  1. I can confirm that an FR800 is more than any sane person would ever need. That's why I have 2.
  2. I don't have an Orchid, although the sound company that provides a biker rally we do every year has a couple and so I've used what I've just learned is their classic box several times. I liked it, but it was always a biker rally so I'm sure I couldn't have told the difference between a Behringer and a Neve. That review is 6 years old, I'd be intresting to see if there was anything new that betters the orchids? For instance I have a Triton Big Amp, but had I known Orchid did their 'micro' I would have got that for half the price! The Triton is fine, but I'm sure the Orchid would have been too...
  3. I don't know much about this session in particular but I can imagine many engineers being reluctant to work with something home made.
  4. Then IME I'm confident that one of the "high end" 1×12" cabs being talked about here will be loud enough.
  5. Define 'louder'. I have what's effectively a BB2 and it's up there with the best 1x12" cabs on the market as are the other choices you mention. I often think that one would not be loud enough for me without PA support. If you always have PA support it will fill any stage, but there's limits to what one small cab can do if it's got to carry the room on a loud gig.
  6. Good choice. That should be more than loud enough if the pa is adequate.
  7. It's 140W through a 10”, so it's not quiet by any means but it wouldn't come close to covering the room for me. It's not obvious in the pic (I moved it around for the photo) but the DI is going to the mixer and the FOH and the monitor is actually fed by a bass-only aux. I've got it pointing right at my head and it's loud enough for stage volume.
  8. £160 by my reckoning. That's not bad.
  9. Black drywipe marker. Just colour it in.
  10. I had one. Decent amp but it's rated at 4R and the internal speakers are only 8 so it's only around150-200W with just the internal speakers. A matching Laney 4x10" to sit underneath it wold probably make it a decent gigging rig.
  11. Small board sold, prices reduced on the remainder. Please, tempt me with trade options....
  12. Yeah, 300W into a 15" or 2x10" at a minimum really. If you can handle the weight, something like a GK 2x10" combo would be great, I've seen used ones for less than £250. You can point it at your face and the GK DI outputs to feed FOH are superb. Otherwise, there's the new TC Electronic combos, the Mesa Boogie Scout (if you're a gentleman of means), an old Ashdown MAG combo (if you're not!) and plenty more to pick from.

    Line 6 Helix.

Is there a place where we can share presets at all? Either a central one or a basschat-specific place?
  14. I have the same desk. My setup is a little different because I use a modeller but I run 'traditional' bass through it all the time so I'm fairly up to speed. As a very general procedure/starting point I start with HPF at 40Hz, LPF at 5KHz and the 'bass' preset on the channel compressor. If I'm the full-time soundman (as often happens when we have support bands or provide the PA for a multi-band backline) then I'll tweak and tweak and often get it to sound better than that. If it's for me and I cant mess with whilst I'm playing, that's normally how it stays all night and it sounds fine. I have an effects preset set in case my helix goes down that has a low mid boost, a high mid cut and most importantly one of the guitar amp effects inserts set to provide some grit and colour. I'm not one for a 'straight in' bass sound and those modelled effects (particularly the guitar amp sim and the valve preamp) can really add some character. Maybe try one of those if you miss the tube colour from your amp.
  15. Well combos usually beat stacks in terms of convenience and if the GK is loud enough then stick with it. It's a classic and it sounds amazing.
  16. This. I've had an 'S' combo and two of the 'E' heads. They were the only/best choice for a high quality, tiny, light, gigging amp but now there's dozens. I'd have a GK MB200 with a GSS 1x12" (new £580 total) but you cold have the TE Elf and the Barefaced 1x10" (~£550 ish?). Or this, or that, or the other. There are many rigs for <£800 that are lighter and louder these days.
  17. That's unfair. They might have put those speakers in that box before and known the outcome.
  18. Damn! Hey, if the lucky buyer doesn't get on with it (yeah, right) then please PM me before putting up a FS thread. :-)
  19. Just checked the Thomann page, can't believe that those were D'Addario. They're the brand I use on my main basses, I love their strings. I suppose they could be made especially for Thomann or whatever but they felt really different to the strings I usually use and they felt 'cheap'. I wonder if that was psychosomatic and just my internal bias? FWIW I knew that the pickups were Roswell before buying, it seems there's little consensus with people preferring one pup over the other.
  20. I've got both in my proper set, I couldn't find the right one anywhere. Will double-double try this one, good spot! Not mine. Nor did it come with the nice flats or the Wilkinson pickups! I like that bass a lot and they're still a bargain but not quite the bargain they once were.
  21. Guys, girls, The new Jameson flats on my PB-50 are winning the battle against the neck. I went to adjust the truss rod last night but it didn't seem as though any of my allen keys fit. Certainly the one I normally use (in my Fender CS bass setup kit) didn't seem like it fit. Can anyone confirm the size for me please? Is there a knack to this? My Fender is easy enough to do and my EBMMs have the wheels, this is anew one for me... Thanks! Jack
  22. Video the failure with your phone?
  23. I'm not likely to forget you twice. Well, actually... Thanks for the recommendations all, I hadn't thought about just taking the screws somewhere. Seems blinkin' obvious when I have to type it out! Jack
  24. Hi all. I've been trying to source some replacement screws for my gator racks, but it seems they're not a standard size. The normal m6 rack screws that I have for my other case didn't fit. The size is 10/32 x 3/4" according to the internet, does anyone have a good source for these in the UK? Ideally with washers? It's £30 for a Gator branded set. Thanks Jack
