Things that should be easy ... but aren't ... why?
EssentialTension replied to Annoying Twit's topic in Theory and Technique
I'm probably just making excuses for myself but ISHST would be easier to play on a short scale bass like a Hofner than say a big fat necked Precision
Probably true but I suspect the Chuck Berry Talkin Bout You original may have been Willie Dixon on upright. -
Based on this thread I downloaded Sinatra at the Sands. Just fabulous (the Basie Orchestra are so on top of their game it's amazing)
Yes fabulous, one of my favourite albums, especially live album. -
The nice, expensive custom shop stuff is going to sound good though! ...
I used MAG and also ABM stuff straight from the local shop, It was all fine.
I`ve never owned an Ashdown rig, but as JJ Burnell uses them, and a man not known for a muddy indistinct sound to say the least, I wonder why people always mention this. Having heard JJs rig, neither of thoe words are anywhere near accurate, whereas solid and clear are pretty much spot-on (with the gain probably coming from his playing style more than through amp settings).
A further twist is that by 'solid and clear' I did not have in mind anything at all like JJB.
-
Totally agree about Ashdowns, they can be very muddy and indistinct, I drove miles to buy one and then drove miles back again without it. Poor miles I now only use Orange & Trace Elliott.
I used Ashdown for several years and it was never muddy nor indistinct but always solid and clear.

Future generations musical ear worries
No. I'm not familiar with the Eagles history, so don't understand what you mean. Either they're very particular about getting it spot on or the versions are completely different? Judging by the fact that they've recorded 'live' albums, I'm guessing it must be the latter. What would be the point (other than financial) of releasing songs that are exactly the same? Just do a greatest hits album.
The Eagles in concert had a reputation, perhaps not wholly deserved, of sounding exactly like the studio album. That's all. It was intended to be a mildly humorous comment. They did do a greatest hits album which is often said to be the third best selling album of all time. There was a financial point. -
... Listen to the original artist play live, tell me that they play their own song the same as the recording ...
So, you never saw the Eagles. -

It's just like when Leo Fender invented frets, it's much too easy now, no one trains their ear properly anymore. Terrible. -
I dont know exactly, although I believe he played on She said, she said after Macca walked out in a huff!. http://forums.steveh...bass-on.184632/
In Many Tears From Now by Barry Miles, McCartney is quoted as saying Harrison may well have played bass on She Said She Said. But what are the 'lots' where Harrison played bass? Honey Pie, Golden Slumbers/Carry that Weight, Birthday, Two of Us, are commonly said, Hey Jude, occasionally suggested but disputed. -
Sorry, but just don't get it. Start with a nice new bass then knock the crap out of it, maybe leave it in a damp place for bits of it to go rusty or could probably drag it home from a gig tied to the back of the car. Is it to give the impression that the player has been around the block plenty of times or is there something I'm missing? Don't see people throwing bricks at their new cars so what's the attraction when it comes to a guitar?
Your description might apply to some so-called relics but they really are not all the same. For example, the Fender Pino Palladino actually looks much like an old bass in a fairly natural way, but as already mentioned the Joe Strummer looks completely new but fake. Neither looks like the description you give.

will there ever be another music sub-culture?
EssentialTension replied to MacDaddy's topic in General Discussion
I asked 21 year old son 'will there ever be another music sub-culture?' Short answer: 'There are loads of music sub-cultures but there is no pretence to being socio-political movements either by themselves or by mass media.' -
Thing is with rock, you can tell by fashion if a rock fan is in to Gunge as opposed to say Thrash. Easy genre of rock had its own fashion and scene; punk; glam; goth; etc. Clothing associated with the rap scenes, or dance scenes seems to be generic.
I would have no idea whatsoever about telling grunge fashion from thrash fashion. In fact I couldn't even tell you what was grunge and what was thrash musically. I also couldn't do it for rap or dance scenes. -
i think Grandad means that what He ended up playing was not exactly the same as a Maccas original line. BTW did you know that George Harrison played a lot of the basslines too, but remained uncredited??
Well, Harrison maybe gets credit for about ten maximum. Are you saying there are more? -
Please excuse my ignorance here; assuming your transcription isn't a million miles from what you heard on the records, what leads you to thinking it's not what PM played? Or do you mean it's not what he played when he was seen to play it live? Has anyone here tried the Beatles Bass book ? I've got one and find the score might be right, but there's no reason for bashing up and down the neck in the way the TABs would have you doing it.
I'm saying this from a, i have no idea perspective, but is there a reason why a P Bass sounds bad soloed,? might it be the player, or just the focus in tone of the instrument.?
A Precision bass does not sound bad soloed - IMO.
