My playing is getting better from reading...
EssentialTension replied to bubinga5's topic in General Discussion
... you can find an F but takes a life time ...
I'm not an accomplished reader myself but the answer to this problem seems to me to be don't be looking for an F (or whatever note). Just get your hand in the right place, know what key you're in and play the intervals. So, you're in key of C (or whatever), just play the fourth (i.e. F in this case). This does depend on knowing your scales because what you see written will commonly take you up and down those scales. -
does anyone regret selling their first bass
EssentialTension replied to SidVicious1978's topic in General Discussion
I don't regret selling my first bass but I do regret giving it to someone. -
Listen to blues. Some are 12 bars long, some are 16 bars long. The standard is 12 bars but it's not a hard and fast rule.
Definitely not a hard and fast rule. I depped with a band that did an 11 and 3/4 bar blues and a 10 and a 1/2 bar blues. No one warned me. I was definitely confused and blamed the drummer.

Alternatives to drums as percussion in a band setting
sounds like someone kicking a dustbin down a fire escape to me!
Of course, that is another alternative, but I wouldn't want to have to set up the fire escape without a road crew. -
Purchase price & carriage + 3.7% then VAT 20% + approx £12 customs - IIRC
That's correct except that it's purchase price plus carriage plus insurance if you have any.

You can calculate the cost here: http://www.dutycalcu...ax-calculation/ You'll need to add the customs handling charge which varies from one handler to another.

A Precision doing what it does best...
EssentialTension replied to wateroftyne's topic in Bass Guitars
Yep, two drums, one precision bass and two pairs of sunglasses; it's all you need. -
I use the same method, but with my index finger. Halfway up the nail is my action.
If we are talking at the end of the fingerboard than I have the same. -
7-5mm isn't too low, in my opinion. Yes for slapping but I haven't read that that's what Artisan is going for. I'm suggesting 7-5mm only because I wish my first upright had action like that, or that I know it could be changed.
Where are you measuring that 7mm height? -
Audition next week, how do I prepare?
... not sure i would want to be in a band that wont tell you much. ... would give me bad vibes before i got my bass out.
Agreed, if it was me, I wouldn't go to an audition on the basis of what the OP describes. I also wouldn't rehearse for a year for a gig. -
Chiming in! I've got my B10 just few weeks ago, it is an older one, made in 1995 according to the serial number. What a great instrument I must say! Mine has dead preamp (but was really cheap so absolutely worth the money), the pickup is wired straight to the jack socket then I go to the outboard Fishman pre, the same I use for my double bass. It sounds pretty damn incredible One thing I've tried right from the start is putting double bass strings on it. I had one unbranded steel-core set lying around, had to cut them to length; bridge silks go a bit over the bridge saddle, but other than that it worked fine, the bass plays and feels just great! I mainly play it horisontally like bass guitar. Tried to play vertically but didn't like it for some reason. Double bass feels much more naturally for me than B10 played verically. Tried it with the bow too but fingerbord radius and stand-off from the body is not big enough: it is impossible to dig in well without touching adjacent strings. It can be done as a gimmick once in a gig but not as main technique....
Welcome to the club.
Music journalism is fadish, it has been for years, and the music business is just a game of 'it's not what you know, it's who you know' nowadays. Frankly it doesn't really matter whose money is behind you. She'd hardly be the first person to have used nepotism to her advantage to make her way to the top and I doubt she'll be the last. All I care about is the end product, which with Lana Del Ray is a resounding 'meh'. She ticks all the right boxes; at first glance she's alternative and a bit jazzy, plus she fits neatly into the 'female solo artist with husky voice' category that is so definitely flavour of the month right now. But let's face it, she's doing nothing new. If I want to listen to Nancy Sinatra, I'd listen to Nancy Sinatra. She hasn't got any lasting power, and I do believe she'll melt away and be forgotten in a year or two unless she does something drastic. And let's face it... Nancy Sinatra had better songs too.
I don't know and haven't heard Lana Del Ray but a big plus one on listening to Nancy Sinatra - especially the stuff recorded with Lee Hazlewood.

I had a similar experience. I eventually put it down not to any intrinsic difficulty of folk music but me simply not being familiar enough with the genre.

He actually works for Fender so I don't know if that was a factor in getting the signature basses - either way the fretless is an excellent bass. -
