1.
hello , by french curiosity, what does mean "rumours afoot" is it that kind of "rumours"? http://www.talkbass....40/index25.html Have a good night all.
Looks very nice and a good review.
 2.
... this member feels this has been elitist and undemocratic ...
Sean, I can't see any systematic problem with having an 'elite' (call it that if you like) group of members who act to maintain certain standards of the site. Strong candidates are likely to have 'good standing in the community (i.e. are respected), good standing with the other moderators (i.e. no warnings) and have been an active part of the community over an extended period of time (because modding needs a little committment)'. In this case, undemocratic seems to me to be a very good thing. Anyway, if you were to have an election of mods then who would qualify for a vote? All and every member who joined and logged on once or only those with a certain number of posts? Let's say every member with over 750 posts could vote, that's another elite group.
 3.
Thanks guys. Mine is like a fretted bass and the dot is between the frets. But on my tuner where the dot is for say the g on the e string its reading a f#. Need to sort the intonation.
Is the open string octave harmonic very close to 17" from the nut? (I'm assuming it's a 34" scale bass.)
 4.
Hi all Bare with me on this, im a bit of a thicky when it comes to the tech stuff. I bought a cheapy fretless bass not so long ago without the fret lines/dots, just the dots on the edge of the neck. The guy i bought it of said most fretless basses are tuned just past the next dot, as is this. Now being a fretted lad its pretty easy finding the notes generally without looking apart from the odd riff, but you try doing that on a fretless when the notes on the 3rd, 5th etc are just past the neck dots, its weird. Ive tried retuning so its as a standard fretted bass but its a bit over the place time i get much past the 9th - i will continue to tinker as at the mo im always flat or sharp when im playing Anyone else heard of this "tuning just past the dot" thing? Cheers
I don't quite get what your problem is. A fretless bass is tuned the same as a fretted bass. On an unlined fretless the side dots will commonly be where the note is (although you still have to use your ear). Occasionally, expecially on cheap unlined fretless, as BRX said, the side dots will still be where they would be on a fretted bass, i.e. between the frets. Plus there are some that have no side dots at all like an upright bass.
 5.
Out of interest what do you intend to do with the info? IMO the brand is less important than the actual string itself. I would be interested to know if the votes for Thomastik were for anything other than TI Jazz Flats. I use different strings from different makes on different basses, and each string is picked on it's own merits and suitability for the bass. For instance La Bella Hard Rocking Steels are great with my Gus basses but they didn't suit the Yamaha BJ5B at all. Also just because I like round-wound steels from a manufacturer doesn't mean that I'll like their Nickels or flatwounds as well.
This hits the nail on the head. I use TI Jazz Flats but wouldn't use any other Thomastiks. I use La Bella 760 flats but would never use hard rockin steels.
 6.
... never been gigged ...
No surprise there.
 7.
So, I may have the opportunity to buy a 1963 Fender Jazz bass for £800! Crazy right?!
Correct - an actual for certain 1963 Jazz would not be £800. That would be crazy.
 8. Different strings on different basses. So I didnt't vote.
 9.
There is is a photo somewhere of Kate fondling a Fender Jazz Bass floating about on t' interweb
I think it's a Precision with a Jazz neck.
 10.
Something like "talent" is far more likely to be polygenic in character, so it's not really a case of "having it" or "not having it". However, I think it is clear that some people have more than others...
Yes, I rather think your edit misquoted me there as I was actually being sarcastic and certainly wasn't asking the question you quote me as asking. I was rather making fun of those who do ask it. However, I think it is not at all clear that some people have more than others...
 11.
Surely people have innate talent? A pre-disposition to a certain discipline that coupled with practice makes them outstanding at it? You might consider that a "gift".
I don't think it is 'sure' at all. Do some people have an innate talent for assuming that 'nature' beats 'nurture' or have they learned to associate talent with the innate?
 12.
No one plays like that without being intrinsically musical, the hard work of 'shedding' comes after.
You are begging the question. You can't prove 'nature' comes before 'nurture' by assuming that 'no one plays like that without being intrinsically musical' (i.e. 'nature' comes before 'nurture')
 13.
"The gift he was given"?!?! Please! Not one of us has a gift. Jamerson didn't have a gift, Jaco, Mark King, Wooten, Marcus - They don't have gifts. They sit and shed for HOURS. You see them on stage and hear them on a record for a moment, what you don't see is their lifetime of dedication to make that moment seem so effortless. Gift indeed!
I think that the 'gift' that was referred to was the harmonic quality of the songs he was playing at Motown and not some 'gift' of talent or whatever from God or elsewhere. The songs were a 'gift' in the sense that they were very good for Jamerson's style.
 14.
What about Rotosound flats? I have a set on my Precision at the moment. Not sure I'll keep them on for long though. They sounded great when recording EofF's acoustic demo but I've been unhappy with them in rehearsals thus far and haven't gigged them yet. Also find them quite hard to play.
I always use flats and I could live with the Roto flats if I had to but I don't really like their feel or tone either.
 15. I hate the sound and the feel of Rotosound 66s, at least I did 25 years ago when I last played some.
 16. Bobby Vega is definitely a great player.
 17.
They are 760FL red silk - thank you for pointing out the error! D'oh! What an arse. I have edited the post.
Thought they probably were but I would have had them if they were FS.
 18. Are these 760FL - 43 60 82 104 - red silk or 760FS - 45 65 85 105 - black silk? If they are FS I'll have them.
 19.
oh I didnt realise that, looking at the Fender spec it didnt mention that. Cheers Essential
Special Electronics: Active Electronics Controls: Master Volume, Pan Pot (pickup selector), Treble Boost/Cut, Midrange Boost/Cut, Bass Boost/Cut, Active/Passive Mini Toggle
 20.
I think the black nylons might have been worth a try.
I have La Bella 760Ns on my Takamine B10.
 21. I hate those bronze strings in every way. YMMV.
 22.
... very interesting about my arse ...
Oxymoron.
