I absolutely agree with what Bill is saying but in most cases this solution is unsuitable for small to mid size bands. Most bands would have a sub/sat arrangement as this is the easiest and most sensible solution for this type of set up. I guess Jesse it depends on what you call a big room.....
Well, on Sunday night the room was the size of an aircraft hanger! Maybe that's a slight exaduration, but certainly there was room for about 4 full sized tennis courts plus seating! There were 200 at the wedding, but they seemed quite lost in a room that size. Every few weeks we get a big room like that. Rarely do they have enough people at the wedding to justify the size of the room! How do you find the K-array system? I've heard one (the 4k one) in a shop over here, (Ireland) but I'd love to actually get a demo for a while! Sounded great in the shop.
The choice is simple: do you want to look good or sound good? Where subwoofer placement is concerned more often than not it's a distinct choice between the two. No. Neither should they be away from walls, neither should they be pointed at the audience. This is admittedly all counter-intuitive, but the field of acoustics is very much counter-intuitive. Proper versus improper sub placement can account for as much as a 24dB difference in output. That's the equivalent of 10 watts versus 2000 watts.
That is a total head melter.... So in most cases the audience may not even see the subs at all? They could be behind the stage, or off to the side, where ever there is a wall? I'll try it some day when we have extra time for setting up our equipment. They are front ported subs. Should the ports be facing the wall? Thanks Bill you obviously know a lot about this stuff, so I'm taking it all on board! I'll show this thread to my band mates... otherwise they'd never believe me!

Thanks for answering. I have heard several times that it's better to place the subs together, but from an asthetic and stability point of view, putting the subs either side of the stage with the mid/high speakers on-top makes much more sense.... We often play to boozed up crowds, and manys the time I've been glad that our speakers are very steadily held by the subs. i.e. some drunk eejit bashing into a normal speaker stand usually has very serious results! Wouldn't putting the subs to one side of the stage be strange from a sound point of view? If it's a very wide stage, people on one side of the dance floor are getting tons of bass, while on the other side it's taking the bass a bit longer to arrive and when it does it's not as loud? Just to confirm.... I'm not clipping the amp running the tweeters, so I know that I won't damage the tops. It's just the subs that are getting clipped a bit. The amp isn't getting too hot at all, just warm, so I don't think I'm running it into the ground or anything... I was reading about the subs we have, here's what it says....
The cabinet is equipped with an electronic circuit called VOICE COIL TRACKING PROTECTION. This circuit senses the terminal voltage of the transducer and simulates the thermal behaviour of the woofer´s voice coil. In case of potential thermal overload the power applied to the speaker is reduced to a safe level. Extremely powerful amps can be used in order to have maximum dynamic range without the danger of thermal overload in non-controlled situations. The VOICE COIL TRACKING PROTECTION exhibits “soft” switching characteristics, so no annoying clicks or pops are audible
Which gives me some peace of mind...... The subs are rated at 1600 watts peak, and I know the power amp is only feeding them 500 watts each.... although as far as I know I can still damage them even with 500 watts. I can't see anything about what level the clip lights are set to come on at... but maybe I'm missing something? Here's the spec page: http://www.dynacord.de/en/products/7/1/1/5_sub115.html Somebody told me that dynacord overengineer everything, so I can be pretty sure that unless I'm clipping the hell out of it, it's safe enough. Still though, it goes against my insticnts to see a red light coming on on every kick drum hit! Thanks guys for going to the bother of helping out with this. I'm not very technical when it comes to this kind of thing so I really appreciate your input. Jesse
Generally clipping the amp is bad. You shouldn't be TOO damaging running it like that but it may wear the system out over time. If you've got a graphic eq over the system try pulling out some of the lowest frequencies (you can probably roll off everything below 31.5 at least) as those speakers wont reproduce them to a great degree anyway. This way you are only sending frequencies that your speakers can actually reproduce, thus giving you more headroom.
Thanks. I actually already have an eq on my master channel for the DJing (a software EQ) so I've taken out almost everything below 40hz but it's still clipping. Clipping the amp is worse for the speaker than the amp I've read, but is that true? It's not audible clipping at all. It sounds bloomin great when it's clipping, pumping out some very sweet balanced low end.

Hey folks, I'm looking for opinions about our P.A. setup. Here's what we have at the moment.... http://www.dynacord.de/en/products/7/1/1/7_powersub315.html Also we have the passive sister of this sub, which means each sub is getting 500 watts. (all powered from the 2K dynacord amp in the DLITE 115 sub) My first question is: Is it ok to clip this amp? I find that our set-up is loud enough most of the time, but in the big rooms, to get the volume I want I need to clip the amp. It's only the sub that is clipping, not the tops. And it's only clipping on the kick drum notes. If it's safe enough to clip this amp a bit, then I don't need to beef up the P.A. Wadda you reckon? Does anyone have any experience with DYNACORD amps like this? Jesse
You are welcome and thanks for your kind words. Nice to knwo it's working. Just PM me if you need anything specific or an objective view on your design etc...
Si, I'm so sad I never got to thank you in person. You'll be missed terribly. Jesse

My thoughts are with his friends and family. I used to tell people that I'd met this guy on-line who was helping with my web-site, and I couldn't believe the amount of effort he put into it for no pay or obvious gain... he genuinely just wanted to help out a total stranger. Pages of emails for weeks and weeks, thousands of pounds worth of work he did for nothing. When I tried to get him a token gift at the end of it all, he was having none of it! We kept in touch, and most recently I bought a beautiful Jap Precision from him. I'll miss his emails. I'd always hoped that I'd get to meet him to thank him in person for being such a cool guy. I really felt like I knew him. One last time..... thank you so much Si for everything. Your a legend. Jesse
PA isn't about for looks. I think both at one side of the room is fairly happy, bass isn't very directional in the absence of higher frequencies. You can get so much more choice in power amps with 2u. If that is ok, then lightness is pretty much proportional to cost, loads of power it pretty cheap.
I'll try putting both to one side of the stage soon, to see how much of a difference it makes. Thanks for all the advice so far!
Some decent stands could sort that out. Honest - subs should be placed together. And, proper placement using walls and corners etc for the subs can give you another 3 or 6 dB for no extra power input. It's worth reading up on the theory of this stuff - it can help in practice and avoid the need to chuck power at a problem.
I know your right.... and it's something I must try. Thing is, where the hell do you put the subs?? Cant put them in the middle of the stage... we're often just standing on the floor. That'd just look plain weird. Could I put them both to one side of the stage? Wouldn't that just make one side of the room very bass heavy? The other reason we bought a second sub in the first place (we used to just have one) was so that the speaker is very securely planted.... we get a lot of drunk people bashing into stuff, so it's nice to know that they cant knock our speakers over! I'm looking into the option of adding a 2nd power amp to run sub number 2. Needs to be lightweight, and preferably 1 rack unit.
Man up the PA. What you have should be fine for the stage and if you are on big stages, you don't have to set-up that far apart. But I agree, your PA is underpowered to be doing the job it is supposed to do, IMV
Yeah I think we should really have a 4 k rig. For all you p.a nerds out there, it's a dynacord dlite115 system with a matching sub. I've been told not to clip the amp, so I don't. Unfortunately, in big rooms, whenever I get the kick/bass where I want them, it's invariably clipping the amp a bit. Not a lot, but even though dynacord stuff is built like a tank, I don't want to fry the amp.
Why not chop in one of the cabs for a GS212? That way you'll still have the sound you like, but a bit of extra heft for those bigger gigs?
A gs212.... Hadn't thought of that.... Wouldn't have to buy a new amp then! (assuming it's an 8 ohm cab?) Good idea. Yep we have subs, but they have to go left and right of the stage, cos the tops sit on them for stability. Thanks for all the advice so far.
It sounds wonderful, but PJB stuff isn't the loudest unless you add cabs. I think the Six Pack only puts out 190-odd watts into the combo so you'd really need to add the right impedance cab to make the most of the M500 head that's in it. That, of course, makes having such a heavy combo in the first place a bit redundant, at least it does to me! I'd suggest you look at the manual and see what the cab configurations and power handling do, and whether you can get the right setup for you. Cheers Gareth
Ok thanks Gareth. Sounds nice but way too heavy for the volume. Maybe when I get a few roadies, I can justify it then!

Hey folks, Looking for some ideas about where to go from here. I'm in a wedding band playing 2 - 3 times every week. The venues vary wildly from really tiny, to huge hotel function rooms with 500 guests. We have a decent 2k Dynacord P.A, but in the larger rooms it can be pushed quite hard, so I like to get most of my volume from my amp, as I feel it does a better job of reproducing the tone I am looking for. At the moment I have a LM2, and 2 x GS112 cabs, loaded with deltalight 2 speakers. I am pretty happy with this set up in most situations, but sometimes I find it doesn't pust quite enough air.... especially in the big rooms. Sometimes, in bigger rooms, I split the cabs, so that I have one cab for monitoring myself, and 1 cab close to the dancefloor. Some of the stages are far from the dancefloor, so I find my amp so far away from the action, that it almost feels as if there is a time-lag by the time the sound travels from my speakers to the action. In this situation I would usually put a touch of myself through the P.A. too. I totally LOVE the light weight of the cabs, and the tiny lightweight markbass amp which I can fit into a suitcase with all my cables and bits and bobs. So.... I'd kind of like to keep thing portable, but flexible too.... but push more air!!!! I want my cake and to eat it. One option I've been thinking about is to buy another GS112, so I have the option of a 3 high stack, which should be quite a bit louder than just two of the little buggers. Obviously, I know my LM2 wont handle the lower impedance. What are my options if I want to go this route? I know I'd need to buy a new head, but are there any small heads that can do this? Another option would be just to get a bigger cab... but then I'd loose some of my portability. It would have to be quite light, sound amazing, have a reasonably small footprint, and ideally be quite tall... I like to get the speakers up past my knees (I'm a tall guy!) I've owned a couple of Markbass 102HF cabs, which were good, but I prefer the sound of the aggies. I think I prefer 12s. The TC stuff looks interesting.... any experience with their 2 x 12 cabs stacked up? I've been looking at a couple of heavier options, but after the terrible access to the venue last night, I know a heavy cab or amp would break my heart. As much as I love the idea the DB750 or mesa boogie buster I've been looking at.... I think I'm gunna have to keep it lightweight. Any ideas? Eh? Thanks! Jesse
Maybe have a word with the guy selling this one in Ireland? It seems like a great deal if that's what you're looking for. I am certianly loving my new M300 and 6B combination, which is a similar setup but in separates.
Thanks. Are you finding it loud enough for your needs? How big of a gig would you say it could comfortably manage?
Hey folks, I'm looking at a PJ 6pack as a possible change from my current LM2 / aguilar gigging rig.... Anyone have any experience of em? Can't see any for sale anywhere, so very hard to know what they're worth second hand. Will it live happily on top of a GS112? It looks to be a heavy wee beasty... does the tone justify the weight? Thanks!
Whoops! This is in the wrong place... sorry! Could someone move it?
I've had a bunch of vintage (50's & 60's) Dynacord stuff ... absolutely wonderful and completely bullet-proof. I've found this site very helpful in the past: http://www.el-me-se.de/dynacord.html
Apparently the guy says it was 1800 sterling in the 80s when it came out!!!!! Thats probably the equivilant to at least 5k nowadays... so it might be a tall tale. I might be able to give it a listen soon, but yeah I think he's looking for a bit too much for it, even if it is quality.

Hey people, I'm looking at this with a view to buying as a backup amp.... Anyone ever seen one of these before? If so, are they any good? I can find NOTHING about them on the net.... The guy is looking for €400. I know dynacord make very good stuff, so I'm kinda interested. Thanks! Jesse

Very strong smell from the inside of the amp.... The amp actually used to be my dads, so I remember as a kid being at exactly the right height to see straight into it's guts. And thus began my fascination with amplifiers!
