1. Nooooooooooooo! Pleased you got a sale mate, I've been waiting ages for one of these. So long I emailed Alex yesterday.
2.
Pray do tell what they might be?
That they're addictive, they control your lives and that they're owned by people you should stay well away from. That's what I've heard about growlers from my dad anyway.
3. I wouls also like it, just in case Mark doesn't work out. :-)
4. Another vote for just using your stage rig, assuming you have one.
5. I use a 2x12" and 1x12", which is kind of the same as what you've got just with bigger drivers. Yeah so one speaker gets twice as much power as the others, so what? Turn it down if the top one starts to complain and you'll be fine.
6. Gigs without soundmen, without GOOD soundmen, without monitors all exist. And I always use a post-eq DI. My amp is kinda important.
7. I do love those basses, when I couldn't find the right Ray 4 I almost went Growler. As it is, I'm pleased I stayed away, I heard bad things about them.
8.
It's in the title: £700 ono
D'oh! It was the 'if you win it' bit that threw me.
9. IME they're the most consistent and one of the best mass-produced basses on the market. Aside- That 'weak g' problem definitely exists. I thought it was a myth until I started looking for a 4 not so long ago and played maybe 20-30 in a short time. Just raise the G side of the pickup and push the pole pieces down and it's gone though.
10. Love it, but you have to post a price.
11. My first proper amp too, great little combos. . . . . . .
12. Hello guys, I've always used Rotosound flats or La Bella rounds on my Fender P but recently decided to try Status strings, I bought a 40-100, long scale set of the flats. When fitted to my P the A, D and G strings all sounded great but the E was muted and totally dead. I called Status just assuming it was bum string and they sent me a new one but this one is the same. What's gone on here? The E just sounds tubby and has no volume whatsoever and I refuse to believe they've sent me two defective ones in a row. One thought I had was that the string proper is around the string winder, as in we're past the winding bit and onto the full-thickness part of the string, is this what's causing it? Should I have bought medium-scale strings? It's a full-size precision, just a standard MIA one and I've always bought long-scale strings in the past. Status do say that long-scale is 34" on their website. Thanks in advance, Jack
13. You're getting the 2 preamp channels (clean and dirty) confused with the fact that you have two poweramps. Plug each cab into a poweramp and then worry about your preamp, you'll have none of the issues you're worrying about.
14. +1 for the Di Marzio Will Power, after much research it's the one I went for and I'm pleased I did.
15. If you really want the 'straight to power amp' sound you still need to boost the level somewhere. Lots of studio preamps really are flat, and often the compressors and eqs can be bypassed totally. Look at something like a Presonus Eureka or (my favorite DI ever) the Grace Designs m101 or the m103 if you still want the full-featured pre.
16. So the barefaced stuff handles the older school sound alright then? I just feel that some cabs struggle to sound, I dunno, less capable? I quite enjoy the strained sound. Not speaker breakup but sort of the feeling that they're being pushed to their limits, maybe I'm making it up I dunno. I'd love to have a Midget/Compact setup.
17. Make me an offer on mine, guyl.
18. I'll certainly get to a local shop and aim to try the Ampeg stuff. Thanks for the offer Prime, but I'm certainly hoping for 2 smaller cabs rather than one big one. If I have to go the big cab route it's either a NV610 or Barefaced 69er. Thumperbob, I had certainly thought about going with an external pre to use with my current rig, I quite like the ability to be able to 'de-vintage' at the flick of a switch and I do still like the sound and form factor of my GK rig. I had thought about the Darkglass B7K to replace my MXR M80 as lots and lots of my gigs are amp shares where I plug into somebody else's rig and because I practice with the preamp into a mixer and then headphones. Oooooh so many choices. Speaking of Line 6, their heads never a get a mention on here, rubbish or worth considering?
19. They could sound like liquid Jesus and TC would still be off the list because of their marketing. Oooooooh, an OTB, now there's a trick I've missed. Also, how are we getting on with the Mesa Walkabout stuff now that it's a few years old?

At least you'll be able to re-sell a 'name' brand for more money if you don't like it.
21. You'll get money for a standard bass and you'll get the money from the parts too. Most people think any upgrades are downgrades and your idea of a upgrade may not suit anyone else's taste. Nothing against you, but standard is always the way to sell. FWIW, My P recently got a new lease of life with a new wiring job, orange drop capacitor (of questionable benefit but I was in there anyway and it was cheap!) and a DiMarzio Will Power pickup. Best precision I've ever played, and now it sounds like it should.
22. Hey folks, I'm currently running and loving a GK rig consisting of a 1001RB-II head, neo 1x12 and a neo 2x12. But I can't help thinking I want something a bit more traditional sounding, maybe with a hint of overdrive present in the sound naturally. I'm actually leaning towards a pre/power setup (which is something I've been wanting to try for a while) or I'm really interested in the new Ashdown heads. Does anyone have any ideas what would be nice here? I'm all for smaller heads but when compared to a cab even big heads still seem small to me so I'm not really too fussed here. The biggie, cabs. I just don't know what to do at all here. All of the small neo cabs seem geared towards a really deep, full modern tone and that's totally great but just not what I'm shooting for. I know that sometimes there's 'no replacement for displacement' but I really can't find anything smaller than a Bergie NV610 that fits what I'm looking for tonally and that seems totally absurd. With the amount of love that SVTs still get even though they've been obsolete for 20 years it boggles my mind that no one makes a cabinet with a similar tone profile but in a smaller package. I cant even find a pair of small, sealed, 2x10s that sound anywhere close. Does anyone have any advice here either? Alex, I want a 69er cut into two pieces!
23. Because it's made with newer technology and because people are willing to pay for the smallness premium. Either would be fine, I have a 1001RB-II and love it but if I were to do it all again I'd probably go small and digital.
24. Nope. 10dB (1B ) is twice as loud, it's a logarithmic scale. You can double the power to get 3dB, and you'll need ten times the power to get an extra 10dB. Most cabs are specced at around a 100dB, I cant think that one cab will really be twice as loud as another unless you're comparing ridiculous things like a massive Fitzmaurice horn against a 6" practice cabinet. Not that it matters, most cabinet specs are outright lies and the ones that aren't are usually meaningless. EG most bass cabinets are specified for sensitivity at 1kHz, I could make a cabinet that does 100dB at 1kHz with a bandsaw and some plywood right now, but you wouldn't want to use it for bass. Use your ears, or at worts the advice of people that have ears you trust, specs are a waste of time IME. People like Alex and Bill rely on the fact that they're cabinets are simply very good and translate that fact into numbers and specs that people like. They don't lie or stretch the truth because they don't have to. Many manufacturers do, and I'm sure all would want you to use your head rather than buy anything based on specs.
25. If you can find a little bit more money there's the Ibanez K5, specifically mine which will be on the marketplace in a couple of weeks . . . .
