[/quote] The only times I've ever played in any tuning other than EADG is when I briefly had a five string (BEADG) and on very rare occasions for odd songs I've dropped it to DADG. I've never once been asked by others to play in any tuning.

I used to play with a guitarist who had I don't know how many pedals but there were two boards and one of them was split level. He also had five guitars (all white Strats) in different tunings, each labelled with the key to which it was tuned so that there could be no mistake. However, he was a fast setup and never any confusion or problems with his sound.

  16. I think the influence on tone is extremely minimal - much less than strings, pickups, pick or fingers, playing near bridge or neck, amp settings etc., they all beat fingerboard wood. But I still think rosewood looks and feels better.

[/quote] The pics I posted show black paint not covering the belly or forearm cuts. That's how it commonly is on non-ply sunburst basses. Your bass did not have that arrangement but instead had black paint hiding the fact (as you have since clarified) that the bass is ply. The arrangement of black paint on your bass is a very common sign (although not in itself a certain guarantee) that the bass is ply, and that's why people commented on it after you had said that it was solid alder. A solid wood bass is very unlikely to have the black paint as it is on your bass. We know this from experience. You can tell stuff from the paint job. The paint job is important and clear evidence that the bass is ply and, as you later confirmed, it is ply. If that's not clear, then I give up.
