Commenting on for sale section prices?
EssentialTension replied to stingrayPete1977's topic in General Discussion
Sellers are free to avail themselves of the marketplace, advertising goods they posses at the price they determine, so long as they do so within the rules established for the regulation of the marketplace. In that context, stating that the freedom of the market is sacrosanct is completely correct, and there is no double standard being advocated. It's also the case that, for other than auctions, roups and exchanges, it's also common commercial practice to rely on privity of negotiations/contract, so, observing the rules and common practice all comments on price should be reserved for private communications.
I really don't see how you can claim 'freedom of the market is sacrosanct' and at the same time say that this freedom is 'within the rules established for the regulation of the marketplace'. It's logically incoherent. Either the freedom of the market is sacrosanct or it's regulated and therefore not sacrosanct.
As far as the current situation is concerned, if you want a change in policy, petition the controllers of the forum.
I don't want a change in policy, I think it's fine regulated as it is, without sacrosanct freedom. -
Very good.

I was googling for something else the other day and I'm fairly sure I saw these for sale separately. Can't remember where though, sorry.

How easy is it to play in two bands?
EssentialTension replied to Benplaysbass's topic in General Discussion
I'm only in one at the moment but occasionally dep for three others. I've often been in two or three and at one time four. First in the diary gets the gig. Almost everyone I play with is in at least two bands. -
Yep, he did get it (I left it in the hard case 'candy' compartment). It didn't help me much either
Perhaps we're both a bit thick.
-
Dave, I owned it before Clarky and there was a user guide for the pre amp, did you not get it?
Thanks, yes, I got it, it's just that I'm a bit thick.
-
Anyone have any views/experience on the old (non-tube) pre-amp verses the newer tube version? Chris
Mine (previously Clarky's) is the older preamp and, although I'm still trying to figure out how to use it, it seems fine. I think I read (probably on Badassbassplayers.com) that the Cool Tube preamp is a direct fit for about $400 if you want to replace it.
The freedom of the market is sacrosanct. ............. Not happy with a price? Negotiate in private or walk away. Don't stand on a soapbox with a megaphone outside someone's shop complaining about the prices.
Surely, if, as you say, the freedom of the market is sacrosanct then if I'm not happy with a price I can negotiate in public, not in private, or stand on a soapbox complaining about the prices. I don't see how you can have it both ways. It sounds like you want this freedom to be only on your terms. -
This was already asked about here: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/161172-theme-and-back-button-problems/ No answer apparent yet.

A vintage bit of fretless Rickenbacker...
How about I bring my 4003FL down to Brighton some time mate and try your Takamine?
You're very welcome to come down but please don't bring the Ricky because I have enough problems already. -
anybody help identify these strings?
EssentialTension replied to shug's topic in Accessories and Misc
I bought an old G&L bass from a guy in California a while back and it's got the best strings I ever used on it. Trouble is, I've no idea what they are and neither has the dealer. They're semi-flats, I think, got silver ball-ends with red silk at the bridge end and blue at the other. Other than that, no clues. I'd be dead grateful for any ideas at all Regards Shug
What kind of red and blue? They might be Steve Harris flats which I believe have West Ham silks. -
Too many people judge Rics without ever trying one
I have been one of those people but not anymore, it would have to be flats though. -
It should also be pointed out that a lot of people who diss the top end gear on web forums have never tried them.
Some people dis low end gear wihtout trying it too.

Commenting on for sale section prices?
EssentialTension replied to stingrayPete1977's topic in General Discussion
This is what I do when I go to sell some thing on here. It therefore makes it a bit harder when a lot of users delete the asking price when they go to edit the post after the sale (I'm guilty of this a couple of times myself thinking about it). Maybe some thing could be put in the guidelines about leaving the price up? So as to help other members wanting to sell similar gear price accordingly.
There are still lots of sale threads that request a deletion when the sale is finished - much better if they aren't deleted. -
Can I just ask what you mean by the mathematics ?
I don't know what was meant but: (long scale) - (two frets) = (short scale) = mathematically correct (long scale) - (two frets) = (unholy mess) = actually correct

Commenting on for sale section prices?
EssentialTension replied to stingrayPete1977's topic in General Discussion
There have been plenty of occasions where the poster who was making a negative comment on the asking price (and not the seller) was the one making an error. This has been for various reasons: wrong model, upgrades, case included etc. The present rule seems to me a good one. -

This was mine until a few weeks ago and is definitely a top notch fretless and I regret having to let it go. Altering to a VVT or VPT would in my view be an improvement but the stock setup of VT and 3-way selector is quite workable so, despite Pierre not being keen, I wouldn't let that put off any prospective buyer. -
After a decent/good blues sounding bass
A few years ago a player I knew went along to a Gary Moore audition with his 6 string Thumb and was told that he either played an old Precision or the audition ended right there. But then I saw Albert Collins several times when Johnny B Gaydon was playing a 5 string Vigier and Buddy Guy's bass player uses GK amps. Some people have the blinkers on and some don't, but you'll never get hassled playing a Fender in any blues band.
I saw John Mayall a couple of years ago and the bassist had a six string. -
"Good" when it comes to the upper end of the musical instrument market (which IMO for a bass is £2000+) is entirely subjective. At the mass-produced end of the market the instruments are designed to appeal to as many players as possible. Beyond that the luthiers who make "high end" basses are catering to a much smaller audience of players who want specific features from their instruments. At this level the basses only have two things in common: 1. The attention to detail/fit/finish/construction will be exceptional. 2. They are stringed instruments capable of producing low notes. Everything else is down to the tastes and ideas of the luthier making the bass. That's why you can't compare "high end" instruments to each other because they are made to appeal to different people. What you are buying into at this level is not just an instrument that will do the job, but one that satisfies you on every level - sound, playability, looks. If you've found a cheaper bass that ticks all the boxes for you then that's fantastic, but many of us want something more or different and that's where the more expensive basses come in.
BRX sums it up very neatly I think. I'd just add that any bass 'high end' or 'low end' is only as 'good' as the person playing it.
In blues you do your own thing, so you can use any bass, amp, EQ or strings you like. In the US blues players have mostly used what is at hand and cheap, so from the 50's that would mostly have been a Fender. Quite a lot of these players switched to Musicman when they started and recently I've seen guys using Laklands but mostly it's been Fenders. The bottom line with blues is it's about what you play not the gear you use.
An acquaintance of mine played bass for some American blues guy on tour a few years ago. The American blues guy was not really happy that the bass was a modern five string.
