1. If it hasn't been mentioned already, you can get a Realbook on the iPod, called iRealbook I think (imaginative I know . It's a very useful and handy little app to have in your pocket if all you need is a quick glance at the charts of jazz tunes etc. The app will also transcribe the charts to different keys too. PS... I think it works on Android phones as well, not just iPod.
2. Surely it would be as easier to post a full list in the thread rather than replying to each individual email enquiry with said list? Just a thought
3.
+1 Unless the pickups are knackered, however, everything being well I couldn't agree more.
Good point! No point in having an ace bass with great acoustic tone if the pickups are poo!
4. That's a lovely 80's tastic bass Wonder how much it's worth?
5. MY drummer fried might be interest in the drum rings, and I've sent him message, so maybe a sale there. I'll let you know either way.
6.
Thanks Derren... I'm glad someone agrees with my earlier post :-) Jennifer
Yeah, simple things make for simple solutions I think many musicians are searching for the holy grail of tone, when a great percentage of it is in your hands before you even get to the amplifier stage. That was an invaluable lesson I learned very early on, and it's one I'm very thankful for. I suspect in regards to the OP's question, a lot of the problem is probably in technique and not knowing how to push and pull the instrument and bending it to your will
7. Bargain instruments are just the best! I use SX basses all bought from here, and they are exceptional instruments for the money. I think a lot of people are beginning to wise up to the fact that cheap, doesn't necessarily mean crap
8. Before you go down the whole route of do I need a new amp, bass, strings etc., there is something that you can do that will help determine which route to go to help you get the sound you require. I was always taught by my old teacher (Steve Berry of Loose Tubes) that the tone of any instrument should always be determined without an amplifier. Why? An amplifier will always do it's job, regardless of the instrument. Sure, some amps colour the sound, but understanding how your tone is before you get to the amp stage will help enormously. I NEVER try out a bass in a shop through an amp, because all you're doing is trying out the amp and not the bass! If I were you, I'd get myself in a nice quite room, get the bass out, and simply play the help out of it acoustically. See if you can get the tone your after this way. It's worth noting that the way you play will have a huge impact on your tone as well. So finger placement, attack etc, will all play a huge part, not just the bass. If you can get a reasonable tone acoustically, then it should be a simple case of getting an good amp to deliver that tone, but at volume. It's possible that the amp you're using is making the tone worse. If in doubt, level off all the EQ settings to flat and start with fresh ears. If you're getting a sound you like through your bass, but not your amp, you know where the problem lies.
9. This is well priced, especially with a hard case. Not a huge fan of the Ursa headstock design, but it works well on the 5er models. These are great instruments for sure. Good luck with the sale

Hi

Gary Crockett I presume? Welcome to the club! You'll love it, it's a way of life
11. What a great idea for a thread I'll see what I can dig up!
12. The H1 and H2 share the same mic capsules, but the H1 is stereo only. The H2 features an internal navigation menu, whereas all the functions for the H1 are on the outside only - great for quick acces, but all too easy to knock and change without realising it. The H1 is armed as soon as it's switched on, the H2 is not. The H2 features additional post and pre features such as limiter and compressor, as well the ability to normalize recordings afterwards etc, the H1 does not. The H2 is a fantastic bit of kit, and is perfect of band and rehearsal recording. The H1 will do exactly the same job, but without the bells and whistles. I have the H2 which I use all the time, but I'm also getting the H1 to carry around in my pocket. It's so stupidly cheap that it makes sense to have one
13. What kind of voicing do these give? Louder, growlier etc? Also, could you give me some sizes please, as I'm not sure they'll fit in my shortie jazz bass, so better check first? Cheers... Derren.
14.
Mateybass did a few mods for his with online pics. I think most of the mods for the Palatino were to solve problems not present in the Stagg, such as the tinny trebly piezo and lack of stand. The Stagg has a commercially available stand and the tone is good out of the box Common things to do on a Stagg are lining the control cavity, wrapping the endpin to solve the rattle problem and using foam/rubber dampeners at the bridge
Those mods seem about right for the Stagg. The Palatino, which I've owned, was a great bass on paper, but had too many problems to get it right. The weight in particular was problematic, as foot couldn't support the weight properly and would often slip over time, and the weight would also pull the bass around and make for awkward playing. The Stagg have it right I think. It is after all a copy of the Aria SWB, and that seems to be a winning design
15. Great stuff! Now, where's the car, I feel a road trip coming
16. I was wondering if anyone has or knows of any modding done to the Stagg EUB? In the short time that I owned the Palatino EUB, there sprung up a huge modding scene on them - things like stands for hands free playing, pickup upgrades etc. Was wondering if anyone had done something similar? Annoyingly, the Stagg when it first came out was £250, it's now closer to £350. More annoyingly, I had the chance to purchase one for £200 way back in the day and never did. I'm considering one, but I'm interested to see if anyone has improved upon the design?
17. For the very short time that I owned a DB I give these a shot too. They're specifically for rockabilly and bluegrass style playing - lots of heavy slap percussive work etc. The feel of them is very odd, being all smooth and fat as anything. I personally didn't get on with them. However, I gave them to an acquaintance who does rockabilly DB and at first he hated them, but now absolutely swears by them.
18. Man, that looked like an ace trip. You lucky thing you I have to congratulate you on some great bass playing mate. You're obviously very talented. Reminds me a bit of Jonas Hellborg etc. I would repeat some of the other comments about the drum programming on some of the tracks. It's all a bit too rigid for me, and feels very static as a result. I know that getting a musician capable of playing that type of very tight multi time signature stuff is very difficult, but a real drummer would bring this music alive in my opinion. If a real drummer is not an option, maybe have a look at how Squarepusher uses drum sequencing. Maybe making the drums more Squarepusher-esq might work better as it will feel more deliberate, rather than someone trying to sequence realistic drums in the absence of a real drummer? Does that make sense? All kudos though matey
19. Jazz mixed with extremely tight funk and uber minimalist zen groove philosophy = Nik Bartsch's RONIN
20.
His budget is £500, so I doubt he wants to spend £600 on a 1x10 combo for doing stoner rock! There are always dusty old 410s on eBay that go for £150 or so, that would make much more sense. Like this, maybe. Or this.
Actually, they're under £500 quid now But yeah, you're right, not quite right for the material he's doing! Didn't read that bit
21. Do what some of us on here have done and have a look at the Promethean amps. Essentially a 1x10 combo at 250 watts/500 with an extension speaker or they now do a 2x10 combo version. But, and this is the best bit, the head is removable for use with other cabs! So a very versatile amp solution for all eventualities. I find the Promethean to be a very, very good amp. Incredibly well built, superb features, great weight, great tone and superb price! They also do a range of other cab setups to match with the head. Worth considering for sure.
22. Damn! I'd love the Dean Pace.... Mmm... let's see how far the funds can stretch?
23. I really, really wish I could take this off your hands, but I've simply no room Good luck with the sale anyways
