1. The joy of being with great friends, playing great music for an appreciative audience... it doesn't get any better for me
 2. I've always had a preference for what I would call a medium action - I hate it too low because I don't like the string clatter etc, too high and you can introduce hand fatigue etc (got diddy hands anyway). But seriously, play and upright bass for any length of time and any electric bass will be like playing a ukelele when you go back to it! It's made me realise that the holy grail of action is perhaps misguided, mythical at best! It all comes down to technique. Tone though, well that's a different matter!
 3.
Edit: Any recommendations for stuff of a similar theme to avishai cohen would be appreciated
The mighty Phronesis with Jasper Høiby on bass!
 4.
To be honest, I think the Muff and Wah are the key to his tone. I don't think your choice of amp matters one jot.
You're probably right, but an all valve amp or valve hybrid is probably going to help more in getting that tone without the need for masses of pedals and effects, which can cost a small fortune in of themselves!
 5. Just remembered, check out the new Kustom range of amps. Seriously, they do a 300 watt hybrid head with valve preamp for £230! http://www.thomann.de/gb/kustom_de300_hd_head.htm Also matched with a 2x10 Kustom cab for £150! http://www.thomann.de/gb/kustom_deep_end_210h.htm These are meant to be really good for the money, but as they're so new there's little user feedback yet. I think there's some small clips on Youtube.
 6.
I am advocating for Jazz as an art form.
Can't say fairer than that Bilbo. And I agree that jazz, when played at it's absolute best is truly something magical to behold.
 7. All valve tube amp probably is all you need to get that grit and girth in your tone. Have you considered the Ashdown Little Bastard series or perhaps the Orange Tiny Terrors (not all tube, but they have a tube pre)? They'll be more in line with a considered budget, which I'm presuming you'll have. They'll also put you in good stead for use across a whole range of playing, not just being a Cliff clone
 8.
Like I said earlier,a good musician is a good musician regardless of genre.
+1 - I couldn't agree with this statement more
 9. Without getting into an argument, every form of music has it's good players and bad players, and jazz is certainly no exception. To argue that jazz is better artistically because on the whole it requires more 'skill' is bunkum! There are many unskilled performers out there who play jazz, and many are admired and do make a career for themselves, whether we like it or not. Likewise can be said of other musical genres too. Bilbo, you sort of remind me of me when I was 16 listening to death metal music . I had the attitude that 'my' music was the 'only' music that counted, and like all teenagers sought out clans of individuals who aspired to the same musical tastes and musical conclusions that inspired me. Over time, I've learned to appreciate all facets of music, right across the whole musical spectrum. Jazz is by far the most music I now listen to, but I've learned not to be so judgmental of other forms of music simply because it isn't jazz. I draw just as much enjoyment from folk, as I do bluegrass or rock or experimental electronic music. Do you think Miles Davis would of been so influential if he hadn't embraced other genres such as funk or rock? By your arguments and reasoning, this lesser form of music isn't skilled enough, yet Miles certainly found inspiration from it! If it's good enough for Miles, it's good enough for everyone

 11.
FYI when I came in and commented on "item D", I didn't even know that it had been a basschatter that had said that to her. So don't feel indignant over that.
It's not a problem mate, honestly. I'm not one to hold grudges or take it too personally. I did the right thing by continuing the conversation with the seller and she's happy that nothing untoward was being suggested etc. Like I said, the listing already has bidders, so she can't change it unless she stops it and starts again. The only reason she's posting the comments people are making is because of this very reason. Those of us who know better will know that it's not a Fender, but there are people people out there who don't - just like the seller. So I don't think it's no bad thing to tell someone so, the trick is to get the balance of wording right so it's helpful without sounding like a know-it-all. Of course, as we have seen, this approach will also have its detractors with someone against your opinion of how you did it, and those that see no problem at all. I would be more than happy to have someone tell me if I was incorrect. In fact someone did once, and I ignored them to my cost. Lesson learned there.
 12.
Those are definitely Aria pickups from the 1980s. The top one is an MBI, I believe the bottom is the MBII. You would never find them both on the same series of Aria instruments. This is a pseudo homade bass. The neck seems to be a cheap copy from a very "vintage" instrument, and the body is definitely homemade.
Cheers Tom, good to know.
 13.
Looks like seventies/eighties Aria pickups with a generic 70's far east cheapo neck. The body looks sort of home made with the "matching" control cover.
You could be right. The neck pickup looks slightly skew and the poles don't site right under the strings.
 14. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...T#ht_500wt_1104 Liking the look of this, could be a nice little bass if done up. Anyone recognise the model or confirm it's an early Aria?
 15.
Dude if I have been erroneous in any way with anything I've said please correct me.
Yes, you came in guns blazing and shot me down, in exactly same way you're accusing me of having done to the seller. Does this make sense? Anyway, I'm bowing out from this, it appears that things will start to go around in circles and it's better to avoid any unpleasantries.
 16.
There is no argument on the fact that you were full of good intentions.
Really, doesn't feel that way to be honest, but hey ho!
But elements of what you said to her, no matter how much damage limitation you want to put on it were not true and based solely on one man's iffy opinion. The negative comment you put forward has sent ripples out into the world which may ultimately cost the seller money. I sure she's really happy that "we" helped now.
I'm not trying to do damage limitation. The points were direct and honest - albeit not written entirely with grace, and for this I've already apologised. Which parts were not true BTW? The fact that it's not a Fender, or that it may only be good for spares or indeed be useless? True, I haven't seen the bass, it could be perfectly playable, but a little bit of common sense goes a long way, and if I didn't say it, someone else may have.
This section of the forum is for the discussion of ebay auctions. A fair amount of the content is about the the stupidity of sellers listings and how comical they seem to us enthusiasts. The sellers original listing (before Basschat got involved) was just another laughable listing. So what if she had been a member and had seen the comments on here about her listing? She would have been free to correct the silly mistakes herself... maybe even ask for some advice, instead of having it thrust upon her.
True, she didn't ask for an opinion. But I've been in contact with Linda over several emails and as bidding has started the listing title can't be changed! So, it just goes to show you're not in full knowledge of all the facts and what has transpired since this topic has started! I'll know better next time than to incur the wrath and OPINION of another BC-er by daring to have an OPINION of my own ;-P
 17.
Fair enough pal, let's just forget that you told her to stick it in the bin and get back on topic. Ok back on topic...... I see a comment in her current listing that someone advised her to stick it in the bin. I wonder if this will have an effect on her final price?
One thing that does strike me is this (this goes out to the general public and not aimed at you directly BTW): (nearly) everyone on here is prepared to have a laugh at the expense of the seller because the item has been listed inaccurately. Which I guess is fair enough as it's away from the gaze of the seller. But is it? The seller could well be a member on here or at least have access to it. So which is worse, being direct and honest and trying to be helpful, okay I didn't word it exactly right, but the intention was well? Or, having a snigger at someone behind their back and then claiming the higher the moral ground when someone does something you or others don't agree with? This is what I don't understand about forums sometimes. But hey, we're all grown ups... right?
 18. Hi Ou7shined: all this has been resolved, and Linda the seller of the item is taking it all on board and understood exactly the sentiments being expressed and never once assumed that those writing to her were being sarcastic or judgmental. If anything, I think she's grateful for some help. Opinion is just that, opinion - and we all pull on our experiences as human beings to formulate it. Just as some people saw my comments as rude, others saw it as direct and to the point. It's now all water under the bridge, so let's just get back to topic
 19.
Yep - I read it and wrongly assumed it was sarcastic. So would most people, I think..? FWIW, I'm not suggesting you accused the seller of trying to rip people off. My comments were actually in reply to Johnston.
No worries mate... see, forums - easy to misread them
 20.
I prefer to be nice to people, unless I think they're deliberately trying it on, that is. My Dad is retired now, and spends a lot of time selling interesting and unusual things ('junk') on eBay. A lot of the time, he's not quite sure what he's selling but he does some research. Sometimes he gets it wrong. Most people send him nice messages pointing it out, and giving him advice on what he actually *does* have, so he can update the listing accordingly. Sometimes, he gets varying degrees of sarcasm and abuse from angry anoraks who assume he's trying to rip people off. Guess which people he'd rather hear from?
But your wrongly making the assumption that the intended message is meant to be sarcastic, which it wasn't. All this highlights is the difficulty in these situations when something with well intended notions can be interpreted differently by different people. I never assumed that the buyer was trying to rip anyone off, I never said I was an expert. It's also worth noting that those people who react most strongly to what has happened actually end up using the very language and tone that they're reacting against, more often than not without realising it. It's all water under the bridge now, so let's move on and be happy people
 21. Before this carries on, I've emailed the seller and apologized for my tone of the first email, and explained my reasonings a little better. Hopefully that will be the last of it. Apologies to anyone who's sensibilities I've offended.
 22.
It's not that you did it - it's just a little harsh in tone. No-one likes getting messages like that.
Yeah I know, but what you all don't know is that I've since emailed Linda and explained why a little better.
 23.
Comment D emailed to her is both presumptuous and overly harsh. Fair play to her for adding that gem of advice to the revised description - mind you, what can you do when you don't know much about the subject and an "expert" contacts you.
I never said I was an expert, just stating the obvious. You're all keen to take the piss when it suits you - some clueless person posts a bass for sale with no idea what it is and you all laugh at their stupidity! Yet when someone does something about it you're judgmental and all high and mighty! Jeez, sorry I offended your sensibilities, just thought I'd try and do the right thing. In fairness, comment D is very direct and true - it's should be sold under the understanding that it's not a Fender, and MAY only be good for spare parts or might be worthless. That may not of come across properly admittedly in the way I wrote it, but those in the know will or should understand. I just don't understand this forum sometimes
