1. Not had this long and not 100% sure whether to sell as I waited ages to get a good Rickenfaker and I'd be surprised if I see a nicer one. As a Jazz bass man I'm having issues adjusting to the body shape therefore I'm thinking of selling this beauty. This is a 1975 (dated by Bassassasin) Japanese Rickenbacker copy by CMI. Thru neck, 2 inputs, absolutely incredible condition given the age. The bass has been set up by Tito Dalmedo of Fulwood (see recommended Luthiers thread) and has been re strung with ernie ball round wounds. It had some very dead looking flat wounds when I got it. Possibly the most surprising thing about the bass is the light weight. It's noticably lighter than my standard Jazz bass. The sound is incredible. Really huge bassy thud, especially the neck pickup. My band are moaning at me for thinking of selling. The bass comes with a rather odd hard case I got with it. It is basically a guitar hardcase with a hole where the top 2cm of the headstock points out. Not great, but I'll throw it in regardless. Price is £400 collected from Preston.
2. I'd love a black Korina jazz just finished in oil with some sort of gorgeous exotic neck (no finish). Don't know why Black Korina isn't more popular for making guitars basses, it looks awesome and reports about the tone are always positive.
3. Now down to £500 no offers. Going on ebay if not sold very soon.
4.
Sorry Noel - it's a Fujigen bass, the very small/fine chequers on the binding are the main giveaway here. The serial's Fujigen too - read the first digit as a letter: I, the 9th letter of the alphabet, representing the 9th month. Second 2 digits are the year and the remainder is sequential production run for the month. Meaning this was the 6773rd instrument built at Fujigen Gakki in September 1977. Ithangyew!!! Anyway, I'd be 99% certain it was an Ibanez - in Europe/the UK (not sure whereabouts you are, Gunnar) far & away the most common examples of Fujigen 4001 copies were branded as Ibanez. I think this is a late example of an Ibanez 2388B/DX, these had their specs updated to resemble mid 70s Rickenbackers, and used more authentic pickups/surround. Earlier 2388Bs had full-width sparkly inlays copied from pre '73 Ricks (as was the chequer binding) and used Gibson-style chrome pickups. I assume when Fujigen started building 4001 copies (as far as I can ascertain around 1971/72), replica pickups weren't in production, so they just used whatever was available. Anyway excellent pics Gunnar, and the bass looks to be in great condition for its age. Is the truss rod cover a real Rickenbacker item, or do you know if it's a replica? If it's real (which it might well be if it's been on the bass since the 70s), the back-screened Plexi covers are very sought-after by Rickenbacker collectors & fans. Jon.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, I'd love it if you wrote a book on the history of Japcrap/Rickenfakers mate.
5. Those music bakers look really cool hybrids. If the pickups are sh*te I suppose replacements are easily sourcable as well. Are these a brand new? I've never seen one before.
6. Hi, I'm selling a fender deville 60 watt valve amp for a mate of mine. Actually one of the nicest sounding amps I've heard and the only reason he's selling is because he needs a car. Mint condition, gigged twice. £500 no offers. Must be collected from Preston If you get in touch with me I'll pm you his mobile number. Cheers.
7.
It's a pity they discontinued these - They were much nicer than the Jazz version. Best of luck with the sale, Nick.
I totally agree. I've played 2 of these and both were excellent instruments. That's a lovely colour too, you don't seem to see as many of the red or blue ones about. Good luck with the sale.
8.
There aren't any black-bound copies, as far as I know, certainly not from the 70s era because there were no black-bound 4001s to copy. This is the same "modified" one that's popped up a few times in the last couple of months: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/4001-BASS-GUITAR_W0QQitemZ270563145415 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/4001-BASS-GUITAR_W0QQitemZ270568782343 And old Uncle Ash is trying to flip it for a poxy £50 profit - or more like £15 after Ebay Tax. It must be a total dog. J.
Yeah that does seem a very quick turn around for the bass. There must be something wrong with it. This is a murky world I've entered!
9. I used to have loads of problems with this when I started out on bass. My advice is tol leave it to harden. Either way mate, it'll be fine for Saturday.
10.
Ashdigits presents another shafty.
Looks a nice one at a decent price. Another black binding one as well. Aren't they meant to be rare?
11. Wow, looks lovely. I always lean towards the stripped down simplicity of the 4000 personally but know that I'd just end up buggering about with this and adding a hi gain pickup and, well just ruining it basically. Very cool bass. I'll watch with interest.
12. I like the Gotoh. When I got my Mexican Jazz I soon got totally pissed off with stock bridge. I play hard and the G string saddle used to flap about like crazy and the thing seemed to be made of the same thing they make baked bean tins out of. I got the Gotoh over the Badass for the following reasons: 1) It's cheaper 2) It doesn't require any pissing about 3) I prefer the look of it. 4) It does exactly the same thing. It took me 5 minutes to install and the change in sound was very noticable (lots of debate on this but I'm telling you, it really does give a fuller sound with more sustain).
13.
after looking at musicman stuff for a while, ive started looking at rickenbaker type basses. can't afford the real thing yet and not sure they are worth the price tag. i've seen a couple copies ibanez looks good and a tokai which is brand new but not sure of theyre quality. if anyone could point me in the direction of a good quality copy that is being made currently, would be apprieciated. i found an ibanez copy from the 70's for £750 worth it?. i've not came accross a bad ibby yet so that would be the main contender, but if there is other decent ones would like to have a look. thanks in advance
CMI ones are nice. Heres one I picked up for £400 on here. Sounds really genuine. http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=82308&hl=cmi I agree though, with £750 you should just wait and get the real thing.
14. Personally I quite like the bass. The only part I'd take issue with is the rank funghi (?)under the bridge cover. That's pretty gross.
15. I'm a Jazz bass man really but I like the Aerodynes. A mate who I shared a practice room with used to have one and it was lovely. Really well put together, looked awesome, big growly sound. Saw him play it for a few gigs and the tone was very big and bassy. Although...if you already have a modded P bass you love (and a Jazz you seem to like) it could be argued this bass would be a bit pointless in your setup? I dunno, it's not like I can talk with the amount of basses I have!
16. My band, Pencil In,have a gig at Sub 61 in Manchester on Friday night. I was wondering if anyone has played the venue and what did you think of it?
17. Go Squier. The new stuff is pretty faultless.
18. Great review mate and I'm glad you like the bass. I've got the same model in blue and I can't leave it alone!
19. Wonder what this is/was? 70s project
