I just like music. I'm not really interested in technical skill except insofar as it helps me to play or listen to music. Most so-called virtuoso playing leaves me cold and when it doesn't it will be because I like the tune. I'd much rather hear Pastorius playing with Joni Mitchell than doing his own stuff. I liked Japan but I've never sought out Mick Karn's solo stuff. etc.
Can I just ask someone to explain why an all British setup would be in some way preferable to one with foreign components?
Perhaps it's to match the all British car, and the all British clothing outfit, and the all British food ..... because it's important to keep money in our economy.

Bloody beginners left hand fingers
EssentialTension replied to The Hat's topic in General Discussion
Or use Simandl method (1, 2, 3+4 together) on first five frets. -
If you're playing with a band full of muppets, it doesn't matter if they're play covers or original material...!
Yep, that's right, although if they are muppets the cover songs are likely to be much better material than the so-called originals.

Speeding up playing with heavy strings
EssentialTension replied to richardjmorgan's topic in Theory and Technique
To play faster, practice slower until the muscle memory is there and then speed it up. -
Pino Palladino...once again...how sh*t hot is he?
EssentialTension replied to merello's topic in General Discussion
Here's another "Who Did You Think I Was", the bass-cam extra from a DVD, I believe. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFgFFNXahcg
Every time I hear it, I'm thrilled by the fill at 1.03: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFgFFNXahcg -
I would agree the wooly thing is more the cab than the head, my genz head sounds wooly through the 4x10, s at the studio we use. The heads just set on fire which can be an issue for some I do love the guys on here that claim how much top end their ashdowns have, never had an issue etc, my 51p with flats on has bags of sizzle! No it does not
The only thing I'm claiming is that I used Ashdown amps and cabs for several years in several different bands and never had any fires or other emergencies, and I never sounded wooly. I never found any any shortage of treble if I wanted it. Obviously your experience was different.
Turned out I actually like some treble and reliability
I had both of those.

I had a UK Ashdown for years and it was great.

Looks very nice, I like that colour.
I absolutely love the sound JE got around the time of Quadrophenia, but the tone he had from the Buzzard and Ashdown rig was a nasty assault on my lug holes in later years.
I'd agree with the view that Entwistle's tone went downhill over the years. -
Recommend me a Gibson E335 or Epiphone Casino type guitar!
EssentialTension replied to Musicman20's topic in Guitars
Gibson ES335 = semi-hollow, centre block, humbucking pickups. Epiphone Casino (equivalent to Gibson ES330) = fully hollow, no centre block, single coil P90 pickups. So, quite different guitars and you need to try them out. My son has a early 2000s Korean built Casino which he uses constantly in a variety of genres - it does seem to be an all-round guitar. -
It was right for The Who. I've got a couple of tickets for the o2 gig this June and sitting on the Pino side. Kind of a 40th anniversary for me as my first gig was seeing the Who in 1973 at a very, very young age and being the reason why I wanted to play an instrument.
Well, you're correct it was The Who with Entwistle and I too saw them with him several times in early 70s. However, when I saw them with Palladino a few years back I was much happier with the bass. YMMV. I realise 99% of people will disagree with me. -
... Pino's an awesome, awesome player, but he cannae lace the Ox's boots in my opinion ...
Never got Entwistle or his, IMO, terrible terrible tone. -
Domestic bass buying policies . . . most common restrictions
EssentialTension replied to Black Coffee's topic in Bass Guitars
Play what you've got and stop looking at stuff you don't need (and perhaps won't even want quite soon after you buy it). As my old man used to say: 'it's only another way of getting your money off you'. -
No preference, but it does depend on the design of the bass & the headstock.
Yes, if it was a Fender I'd expect and prefer 4 in line. If it was a Rickenbacker I'd expect and prefer two plus two.
-
No preference.

I've been having a think about when I've ever been asked if I was in a 'covers' band or an 'originals' band. I cannot ever recall ever being asked this question by a non-musician. I'm not even sure I've ever been asked it by another musician except on Basschat. What ordinary people actually ask is something like 'What sort of stuff do you play?'

Do you know what note you're on?
EssentialTension replied to Roland Rock's topic in General Discussion
Once I know the key, the notes are scale/chord tones - so in C I don't think of open E as E, but the root of iim and as the fifth of the V chord. Seems more useful to think of it that way since 95% of the tunes I play are completely diatonic.
Shouldn't that be 'root of iiim and as fifth of the VI chord'. -
It would probably be substantially more if it wasn't a refin and a bitsa (although a vintage bitsa).

Selmer Treble And Bass Revamp Finished Update
are you trolling? It's harder to follow because it's a mess! not saying the selmers are bad but they don't stand the test of time like the hiwatts
Of course I'm not trolling. Don't be ridiculous. -
This is simply human nature. You can deny it all you want.
I do deny it.
I learned long ago to stop trying to convince people to change their way of thinking.
It's hard to tell that you stopped.
