How about 'Morphine' featuring Sax, Drums and a two-string slide bass? I'm just saying...
Morphine are a highly underrated band and I love them

Any kind of wind instrument with bass and drums in trio format is compelling listening. Saxophone is perhaps the obvious choice as it can be the more expressive of the wind family - in the right hands of course. But other wind instruments bring a whole new flavour which shouldn't be over looked. Check out Charlie Haden's birthday concert's with Don Cherry on trumpet. One of the best live albums I've got. Or if you like flute, try out Don Li's Trigon. Trigon is modern improvisation making use of cyclic or repeating pattern improvisation. Not everyone's cup of tea, but I love it

John Paul Jones playing bass for Seasick Steve

It is what it is - good time foot stomping hollering jump joint music! Who cares if it's not strictly authentic, or SS is jumping on a band wagon. He enjoys, he makes money, the crowd love it, everyone is happy! You're all miserable buggers on here And, I could hear JPJ okay - admittedly the headphones were cranked though -
Derren I spoke to Deano about this two days ago. If you call him quick and mention the basschat thing I'm sure he'll sort you out immediately. House Music are 100% up for sorting NS customers out and keeping them happy. Good luck! N
Sorted! Thank you so much for the heads up! Stand is on it's way -
Hi Derren, the new NS stands for the NXT basses are much improved. Who did you get the WAV through? Call Deano at House Music on 020 7357 7703; House Music are the UK importers for NS; I do a bit of work for them too. Deano's a great bloke and will get it sorted for you no problem
Yeah, just had confirmation from NS that this is who I need to contact. This puts me in hope that maybe, just maybe, I'll have a stand for the next gig -
Just wondering, could anyone recommend a good 10" speaker that is better voiced for electric upright bass? I'm thinking of redoing this project cabinet as bought off Lemmywinks (which in turn came from another BC-er). Any thoughts at all?
Sure, he did all the mad stuff with a touch of panache, but ask him to hold down a beat and his timing wasn't exactly strict.
That matters how exactly? If the music kicks who cares right? Plus, he has Lars as a drummer to contend with, and he can't keep time for toffee
^ Brilliant... another nice recommendation. And another £7.90 spent on iTunes! Just bought 746 and can't stop listening to it; very drum 'n' bass as you say and right up my street musically. I may yet be converted to - or enlightened by? - jazz purely on the strength of this thread. Either that or made bankrupt, whichever comes first...
Might I also recommend the truly amazing, and probably my favourite group of all time: Nik Bartsch's Ronin. Saw them live in Manchester last year and got to meet the band. Incredible musicianship and immaculate groove masters! Imagine Steve Reich meets the tightest funk outfit in the world all blended together with a bit of Zen Bhuddism

1 mic to record a jam? (for own listening).

+1 to the Zoom H series. Cheap, simple to use and idiot proof -
Have a look at Corelli's - there reknown for being softer and lighter on the hands. Might be a good choice for a beginner
A really emotional night for my band last night as we played our last gig at Darwen Library Theatre.
A fantastic venue, played there once before for Darwen Live with the then False Negative. Playing it this year again on the Saturday with a full ensemble. Can't wait for this one BTW, is Darren Dean your guitarist?

We had a fantastic gig on Thursday night at the Hop Pocket in Chorley! I can't recommend this venue enough. The guy who runs it has a blues night every week, and it's always packed out with punters. It's taken us 15 months to get back on there, that's how good a venue it is. I had to do the gig on the electric bass, my NS upright stand had failed the night before, so was a bit gutted going into the gig that all my rehearsal was pointless. But all that disappeared as soon as well started, the crowd were just up for it! The whole band played really well too. In fact, one of the best gigs we've ever played. And to top it all off, I was really loving my tone that night. The first time I've actually really used the Sansamp Bass DI, and it was great. Here's a recording of one of the tracks taken from the back of the room using a Zoom H2: Move It On Over by The Cottonhouse Shakers For anyone who's interested, this is my SX Jazz shortie fretless running through the Sansamp into my tiny Ibanez Promethean 1x10 combo with 1x10 Trace extension cab. The room isn't massive, probably 120-150 people in it, but this rig just cuts it man! I'm not even passed half way on the gain or the master volume and it just delivers.

Great news, NS have just emailed me to say that they'll replace the faulty stand at no cost! I've just got to send the unit back to them and they'll ship me another one for free! That is great customer service, and lucky too, as I very nearly ordered another one @tauzero - sorry buddy, but the unit is going back so you can't have the damaged tripod after all. -
^ Holy **** that blew me away! Truly amazing playing. ...I've just bought Green Delay as an impulse-buy on iTunes thanks to your link. Seems I owe you a debt of gratitude for switching me on to something new; and in monetary terms you owe me roughly 2 1/2 pints of beer ;-)
Once you Phronesis, you can never look back All of the albums are very good, but I think Organic Warfare wins it for me. Jasper Høiby appears on the new Ivo Neame album too if you're interested. Also check out Trio ELF and the album 746... totally sick drum and bass inspired jazz that completely works and a killer upright player
Not me, but there were a few stand failures on the WAV4 - I think there was an uprated stand after the first ones shipped and started falling apart. Um, if you're going to be throwing that top bit away, could you throw it away in my direction?
Certainly... I had thought of passing on the stand as a project... so watch this space -
It looks like this is the camera tripod type stand rather than the heavy duty CR one - is that correct? If its not a design fault, it has to be a manufacturing fault. I'm pretty sure you should be covered by the fit for purpose clause of the sales of good act. I had no trouble getting the apple store to give me a new macbook battery when the one in my out of warranty MacBook bulged (I didn't have to make a fuss & they offered the free replacement before I mentioned my expectations in getting it replaced at no cost) Hopefully your retailer will be similary clued-up. Maybe an email to NS-Design will help, I've heard good things about their customer service in the past, although I've never needed after sales help personally. I use both the endpin stand and the heavy duty stand which came with my CR5M - they seem pretty solid and I've had no trouble so far, but I hope the relevant piece on each is made of stronger stuff than yours.
Yeah, it is the older camera tripod stand. If anything, I would of expected the thread into the bass to fail first rather than the unit snapping. I've emailed NS, it will be interesting to see what transpires. I missed a second-hand end pin on here recently, wish I'd bought it now. I've seen the newer model, but at £170 a pop, I'm not in a position at the moment to get another one. -
I guess that when you've replaced the stand, every time you play it will be at the back of your mind .....
Exactly, I think the endpin might be a better choice now -
Well, doing a rehearsal last night for a gig tonight and the bloody stand for the EUB just snaps! No undue stress, no excess gesturing on my part. Luckily I was hold of the bass at the time otherwise it would of crashed to the floor. The most annoying thing is, I've been practicing for this gig and I was going to do the whole gig on the upright. I'd managed to nail a good tone at last and it was all feeling so good. Now I'm doing a gig on the electric, which is fine, but can't do any upright playing until it's sorted. I've email NS to see if they'll offer some sort of customer support, so it will be interesting to see what happens. Anyone else had this happen to them on the NS EUB's?

An early morning bump in hope!

Just a quick shout out to my fellow BC-ers to see if anyone around the Blackburn area of Lancashire has a NS Wav 4 EUB and could loan me the stand for a gig tomorrow night in Chorley? Somehow, without waring I might add, the bit on the stand that connects to the bass has completely sheered off! It happened luckily when I was playing the bass, and not when it was free standing. I've no idea why it's happened. There's clearly a design or manufacturing flaw at work. I'm just grateful that the bass didn't crash to the floor, but equally pissed that a gig I've been rehearsing on the upright for is now just happening on the electric. No big thing really, but still..... Well, maybe just maybe someone on here can help. You guys are great for coming through so fingers crossed

The Cort Action Series basses are very good for the money, very well made and comfortable play. I had the full sized five string and it was superb. I've been on the look out for one of these myself, but they don't come up second-hand often though. Probably a good bass to upgrade the pickup on and maybe an internal preamp?

I'm increasingly coming to the conclusion that bass solos very rarely work. There are exceptions of course, Jaco on Weather Reports 'Herandu' of course, but they're few and far between. For me, the ones that work are in support of the song or composition and could be viewed more as an interlude taken up on bass. So Weather Reports 'A Remark You Made' and even the melody in 'Birdland' are like interlude solos. Sorry to keep referencing Jaco, but he's so easy Even Flea's rare solo in RHCP's 'Naked In The Rain' is more like a musical interlude than a solo. Obviously a 'solo' bass piece without any other instrument support is a different matter, like Portrait Of Tracy. In this context the solo makes sense, as all the attention is purposely directed at the bass, so the all the detail and texture can be appreciated more. I only solo on one song in our band, usually on the break down in How Many More Times - but it's not set at a defined length, and to be honest, I'm pap at it! I know what to do, I know how to do it, but come the solo I resort to tried and tested ideas that very rarely do anything to enhance the song. I'm currently now working on a short eight bar break into a different tune instead, rather than having a widdle fest of no predetermined length that no one gives a damn about, even me Short, sharp and sweet and sounds like it's part of the song's arrangement rather than a poor man's attempt at misguided greatness!
