VERY informative and interesting video Phil, thanks. I've been looking for some sort of project for a while now, something like this may be just the ticket.

I bought some strings from Jose and it all went brilliantly, I'd have no qualms about doing any business again!
-
For the price? Pretty much unbeatable. There's one in my bag in case my helix goes down. That said, I don't think a bdi would hold a candle to any of the top flight amps being discussed here as a permanent tone solution.

I'd love to try one of these. Like many of us now I'm largely ampless, but there's still the need for a mid size combo for some situations. It's this or the rumble methinks.

NAD - and bit of a clean up diary - Trace AH600SMX
Jack replied to ianrendall's topic in Amps and Cabs
That's a fantastic amp, but for the love of whatever deity you believe in, tape off those XLR speaker outputs before you kill a soundman. -
Another unavoidable truth is that there are some bargains to be had. I can't stress enough how much the Alto stuff, especially the TS range, punch well above their weight. We got our two 1x15 tops and two 1x18 subs for £1000 all in second hand and they're brilliant. That's the band system, complemented by my Behringer XR18 it's the easiest PA system ever. I even enjoyed the Alto stuff so much I bought myself a pair of TX10 (the cheaper range) just for me. Whatever specific models you decide on, digital mixer and powered speakers are certainly the way to go.

As far as I know the BB2 with the crossover at its highest is pretty much the super compact. They should pair alright, is what I'm saying. Of course, a pair of BB2s would be even better. It's always best to match.

No more nails and neodymium bar magnets?

How loud? Kustom PA50?
-
No sorry I meant "as much as it'll take without clipping" .
-
Nah. For signal/noise reasons I'd hit the amp with as much juice from the behringer as it'll take. No sense making up the gain later on when you've got so much on tap to start with.
-
The GSS Baby Sumo? 600W or 1000W and around £400. I've had a few bits of Didier's stuff and it's all brilliant.
-
That control is what input voltage the amp would need to hit full volume. Well, maximum gain.... All other things equal 0.7V should be louder and probably a better match to the instrument outputs on the flyrig.

I've had great results with both the Behringer Mic100 (although it needs 12V AC) and the Lehle Sunday Driver XLR. Effects return after the modelling is what you want surely?
-
I had exactly the same problem, you can't tell until it's at band levels. Partly due to the mix, partly due to our old friends Fletcher and Munson. But surely that's the same with any rig? I sold mine, too difficult to adjust on the fly and too focused on exactly copying amps. I find the Helix suits me better on those fronts. YMMV.

Great looking rig!

Shameless plug, but there's one for sale in the classifieds.

I've got one each of the esr mixer cases for sale. How big is the floor helix? I can't find the page on my phone at work, I'll have a measure tonight.

The worry over phantom power alone would be enough to make me want to squeeze one in somewhere. I guess if there's no room though that's that. What's your on stage monitoring? Will the unbalanced 1/4" drive that to leave your xlrs free? Edit: just seen its the RCF cab. Might as well try it with the 1/4", won't cost you anything but time to try.
-
Barring some crazy routing to do with the panning left and right, the xlrs are linked together as are the 1/4". I've been using the xlr (line level, volume control) to the cabs and the 1/4" (mic level, no volume control) to a Radial SB2 and then to the pa. Like you, I found that I needed two distinct XLR sends (one for me, one for foh) and the stereo pair wasn't giving me that. As an aside, if it's not our board or our soundman (ok, the drummer's dad) I would be worried that there's phantom power being sent from foh to the helix, which the internal xlrs apparently don't cope well with. DI box solved both problems and I already had it so it was 'free'.

Just to chip in, some preamps have problems driving some poweramps to full volume as the outputs can be too low. In that case, preamps like the Behringer MIC100 and others can be very useful to provide a clean(ish) boost to properly drive the power amp. In other words, don't get too hung up on it. :-)
