For solo practice acoustic bass guitars are fine. If you are going to play with anyone else at all, even one acoustic guitar, you will need to be amplified - upright basses are the size they are for a reason.

It's as if the guitar part that is actually happening now is more powerful than the memorised bass part because the memory is not as strong as it appears when there is nothing to interfere.

I rather liked the gold colour too. I had a red one of these as my very first bass. I resprayed it purple metallic.

That sounds like it needs a set up of truss rod and bridge saddles.

If you do want to remove the fretmarkers (i.e. lines) rather than defret as above, then the real answer is a whole new fingerboard.
