Thanks, Andy. The MDF primer interests me. Do you know whether it is transparent or white? The website doesn't tell.
It dries transparent matey
Just to make sure is it this? http://www.tonetechluthiersupplies.co.uk/L...duct-flyer.html Are you sure it doesn't require the 'spray handle attachment'? http://www.tonetechluthiersupplies.co.uk/F...duct-flyer.html Is it practical to go straight to this one and avoid the sealant? http://www.tonetechluthiersupplies.co.uk/L...duct-flyer.html
It comes with two standed aerosol spray tops one coarse one fine. Used it on walnut and cherry with good results on subsequent top coats of clear laquer frome tonetech. If in doubt speak to or email Barry there Although this http://www.wickes.co.uk/Quick-Drying-MDF-P...71?source=123_4 is an MDF primer it works fine for wood as MDF is a more difficult material to paint so this is more adhesive and isn't spray if you would prefer to brush it on A similar spray would be OK too Andy
Excellent afternoon. Thanks to Born 2B Mild and Yorks5stringer for getting this off the ground. Great venue and some very very nice basses (although my head is still hurting from trying to play Jim's 9 string monster!).
A good turnout and well organised. Thanks guys was well worth the trip Andy

Was just wondering what gear people are bringing along. I'm willing to bring my rig (GK700rbII sbx 410 and 115 cabs)+ some basses but if someone else has already arranged to bring something similar there wont be a point and it will save this poor sp@z from struggling Also, I'm travelling from Bridlington, and have some space in the car for up to three others so if anyone wants a lift from Brid, Driffield Pocklington, York areas, let me know. Andy

Hi Wayne. If you want to do it because you enjoy it then charge to cover costs and throw in your time for free. If it's a potential business then you need to be realistic on costs. Looking at the stuff you've done I would say defo go for it mate! Andy

I have a few nice basses, a 'ray, an overwater perception which I love, a USA jazz deluxe, and a homemade 5, but every time I sit down to practice I automatically pick up the 'ray without thinking about it. They all have their own character and I enjoy them all. yet every time I turn on the amp I'm holding it again. Anyone else have an favorite they don't realise? Andy
What kind of tone are you looking for?
Hi Steve I used to have a bass pod xt (the bean shaped one) but only used the distortion on it. I let that go to Cetera a couple of months ago as it was too complex for a relative novice like me so just looking for a rock distortion sound and maybe build up from there. Like I said, a bit of a virgin where pedals are concerned mate. Some of alternatives suggested so far are a bit more than I'd like her to pay, where the Ashdown is only £57 plus delivery Andy
-
Mrs 'crip is treating me to a distortion/overdrive pedal for xmas. Been looking at the Ashdown james LoMenzo hyperdrive. Is it any good, or should I look at alternatives? Bit of a pedal virgin to be honest... Andy

Don't get down if you're not happy with it Eddie, I had to take all the laquer off my project and do it again when I spotted a ding I'd missed. Spend some time finishing it, I like the way it's going, really 60's style I think. Like a burns or a Vox. Andy
Just relieved Andy of his Bass Pod XT... and very nice it is too. Cheers Andy for being so patient! Thoroughly recommended as a seriously nice and helpful gent!
Cheers Gary Enjoy mate Andy

Looking good mate. it's a good idea to mount everything and get a feel of how it's going to end up, so you can make any adjustments . It's looking a bit 'Burns Bison' which I like Andy
Unlucky about the dots man but looks amazing really love it. How many frets is it then?
Hi Eddie It's 30 fret two and a half octave, but the cutaway makes it difficult as I said. Miscalculation I guess, but hey, I'm happy for a first build, and to be honest how often do you get up that far/ Andy
-
Thanks Guys Andi, I think you're right about the maple, and it wasn't expensive, thanks though for your donations, it will be incorporated in another project soon. Got a lot of bits like laquer, fretwire etc from Tonetech and found them great to deal with. Bill is really helpful. Hi Sy, It turned out OK didn't it? The cutaway below the finbgerboard should have been a little deeper to allow better access to the higher frets, but having hands like JCB shovels doesn't help much Post some sounds??? That would be a bit beyond my skills maybe, but I'll see what I can do. We're all fine thanks, regards to you and M, Andy

Hi troops, Well, it's finished apart from rectifying a couple of mistakes. It plays good and sounds great, so I'm feeling quite chuffed with my little self although it could be better, but for a first full build I'm happy. Mistakes: nut spacing bridge spacing dots on the neck. Controls cover not the best fit but better than plastic I think. All stuff I can sort apart from the dots where the 12th fret is now 11th fret and everything higher is a fret out (I don't know how, probably tired as I only got to work on it late) Need to spend more time getting to know the pre as it's quite different to anything I've used before, but the sounds available are vast. I buggered up the wenge for the fingerboard (although it will be usable for a smaller project) so ended up with some birdseye maple from Bill at Tonetech. and here it is...
Hi Andy I get the impression you're bass buying at present or considering an upgrade path? You're trying to break down a bass into cost options. OK one thing to be clear on is that a maple topped bass with a 'superb 3D flame' won't sound different from a maple topped bass that is just 'nice'. Some things are cosmetic, however... No manufacturer picks crazy materials for a neck most are made of maple or similar woods. A cheap bass may have used a decent piece of maple but the frets won't have been done so well, the neck won't be shaped well (might suit your hand though), the finish may be horrible and sticky/glossy, the fret ends may be sharp. These make a big difference to tone because our human hands are playing that neck and ouch, wearing fret-ends smooth yourself is annoying. More of the same... maple necks feel hard to play and you can tell they are more harsh/zingy (I like mine) whilst rosewood is warm/fuzzy/indistinct? The distinction between the good descriptive words and bad descriptive words depends of the care taken by the maker and what your ear expects. At present my ears seem obessed with fuzzy/thumpy sounds and I'm falling out of love with my clean, crisp, piano-like Ibanez (which is all maple, neck and body). Now when I played a gig last week I changed basses andf thought I was giving different sounds. Did the band notice? Did my wife in the audience notice? Nah, not a bit of it... but I noticed and I'm doing the playing ;-)
Hi Cytania I am just about to complete a build, the body is cherry with a walnut top the neck is cherry/mahogany 5piece with a birdseye maple board, I've used an ACG 02 pre with a single Nordstrand mm 5.2 pup. It was going to have a wenge board but in a sp@z moment i buggered it So it's all together and plays, but being new to the pre it's taking some getting used to. Just some final tweaks on the set up to finish. With the cherry being softer for the neck I reinforced it with some high tensile steel rods, and left the neck a little thicker (stingray-ish). I love the sounds I'm getting, but how much I attribute to the pre and how much to the woods is what prompted my question matey Will post some pics on the build thread in the next day or so ( will try to disguise the errors ) Andy
-
Thanks guys, I understand what you are saying and appreciate you taking the time to explain it to my small brain, however I still get the impression that the wood contributes only in a small way to the tone, and the priority when buying, or building, a bass is the hardware/electronics. The woods have an importance when looking for a particular sound, but having read some threads where in band situations the guy at the PA desk can destroy the sound you have struggled to create, does it have that much importance? I don't gig so I can't comment on that. But thanks (particularly Alex, I'm too far away for the SE bash mate but thanks anyway and I hope it goes great) to all for your input. I get it now. Andy
Well i've finally got it planed and thicknessed. The good news is that we went down to leven to a shop run by some bloke called brian fell and he ran it through the planer/thicknesser for free. So now it's nice and smooth on the top and bottom and exactly 45mm which is just over 1 3/4". Here's a little piccy: I whapped the straightedge clamp on there to get it together for the time being. I'm probably going to have to buy some actual clamps. Probably some F clamps or something.
Hi Eddie Looks good mate try these www.transtools.co.uk for cramps mate, they have some a bit cheaper, maybe not best quality but adequate for the Job. Based at Hunmanby near Scarborough They are also on ebay. Andy
