just wondering, if there's a cheaper alternative to the Schaller roller saddle bridges for a j-bass. The bridge position on my SX shortie is a little out, and I don't want to re-drill new holes for the Schaller bridges, plus they're very expensive. Is there a bridge out there that will retro fit the current bridge, but offer roller saddle adjustment, but at a good price?

Just out of interest, and just to quench my curiosity, does anyone here use or know of anyone using the NS NXT Cello as a smaller EUB equivalent?

Playing covers for the first time!
derrenleepoole replied to WILD FROG SHOT's topic in General Discussion
Thanks, guess it is important to keep a sense of perspective. I think we just all want to do a good job really. It should be beneficial for us as a band to play a little out of our comfort zones.
Stretching yourself musically is very good. Many bands do covers these days, and there's no shame in doing them your way. Have you seen the Faith No More rendition of Lay Gaga's Poker Face? Quality Have fun -
Playing covers for the first time!
derrenleepoole replied to WILD FROG SHOT's topic in General Discussion
Just play for the music, and not the ego. It doesn't matter if it's a faithful rendition of said tune, as long as it's played well and played with conviction. I think people will be more understanding of a band that does a job well, but in their own way, rather than one that does it badly and tries to be too much like the original. If people want the original, let them go home and put the record on -
Check out: Lettuce - as funky as it gets Nik Bartsch's RONIN - think Steve Reich meets the tightest funk band ever! Trio ELF - drum and bass jazz Charlie Hunter - an 8 string guitarist who plays great New Orleans funk. No bassist, he does it
-
Wishbass! The bass luthier that is the butt of much derision I like what he does, in a weird sort of way - got to admire the stubborn originality! Some I've seen/heard on Youtube sounded awful. On the other hand, bassists who have bought them and then spent time actually getting the instrument to a more 'boutique' finish have sounded ace. It would interesting to see what you get. Good luck

What can I use to make my sound "better"?
derrenleepoole replied to Herbie The Rad Dorklift's topic in Effects
Do you mean better in the context of the music you perform, or better in general? Like others have said, you have some serious gear with a load of potential tonal variation on tap should you require it. Is it really so bad, or is it a case of finding fault when perhaps there isn't any! Fiddling for the sake of it, so to speak.
