1. Looks cool Personally I'd be really nervous about leaving anything valuable in my garage though!
2. Maybe its just me, but I don't really give a toss about what the other guys play, so long as it makes the band sound good. If someone wants to double "my" line then if it sounds cool, go ahead. If it sounds crap, then we have issues, but I don't need a moment of personal glory to enjoy a gig.
3.
there were more people in the other bands in the audience then the audience itself.
You say that like its unusual
4. I've seen a two-piece rock band do this with a guitar into a Marshall half stack and bass combo. Sounded immense. Not sure it would work with a bass though.
5. Personally, I think 6 strings are rubbish but if I wanted one, I'd get one. Lifes too short to worry about other people. So long as your playing suits the band you're playing in then its none of your bandmates business what the instrument you're playing is.
6. I would imagine that you'd need really strong magnets to hold the weight of your pedals. And really strong magnets in close proximity to expensive electronic equipment is a pretty bad idea.
7. Hi guys Took delivery of a deliciously lovely Yamaha bass yesterday---thanks Lucatus---but I'm just wondering if the case I have is snug enough (picture below). It fits pretty nicely around the neck, but there's a little bit of wiggle room around the upper/lower horn. I guess I'm slightly worried that the whole thing will slide up (towards the headstock) and end up putting too much pressure on the headstock...am I worrying over nothing? I guess there's less wiggle room than one of those cases where the inside isn't shaped, right?
8. ...For when the inevitable forum trading begins!
9. Bought a Yamaha TRB1005 from Pablo (lucatus). Excellent communication, friendly guy to deal with, posted the bass exactly when he said he would and packed it well. Couldn't have asked for much more from a seller really! Thanks
10. Hi guys I just acquired a new bass and I want to raise the action on it a bit---I play quite hard and I'm getting string buzz and quite a lot of extra string noise. I think raising the strings a little will help. The question is, how do I know whether or not to adjust the saddle height or the truss rod (or both?)? Thanks
11. Expensive cables. Get yourself a good quality shielded cable and be done with it. So long as it doesn't fall apart and doesn't pick up any noise---thats all you need. Effects pedals. The occasional bit of dirt or filtering is cool but lets be honest, 90% of effects sound sh*t on bass. There, I said it. Valve amps. Yes, (some) valve amps sound like the dogs' danglies but there is a mistaken belief amongst musicians that valves = better. No, valves = different. So valve amps are overrated in the sense that they are not inherently better than any other kind of amp.
12. This might be old news but I see that Guitar Center (large American chain) are now shipping to the UK. Their website claims to also be able to work out your duty and VAT costs too.
13.
I plugged it in in the shop but you can't really go turning it up that much in a shop
Sorry to hear you're disappointed with your new bass but if you're serious about buying then say so and ask to turn it up. If the shop don't let you then take your custom elsewhere!
14. This thread is hilarious. Turning up with a Jazz or a Precision apparently means you don't care what you sound like Turning up with fancy gear means you aren't a real musician
15.
I think a lot of people that go to gigs etc tend to see with their eyes.
I'd be worried if they didn't
16. Slowly! ...serious answer: Started off as a guitarist. Bought a bass for messing about with and learned entirely by ear/tab/youtube. Joined a band as I "had a bass". Realised I liked playing bass more than guitar. Started to practice more. Just started lessons.
17.
I got these stickers and used a hole punch to make circles. They stick quite well and only one has come off so far.
They look ideal. Think I'll give them a try. Thanks for the tip! Sam
18. Holy crap thats beautiful. I've always wanted a Ricki 12 but discovered recently that the string spacing is just too narrow for a hamfisted muppet like me to play Good luck with the sale.
19.
I would be happy to start an excell spreadsheet if it can be hosted somewhere?
You could host it via the forum software. Just "attach" it to a post. The file size limit is 20Mb---a simple excel sheet won't get near that for a *long* time.
20. I was looking at Ibanez recently (until I decided the necks were actually *too* thin, even for my tiny stubby fingers ). I'd pretty much decided that it made a lot more sense to buy a second hand top-of-the-range one than a brand new "lower range" one---they don't seem to keep their value at all. You should be able to get yourself a brilliant bass for a steal if you go second hand
21. Hey I sometimes encounter what I think is a fairly common problem---I can't see my fret markers on the side of the neck on dark stages. I know you can get LEDs and so on, but thats more effort/cash than I'm willing to invest just now. Instead, I was thinking of getting some glow in the dark stickers. I was hoping I could find some small, circular ones so they wouldn't be very obtrusive. Has anyone tried this?
22. For the last two years my only bass has been a Vintage (brand, not the age) jazz. It's been gigged dozens of times and I recorded my bands EP using it. I've regularly had compliments on how good it sounds!
23. I think the easiest way to do this will be some kind of midi switching.
24.
Further discussion of these and other perceptual aspects of pitch may be found in Chapter 7 of Rossing, The Science of Sound, 2nd. Ed.
I've met Tom Rossing a couple of times. Nice guy. So there!
25.
Personally, even though its a flight case, I would put a couple of layers of bubble wrap around it at least. It would be a real shame if it turned up with a huge scratch on it, even if it didn't affect the function at all. The couriers will throw this around far more than a roady would. Also depends on the flight case of course. There are flight cases and 'flight cases'.
^^^this. If it *can* be thrown around, then it probably *will* be thrown around. Shipping internationally isn't really much different to shipping to someone in the same country. The only difference is that choosing a courier is harder. Wrap it well, send it tracked and insured, and get your payment in advance.
