Back when i was playing in my originals band at some toilet circuit in Glasgow I snapped the E string on my bass on the first note of the first number (no, me neither - I've never snapped a string before or since). The song was a sub-three-minute punk rock effort. I spent most of it desperately trying to work out how to play the riff in a different position. As the song ended, and the rest of the band were looking at me going "what the flip happened there then?" some kind soul from one of the other bands appeared in front of the stage with his bass in hand and just handed it to me. Being a sensible person, I absolutely babied that man's instrument and remain eternally grateful to him cos he rescued the gig. Yeah, I could have had a spare - but in 25+ years of gigging on various instruments thats literally the only time I'd have needed to use it. If I was playing weddings or proper pro gigs, I'd carry one, but I'm not so I don't.

Ricky and Precision volume & tone operation

Could be, could just be reverse pots. Would be easy enough to have bought the wrong ones by accident, and just decided to use them anyway. -

Wow. Want. -
Nothing, really. People can do whatever they like with their own possessions, I just find the resulting distortion of the market a bit frustrating. The asking prices on reverb are becoming mental---I was looking at Boss OC-5 pedals the other week. They're £150 posted brand new, or you could buy one of the two second hand ones listed on reverb for £140 plus postage. 🙈🙉🙊

One thing which magnifies the problem in my eyes is the way Reverb and eBay work. You only pay fees when you sell, and items can sit there forever, so there's literally zero cost to listing things at stupid prices and chancing your arm. Its a stupid policy that encourages chancers IMO.

Mid-range 35"+ scale 5 strings — what's out there?

Yamaha TRB would be my first look. -
Chase Tone Secret Preamp. Boxed, with some dual lock on the bottom. Please note - I bought this direct from Chase Tone as a "factory second" with a cosmetic defect. I absolutely cannot see why. Some of the text is maybe a tiny bit fuzzy? Honestly, I can't tell. £110 posted FYI never used it on bass, only on guitar - its bloody great for that, but can't vouch for the bass performance!! Only selling because I built myself a clone.

***sold*** Another flight of fancy from myself that needs to go having impulse bought something else! Picked up this rather nice shortscale G&L from reverb the other week. Its a great thing, the MFD pickup is great, solid bridge, lovely comfy neck, no messing around controls. Spec here: https://glguitars.com/product/tribute-series-fallout-shortscale-bass/ A previous owner has added a thumbrest in what seems a slightly odd place to me but it doesn't get in the way and would be easy enough to remove. I still have the box this was posted in so I can probably ship it (£30) but I'd much prefer collection from Fife (Burntisland) or I can meet in Haymarket, Edinburgh during the week (I'm a commuter). Any questions please ask. I'm not really looking for trades (given said impulse purchase) but I could perhaps be tempted by a Bass VI of some kind or something "like" a Boss ME-50b.

So. I bought this new only a few months ago on something of a whim (mainly because its gorgeous). Then, I went and impulse bought a P bass, so as much as I like this something has to go... Wonderfully light and well balanced. Neck is quite chunky, but in a good way. Its a wonderful metallic green, including right up the back of the neck. Quite tricky to photograph (sorry for all the reflections). When it arrived - the strings were crap and so was the tone control. I have put Newtone rounds on it and also a Ki0gon VBT wiring loom, including a replacement barrel jack. The tone control is much better now. Here's the spec, etc: https://www.epiphone.com/en-US/Electric-Bass/EPIM96326/Wanderlust-Metallic-Green Collection from Fife (Burntisland) or I can meet you at Haymarket in Edinburgh during the week (I'm a commuter). Asking £280. £200 to a basschatter. Really not looking for trades although I could (perhaps, maybe) be tempted by some kind of Bass VI or budget fretless. £200 is a massive price drop but its just making me sad sat in the corner there so I'd like it to go to a better home. ***SOLD***

Much better than buying a cheapo bass!
-
Me too. I'm personally a bit baffled that people spend £100+ on leather ones when these are a fraction of the price and miles more comfortable / practical (for me at least)

I'll take one, thanks

I'm a contradiction, what can i say. Love BB, hate PJ.

That blue burst above is gorgeous. I'm inherently biased against PJ basses though. No idea why.

I'll take a photo of the straps when I get home. Remind me if i dont post! The TGI has a nice big front pocket which would fit sheet music well.

I bought a Precision from @Dov65 Absolutely great to deal with, delivered it to me, gave me a great price and a whole bunch of extra bits. Thanks!!

Very nice! Personally, I'd have done it slower. About 0.75x would be perfect I think. But then again I'd never have pulled this off in the first place, good effort. -

What strings are you guys using? I'm a big fan of the Dunlop Super Bright rounds in my 34" bass but they dont seem to do shortscale sets. -
Struggling to process this one. I don't really do the whole celebrity RIP thing, but Pulp were "my band". I play bass mostly because of Steve. My username is a reference to one of their songs, and one of his killer basslines. It feels really quite odd to be quite so upset at the death of a total stranger.

I like that a lot. Good work - shame about the fret sprout.

Thanks. They sound good but I'm not sure if that's not just because they're much higher output and therefore louder - a classic trick for making one thing sound better than another...
