There's some truth in this but, nonetheless, there'll be a few of us here who tried most or at least many flats. Flats vary as much as rounds do and you'll need to try them to find what you like. For example, I like La Bella, Pyramid, GHS, and Thomastik flats but I don't particularly like D'Addario or Rotosound flats.
 2. I've got the CD and I didn't realise he was the bassist.
 3.
Why did you remove the info from first post ? its always good to leave it as its helpful if anyone has similar questions and they do a search imo
Yes.
 4.
A 1p is 1.65mm, which is 2/32" by my reckoning, so: 1 1/2 pennies, 2 1/2 pennies and 3 1/2 pennies.
Ah, but what if it's a pre-1992 penny which is only 1.52 mm thick?
 5. It varies but E string at 12th is: Lakland Decade = 3/32" Fender Precision = 5/32" Takamine B10 = 7/32" I don't know how many pennies that is.
 6.
Hi Dave, I've got LaBellas, bigger gauges than the TI's on there now & never had any trouble with breakages, it's just the length to silk I was wondering about. BTW the bridge on my '51 is through only. Cheerz, John
Well, I believe the usual story is don't put La Bellas through the body but TIs are OK, so despite my experience and given your experience, you're probably safe. The only time I had a silk problem with TIs was with the B string on a G&L 2500 and through body.
 7.
Can any users please say if these (Long Scale) are long enough for through body stringing, I'm wanting to fit to a MiJ '51 P-bass. Cheerz, John
John, I've used these through the body on a Precision (although not a '51). They fitted OK but I did have a string break at the bridge on two occasions. I always use bridge stringing now.
 8.
Wishy-washy liberal
Steady on! It's not a flogging offence.
 9.
Looks that way. I'm confused as to why up/down/in/out/shakeitallabout would make any difference though.
I can't see how it would make any difference but maybe 'shakeitallabout' would be a kind of mute-unmute-mute-unmute tremolo effect.
 10.
On reflection, I think this is a bit harsh. Leaving tracking aside for a moment, the only way I would know if an untracked item arrived would be if the buyer leaves feedback, or contacts me directly. If I get no contact, I assume everything is ok, and pretty much everyone I deal with on eBay does the same. If it's a business shipping lots of stuff, that's the only way it can operate. I can't remember the last time anyone contacted me to ask if an item arrived if I haven't left feedback. I never get Amazon asking if my stuff arrived. Add in tracking, and, yes, it's easier for the seller to check, but usually the buyer is making contact asking where the parcel is long before the shipper would accept it's lost. So, while I agree it's a good idea to check, and even a bit dumb not to, I don't think it's the flogging offense that's being implied.
Maybe harsh but it's what I would do with a private sale - clearly with a large scale business like Amazon it would be unrealistic but that's not what we are talking about here. I was assuming tracking and I would want to know that the item had arrived safe and sound. However, I'm not in favour of flogging in this or in any other cases - so I don't know where you got that from.
 11.
I'm temped by one of those Bass Mutes... I've tried socks and pieces of foam etc, but find it hard to get the right level on each string, esp if I'm removing it / installing it on stage and trying to do it quickly. A lever arrangement with preset dampening per string seems like a jolly good idea.
... and don't those Bass Mutes damp the string from the side rather than over or under?
 12.

Hi all, this is my first post. Did I read somewhere before that a mute should be placed below round wound strings and above flats? Would appreciate your thoughts on this. I recently acquired a 57 AV P bass with flats and a bridge cover and am interested to know where the foam mute should be placed in this configuration. Great to see a thread on Babbit, who I feel sometimes is very underated. Just love his lines on signed, sealed, delivered and midnight train to georgia.

The muting foam on a P bass was glued under the bridge cover, so above the strings. The muting system on the J bass was below the strings, as it was on Gibsons and Rickenbackers. All those basses had factory flatwounds in the days when they had mutes. I don't think it makes any difference. Or, at least, what makes more difference is what material you use for the mute and how close to the bridge it is.
 13.
I don't think Kate Bush counts as a talentless tart.
I don't think kate Bush counts, you must be thinking of Carol Voordemann.
 14.
Which was kinda my point in my first post Dave. As I said, this is why eBay protect the buyer, there are a lot of ttake the money and run sellers out there
I know Chris, but I thought it was important enough to be worth repeating.
 15.
hi there , sold an instrument trough ebay, on the 2 of february, posted on the 10 /2 to latvia , parcel force did not leave a notification under the buyer door , so the guy not being home was unware that delivery been attempted, now after two month the bass is back to me i offered the guy that i could post back to him on my expenses, the guy changed is mind, so asking for a full refund. i ve spoken to , to parcel force to start a claim as now i find my self with an item which i don t need and 500 pound to refund,so i ve told the guy that if he want a refund i will happily give to him but need s to wait for me to sell the item again , or to solve the problem with parcel force. today i find my self with a paypal chargeback. any suggestion? please reply asap EVILBAY
Maybe I am missing something but ... How could you not know that the bass was undelivered for nearly two months? Were you not tracking it for the delivery signature? Were you not communicating with the buyer to see that it had arrived safe and sound? Were you not communicating with the shipper to find out what had happened when it hadn't arrived? Did you not realise that when the shipper took the package from you after you contracted with them to deliver on your behalf that, as the supplier of the item, you still held responsibility for it being delivered?

 17.
The only problem with the mousemat solution is that it can't realistically be changed between songs
Why not? It only takes a couple of seconds.
 18.
Agreed that Haslip is a tremendous talent, and plays complex stuff. Didn't Hendrix play an upside down guitar? No complex stuff there of course.
The guitar may have been upside down but Hendrix had his strings as standard and not upside down.
 19. They look very nice but even the smallest one is massive by my standards.
 20.
Sounds like a good plan, thanks.
We'll need to know the result of your experiment.
 21.
My daughters bought me a set of flats for my birthday and I can't make my mind up whether to put them on my G&L SB1 or my 58 Bitsa P bass. Any thoughts anybody, my head is too fuzzy to make an informed decision tonight. Having a job deciding whether to have a tea or a coffee at the moment
They're both four-a-side headstocks so try them on one and then try them on the other.
 22.
i think the point is that either way of positioning the dots is ok and is used by bass makers ...
Yes, both arrangements are used, so not definitive from Sadowsky unless he's only talking about his own basses. My Takamine B10 has side dots between the lines and I used to have a Jazz with them on the lines. To me, on the lines makes much more sense but some prefer the other way and anyway, as has been pointed out several times already, it's a cheaper manufacturing process to use the same neck as would be used for a fretted instrument.
 23.
... Dots on a lined fretless are always the same as a fretted neck ...
I had a Fender Jazz lined fretless with dots at the lines and not between them.
 24.
That would be of little relevance in a dispute over songwriting royalties. No! The only way that it would be a different song is if the singer sang significantly different words to a significantly different melody.
This is it. Song copyright commonly applies to lyrics and melody alone, anything else is arrangement. You can get paid for arranging but it's not songwriting.
