... examples like Led Zeppelin where they've literally covered a song without giving appropriate credit/royalties and nothing's ever happened. ...
It's not true that nothing ever happened. For example, as well as the Wilie Dixon case, Jake Holmes sued over Dazed and Confused but was less successful and the family of Randy California of the Spirit are I think still in court over Stairway to Heaven, etc., etc.,
it seems drum beats as well, i remember all the hass over the drum break in the Winstons song "Amen Brother" when it was sampled then became an iconic break " The Aman Break" used by just about everyone, then zero G, stating it was theirs and you have to pay to use it, a very intresting insight into the corp big wigs stealing your stuff and you not having enough money to fight it, found it... watch this, its worth it and really opens your eyes.... https://www.youtube....h?v=5SaFTm2bcac
But what you are referring to here is 'sampling' which infringes upon the mechanical (now digital of course) sound recording done by someone else without paying for that use.
I think I remember that George Harrison got clobbered because My Sweet Lord had 3 notes that sounded a bit like He's so Fine by Phil Spector?
I think you'll maybe find that the three notes didn't 'sound a bit like' He's So Fine by The Chiffons - they were in fact the same three notes. The song that Harrison actually had in mind was Oh Happy Day by the Edwin Hawkins SIngers I believe after the court case Harrison bought the rights to He's So Fine.
... It raises an interesting point about whether this is merely unfortunate, and an almost subconscious act - based on listening to years of music, or conscious and deliberate. ...
Under the law, conscious or unconscious, intended or unintended is of no relevance.
Anyone ever sued Led Zeppelin? I'm sure I've seen a youtube vid of about a dozen songs they've ripped off!
Yes, Willie Dixon won out of court settlement.

I'm sorry you found my answer unhelpful - it was not meant to be so. Perhaps I didn't understand what you were asking. -
One songwriting method - indeed a very common method - isto know exactly which songs are your influences and so to avoid copying too closely.
Are there any rules to determine this kind of thing , like chord progression / factors for drum beats / melodys etc ? If it's purely subjective , then it's all based on jury's opinion (and maybe love of a particular artist) and the amount of money the defendant has , as surely you can't sue without being worried about losing ?
It's melody and lyrics that hold copyright. No copyright on chord sequence or bassline or anything else.

If you are changing gauge only, but manufacturer and model of string are staying the same, then a heavier gauge will commonly increase tension and lower compliance. If you are changing manufacturer and model of string then, whatever the gauge, there is no way of telling without knowing which strings - manufacturer and model - and knowing how that model is constructed.
whut?
Like instead of playing chord tones 1-3-5-7, play it 1-7-5-3 or whatever .. even add in 9th or 11th or 13th. E.g. root-fifth sounds different down to the fifth than up to the fifth and if you are changing key one might fall under the fingers easier than the other. So a key change can be an opportunity to play melodically different lines instead of just moving shapes around.
As has been mentioned there's a few things to consider: 1. String gauge. Thicker strings need less winds on most tuners. I always want to see two full wraps or more on the post... but I undo the string and clip if overlapping starts to happen.
I said above that I had six winds on my Lakland Decade E string but it's actually seven winds - with no overlap.

Or just move your and up or down the neck or just play it in a different position. And if you do play it in a different position, then just like a guitarist playing different inversions of the chords, you can change the feel by playing different inversions of the chord tones.
Capo. Job done.
... and before anyone moans about capos ... if you can use frets then you can use a capo.

A spanner at the front of the headstock and a screwdriver at the rear is common. -
... It won't be easy as I would think your to young to get what The Beatles were about.
What are your age limits, high and low, on 'getting what the Beatles were about'?

If you're stringing a Fender style headstock with a string tree for the D and G strings then the number of winds on those two strings matters less. On E and A strings more winds gives a better break angle at the nut. I put a new set of Pyramid Gold flats on my Lakland Decade last week: E string = 6 winds A string = 5 winds D string = 4 winds G string = 4 winds

Talking about 1965, that was when a new Fender was about three months wages.

Future generations musical ear worries
Had a quick look through the thread - can't see any post that remotely suggests "young people are crap". But, hey-ho, moving on... With regards earphones: They are convenient, they take up very little space in your pocket... but that's about all they have going for them. I use a pair of Sennheisers that are considered to be pretty good - IMV they're ok, but I wouldn't call listening to music through them a "particularly enjoyable experience".
Hey ho indeed but whatever.
