Thanks - I'm not a ferrari man, rather more second hand 3-series BMW really; I think all the electronic differences in method are lost on me for now. Can you suggest a relatively cheap (sub £50) entry-level compressor that is worth a play with, that might be ok for gigging? I don't want to spend £140 - £200 on s'thing that I'm not convinced works for me but £40 - £ 50 is worth a punt to dip my toe in, so to say. Is it false economy if all the cheap comps are really pants? Are there any half decent cheap models worth a go? Do you have to spend over £100 to get something decent?
Marshall Ed-1. It would be good at twice the price.
The drummer is responsible for playing the drums. Everyone in the band is responsible for playing in time and in tune.
^^^ This. Because of the nature of the instrument the drummer is really important when it comes to keeping time but its not *only* his responsibility. I've seen too many bands who change tempo willy-nilly and try to blame the drummer when its actually all of them at fault and the drummer has been forced to "go with it".

Thinking in Jazz - the process dissected
uncle psychosis replied to Bilbo's topic in General Discussion
Because I sometimes struggle to even find the intervals of the next chord reliably if they're going by too fast, so I think the chances of me remembering all these bonus ideas are pretty slim.
Honestly, it just takes a bit of work and you start to get there. I don't think its really much more daunting than a beginner bassist asking "do you experienced guys really know all the notes to the 50 songs you do for your wedding setlist?" Bilbo---would you recommend the book as a good "general music interest" book or is it more for the serious jazzer? I used to be quite into jazz but whilst I'm still a listener I don't really ever play it anymore. -
If your main reason for wanting that bass is aesthetics then I'd just get a black P bass and stick a tort pickguard on it. I don't think that bass will have much appeal beyond Pete Wentz fans so if you ever want to sell it I think you might find it tricky.

*** SPAM/VIRUS EMAIL FROM DAVE HALL AMPS ***
uncle psychosis replied to REDLAWMAN's topic in General Discussion
I got an email from Dave last night warning/apologizing for it so I think he knows. -
To get over my disappointment...
uncle psychosis replied to Evil Undead's topic in General Discussion
I have no experience of their P basses but I used to own one of their Musicman copies which was great and I still own one of their Jazz copies which is absolutely brilliant. I've heard the odd complaint about their QC but I think if you get a good one then you're laughing. -
Maybe its just me but so long as I can hear what I'm playing I don't really care what it sounds like on stage. Just so long as its good out the front!

Nice. Really nice.

I think they look amazing. Would love to try one but I can't see myself ever spending that much on a bass...

I'm interested in doing the same (mainly because I want non-standard finish options...). *grabs chair*
Had a good listen, the drums and sax were great but the bass and keys sounded awful.
My thoughts too. That style of bass playing does nothing for me, sadly.
well, use your local luthier and don't buy anything from this bloke...
Exactly. I had a summer job working in a shop and people would come in, buy a pint of milk, and then say "how much? its 20p cheaper in the shop across the street..." ---but buy it anyway.

Led zeppelin and black sabbath just dont do anything for me !
uncle psychosis replied to gub's topic in General Discussion
There's no shame in not liking either LZ or BS. I've never really understood the attraction of the bands either. I'm a big fan of keeping things concise and to the point. IMO both have a tendency to ruin a perfectly good song by unnecessary muso noodling in the middle. My covers band have looked at doing something by Led Zep, and came to the conclusion that the only one worth bothering with without a lot of editing and re-arranging would be "Rock And Roll". Another band who's songs also really ought to be in our set - Deep Purple - suffer from a similar affliction.
Sums it up pretty nicely for me, Never understood the hero worshipping of LZ in particular. Some great moments, but sadly they were normally punctuated by 15 minutes of indeterminate noodling on either side. Not for me at all. -

Need a (hard) case for a 35" Yamaha TRB
uncle psychosis replied to uncle psychosis's topic in Accessories and Misc
The Hiscox STD-EBS case fits my 35" scale Reverend Rumblefish bass. If that's not big enough then I'm sure the STD-EBP will be suitable. Full details here.
Cool, thanks. I asked Yamaha and they said: "The Yamaha branded Hiscox STD-EBS case fits all Yamaha basses. Alternatively, to discover if a dedicated TRB case is available to purchase separately it would be necessary to contact the sales department. they can be contacted on 0844 811 1116" I am taking this to mean that an EBS will fit (presumably the yamaha branded ones are identical in form, fit, and function...) -

Hey folks I've posted this elsewhere but it makes sense to ask in here too: Annoyingly the stitching around the straps on my SKB hard foam case is beginning to fail. I like this case a lot, but this will be the second time I've experienced the same problem so I think I'll need to replace it with something else. I'm a big fan of Hiscox cases---anyone know if a 35" TRB1005 will fit? I read somewhere that the Hiscox cases are a bit tight in terms of length. The "EBP" model claims to be for longer basses but I'd rather know for sure before buying one... Any other recommendations for cases? I'd probably rather have something with shoulder straps and a couple of pockets but I'm more interested in weight/protection really. Thanks

Who Gigs An Old Bass? New Vs. Vintage?
uncle psychosis replied to spongebob's topic in General Discussion
Provided you look after them properly there's no reason an old bass would be more likely to fail than a new one. The main reason not to gig a vintage bass is the worry that it will get stolen or damaged. -
Well this was a session that they were just thrown together on. He'd worked with this drummer in the past on a number of occasions and on each occasion he'd be warned by all band members about his speeding up. He'd be drinking too which didn't help either. I reckon that on that night, my mate just wasn't taking any prisoners. He's usually a reasonably mild mannered bloke too. I'd be pissed off too if a repeatedly warned band member who liked a sherbert was taking absolutely no notice of the mistakes he was making despite repeatedly being told he was doing so. Apart from making himself look like a dickhead, he was making everyone else look stupid too, which, when you think about the time and effort they have all spent to practice on their instruments is just not on.
I have to be honest---the drummer might have been out of line but your mate also behaved like a grade A bell end too. Having a barney on-stage in front of a crowd is just a big no-no. Finish the set/gig and have words afterwards.

Want A 5 String Bass But Which?
uncle psychosis replied to Gordon Thudmaster May's topic in General Discussion
I went from a 4 string jazz to a 5 string yamaha trb without any real trouble and I've got teeny girly sized hands.
