1.
Missed the post on this Derren, not far from me either. MUST check Basschat more regularly.
Yeah, this part of the forum is quite quiet I've noticed. I took some rough videos if anyone is interested. http://youtu.be/CQ1WXCYynm4 http://youtu.be/UNN1rFqxAEw Please excuse my poor iPhone video swagger
2. I would suggest a preamp for the mic too. You may have to consider mixing several sources to get the desired sound. So a mic or two or three on the bass, an ambient room mic and maybe even a mic in front of your amp. Obviously not ideal, but it may yield good results if a little more time consuming.
3. I'm ordering one soon. I'm hooked too There's a guy on Youtube doing some amazing videos demonstrating just how good and versatile the uBass actually is. It's his videos that made me make the decision to get one. http://youtu.be/AjVCaTz-kF0 http://youtu.be/behtdlPnL6A
4. Damn, thought I'd got away with it
5. Well, obviously no one was interested, or didn't see the thread. But the video above does not do justice to just how good this band was last night. They're playing Matt & Phred's in Manchester tonight. It's their last gig in the UK and I strongly urge you guys to go and check them out. Great musicians playing mind bending time signature tunes. Imagine Allan Holdsworth with really strong african rhythms etc and you sort of there. Sort of.
6.
Here.
I'm going to borrow that if you don't mind! Lovely stuff
7. This is a great topic of discussion. Let the music do the talking and not the ego I guess
8. Any other features or distinguishing marks are always helpful too. For example, you may have a Girls Aloud decal on the flightcase for example! Stolen goods can travel far, so any information to help identify the item better will help. You just never know. Good luck.
9. You won't regret your decision to get the Promethean. I was one of the first on here to do so, and it's every bit as good as any gear from Mark Bass, SWR, GK etc that I've owned. People I think at first wrongly assumed that Ibanez wasn't capable of producing a pro featured portable combo. The name informed a prejudiced judgement of the amp without people even trying it! The Promethean is very portable, very loud, with very versatile tone shaping at a very good price. The fact that the head comes off and can be matched with any cab is a simple no brainer! There's only one other amp manufacturer to offer this same feature and that's Mesa Boogie. Welcome to the club
10. Ibanez Promethean is a very good combo to consider. Don't be put off by the Ibanez brand name. It's a 10" combo with a 500 watt detachable head with a gig bag option. Very good quality, very portable and very well priced. Depending on the EUB model you may need a preamp to match the impedence of the input.
11. If you're in or around Darwen in Lancashire, a group called Sawadu are playing in the Belgrave (3 In A Bar) tonight (21st Nov). Admission is free and it's an impromptu gig done as part of a tour. A guy called Hubert Dupont on bass and I'm liking his vibe! Hopefully see some fellow BC-ers there
12. Interesting... I'd still like to experience it. But yes, of course, seeing a band live and experiencing the interaction between its member's is where it's at. Just out of interest, how well did they perform when in darkness?
13. I'm a huge Phronesis fan, and Jasper's playing is simply astounding. In fact, I'm listening to them right now Would love to see them live. I imagine if you're a 'fan' you'll get a lot more out of it, or maybe not. The second set done in complete darkness interestingly has been well received by critics and fans alike, but I guess not everyone like's such things. Playing in the dark would be a challenge on most instruments, but must be terrifying and incredibly challenging on an upright bass! Maybe that's the point though. The challenge of doing things we take for granted with our sight, reduced to pure listening?
14.
Me too! Adrian said they'd even consider a 30" Elwood Jazz 6 string! They've not done one yet but are sure it would be possible... Eude
Oh man... that would be awesome!
15. Oh, that is lovely... I so want a 30" Elwood Jazz. You're lucky man. Enjoy
16. Play, play and play. I remember being stuck in a rut a long time ago. Simply get stuck in there and over time the inhibition and nerves will melt away as your confidence grows and the familiarity of the instrument takes over. You probably won't even realise it's happening until one day you look back and realise it has.
17. If you like funk et al, check out some of the 'jam' band scene with the likes of: Stanton Moore http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U8d7-VJ0dQ4&feature=related Charlie Hunter (with Skerik) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PmUeZkr9H4k Most of these band's actively encourage recording of their gig's, and loads of high quality recordings are available for free on the Internet Archive.
18.
Wait for or go to another post by the same person and 'Like' it. This will cancel out your Neg.
So obvious really when you think about it *slow day at work*
19. I have jittery mouse disposition... what happens if I neg someone by mistake? Can a mark be retracted? *Apologies if this has been asked already*
20. That was great, thanks for sharing
21. From Gagarin's Point Of View by Esbjorn Svensson Trio. A masterclass in understatement! http://youtu.be/H3f1Uq2jcL8
22. My favourite bassist isn't really a bassist at all! I'm talking about the very talented 7/8 string guitar player Charlie Hunter, who does all his own bass line accompaniments! Try to imagine Joe Pass, but super funky and you're sort of there. I love the bass tone he gets out of the three bass strings on the Novax guitar he plays. A really unique tone, not to everyone's taste, but it works so well in the context of what he does! I don't know how else to describe it really... but it works for me. http://youtu.be/ypL4Zo04ONw I do get bored of hearing bassists with brittle tone, and I think this is what I like about this guys stuff. It kind of hits you in the gut Plus, he has a great bass rig for a guitarist!
23. A great singer, but her song choices and material she does just leaves me cold... :/
24. There's been lots of discussion on this very topic in the past, just search BC, and the general rule is you get what you pay for. The Harley Benton is a Palatino under a different name. As an EUB, the Stagg and Harley are passable. But, and this is crucial thing to remember, both of them would require significant setup to get them better than stock. This means better strings, probably a decent preamp and possible some work on the fingerboard. When you factor in these additional costs as well as the cost of the bass, you're in the terrority of getting a second hand NS Wav EUB which sell for about £500 to £600. By comparison, these are significantly better and will offer better playability and resale ability in the long run. Both the basses you've mentioned are good, I've owned both, but when compared to something like the NS Wav, there's a significant difference. The Stagg for example is awkward to hold, the rests are clumsy a nd uncomfortable. The Palatino is heavy, the stand is weak and slips over time. The preamps on both basses aren't great IMO. Seriously, look on he second hand market for a WAV. In all likelihood a second had NS will probably of hand some money spent on it terms of good strings. So not only are you getting a better bass, you're getting good strings. I sold my NS for £550 second hand, and it had a set of strings on it in the region of £100 when new, and it came with a bow! Second hand will get you more for your money. The investment will be worth it.
25. Found a great uBass video on YouTube with Bakithi and James Hill playing Billie Jean: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHC4KjglouQ&feature=youtube_gdata_player
