[/quote] The Fender Bass VI was introduced about 1961 but the Danelectro 6-string Bass - with which the Fender was intended to compete - had been around since the mid-fifties. I'm guessing neither become the norm for bass parts because they didn't thump like a Precision (or some other 4-stringers). When it did get used it tended to be either for tic-tac bass or for more twangy guitar-styled work in, for example, surf bands or Glen Campbell's solo on Wichita Lineman.

If I do play a bass in a shop I almost never play songs. I play every note up and down each string and see how it sounds, acoustically first and then, maybe, plugged in. Try playing by the neck, playing by the bridge, etc. etc. but not songs usually. I'm checking out the bass not doing a gig.

Very interesting. In the early 1980s I had a black 1970s Ripper that had been subject to an amateur defret rather like this one. I played it in a ska band. I've no recollection of what happened to it but wish I still had it.

I need my glasses to see what's happening on stage so I wear them. Why woudln't you wear them if you need them? Glasses are cool these days aren't they?
