Happy Shuttle 6 owner here - bought second hand a couple of years ago, gigged and rehearsed with weekly since and the only prob I've had is the pre-amp valve packing in, but no serious issues with the amp itself.

I spent my second year of high school playing the drums (terribly) and then guitar (horrendously) before a mates dad spotted the gap in our line up and - probably as I was the least capable guitarist - lent me his bass. It was the first instrument I really got my head round, and the only one I've played long-term in a band. I've since come back to guitar, as I write a lot of the stuff for my current band and have just started a stint playing lead guitar in a covers band (most nervous I've been on stage in a long time - totally out of my comfort zone!) and also got a much better grasp of the drums, but bass just feels like home. I can tell I'm a bass player because I've always felt totally happy getting another guitarist to play my songs/parts, but having somebody else play bass for me woud just feel [i]wrong[/i]!!

It's not for me, it's a band I'm working for - if it was my dollar getting spent I'd buy an SVT610 - like I already have I'm going to look into replacing the speakers, as replacing the cab and it's flightcase is a big dollar purchase compared to the cost of new drivers. Any feedback on the suitability of the Eminence BP102-4 or alternatives would be more than welcome! EDIT: Alex/all you other experts - Eminence quote .38 Qt's, is that the right end of the spectrum for sealed cab use? Cheers, Mike

Would the Eminence BP102 drivers that Lozz suggested be suitable, or am I better off suggesting he changes his cab setup? Am I overstating the damage the 8 ohm cab will do to the 4 ohm SVT2, or is it a likely contributor to his reliability issues? Cheers for your ace advice (as always!) Mike

Alright guys, A band I've just started teching for are having some reliability issues with the bass rig. It's an SVT2-Pro and a 410HE. The valves have recently been changed by a previous tech, but looks like the bias hasn't been set properly. Had some problems with the amp intermittently cutting out. I've pointed out that they're running an 8ohm cab off a 2/4ohm valve head, which is going to cause some upset. What I was wondering is if anybody knows the impedance of the indivdual drivers in the SVT410HE as I haven't had the chance to get the back off yet. If they're 8 ohms I can rewire to 2 and match it properly to the amp - if they're 32 then it's off to the shops! If any of our wiser members want to chip in with suggestions, feel free! Cheers, Mike

Haven't used the SD to compare, but I'll always throw in a good word for Wizard. Have a Thumper and an 84 in a Squier PJ and they transformed the bass from an old beater that was kept for sentimental reasons, to a bass that I'm happy to use on stage alongside my 'proper' ones. The quality of the service from Andy swings it for me - you can't ring up Seymour and tell him just how you'd like your bass to sound, and get a pick-up hand wound from him that does it for you!

Yeah, the Cavern is a bit out of the loop of the unsigned original band scene - it's main focus is the cover band circuit these days. The in house backline has been replaced (fairly recently I think) with the stuff risingson mentioned above (they used to have an Ashdown stack that I never got on with). The back room is a nice big stage and the sound is usually pretty good in there, so it's not a bad gig to play in that sense. If you can shift the tickets then go for it and have a boss one!!

Had to post because I'm bubbling over with excitement. I left my band of two years before Christmas under a bit of a cloud - disappointed with a lack of action and an excess of attitude - and ended up out of touch with a bunch of guys that I'd worked with for a long time (5+ years!). After never having had the confidence to do it in all my years of playing, I went off and started my own band with the noisy rock tunes I'd been writing and got lucky enough to have my first choice musicians get involved. After 12 years in bands always playing someone else's tunes, it's so exciting to be doing something so personal. We've booked our debut gig today and I'm literally buzzing with excitement, I can feel my heart pounding. Guess I just wanted to throw something up here since there's often so many posts about people being disheartened with bands/music/bass playing and it's a shame to see good players (and good people) be let down doing what they love. We all love playing here on BC, I think we should all just go for it head on and make what we can of it. I can't wait!!! </overexcitedfeelgoodpost>

Did a year or two of really shabby guitar playing before converting when I was about 14. Eventually learned to play guitar to a decent standard too, have done the odd gig here and there on guitar (mostly acoustic stuff) but do use it writing songs for my band. +1 to Noel about the drums - playing drums, or at least understanding them better than I used to, has made me a much better player, and improved my arrangements too.

If my other half saw this, she'd have me halfway down the M6 in the van by now! We're down to 3 cats, a giant Japanese Akita, and George the bearded dragon will be joining us next week. I'm [i]this[/i] close to blocking the IP addresses of all the pet rescue websites because our little house/zoo won't hold many more! Good luck with the rehoming, good that CP have found space for so many!

Love it, but about to get my soldering iron out on it again - the footswitches Ashdown supply seem to be mega unreliable, keep intermittently losing or attenuating my signal, although you can get it back by giving the side of the switch a little knock - annoying in praccy, no good at all on stage. Third bad switch I've had from them. It's a great sounding pedal, but they definitely saved themselves a few pennies on the quality of the parts!

Wow, that's my first exposure to the two-tone blue - we've come a long way! I got on board when it was still 'Basstalk' if I remember right. Hasn't half grown since then!

Don't know the venues you're referring to, but done plenty of small clubs on the unsigned toilet circuit where the PA is just used for the essentials and bass has been run off backline - nothing unusual about that! All depends on the size of the room and the spec of the PA system really.

Well, if your family life is going to be ok with things (sounds from the above like it's in a pretty good place!) then I'd say go for it - even if you don't end up staying long term with this tribute band, it's on your CV and could be a leg up to even bigger and better things. The chance to go 'pro' and actually earn a reliable living doesn't come for many of us, so if you're in the position to do it then I'd say get in there!! Best of luck with whatever you choose

It's the old EHX stuff that had a different connector (3.5mm jack?) - our guitarist is quite happily using a Memory Boy and two or three other pedals with a regular power supply and a daisy chain connector and has had no issues with it. If it's within the current rating of your current (no pun) power supply then go for it.

There's loads of stuff on t'interwebs about how to set one up, but they're dead easy (although will require a ReverbNation or RootMusic account setting up - worth having anyway). They seem to have a pretty similar set of features, but basically allow you to create a page that has your music, pics, vids, gig dates etc in a decent layout and easy to update. *Edit for spelling fail!* -
I've got an old true bypass pedal that looks very much like this - any gurus know the best way to go about adding a blend knob to it? Would love to get my mix on between the clean sound and the pure filth!!

There's a big problem here with the perception of the sound tech's job. At the four bands on a bill, cram them in band night round your local gigging establishment that most of us in unsigned originals bands are frequenting, the sound guy basically has to run the whole show. His job is not to make your band sound like the way you sound in your practice room/garage/wildest dreams - he has to turn round 4 (or more!) bands in an extremely tight schedule, get them on and off the stage (with all their equipment) and make all of them sound decent, dealing with any changes and technical hitches on the fly. In reality, the luxury of taking the time to get 'your' sound for you just doesn't exist. I did a tour a few years ago and was lucky enough to have a sound guy I know (who now runs FOH for The Script and Brand New) come out with us. He DI'd my Stingray, straight out of the bass, every night - I had no reason to argue because he knew what he was doing, and what he had to achieve in the limited time available. Sometimes you can get the nice extras of mics and multiple channels (and he did them for the bigger shows) but it's all about compromise. And everything Bankai said. -
