Which bass did Macca play on Birthday (White Album)?
Compare and contrast with McCartney playing the Ricky (or is that the Jazz?):
So, is that the Ricky or the Jazz? I vote Jazz. -
I found this thread to be educational and informative. I bought a Hofner because my band sometimes and on occasion cover helter skelter, I'm a bit gutted to find that the beatles used stuff other than the hofners and ricks.
When McCartney plays Helter Skelter live these days it is the Hofner: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZV18scOsX54 -
I agree but I wish Fender would start making the classics. You can't get an American made Fender 51 re-issue in white or natural for example. Or a american made Fender Jazz with blocks and binding based on the 62 and a 75 Jazz. Or even an american 70's Telecaster bass with the humberbucker up at the neck. Fender should stick with the classics more and not just limit them to Japanese or Mexican specials or Squires.
OK, I'm easy-going, I agree with that too.

I rather like the look of it but not at £3000 or anywhere near it.
This. I'm quite happy for the mainstream manufacturers to carry on what they are doing. It doesn't really interest me. Nowadays there are so many companies and luthiers making instruments that someone somewhere will be producing pretty much exactly what you want. Let the big manufacturers carry on producing designs that have hardly evolved since the 60s and let others create something new and innovative.
I agree with this - although I'm one who likes the Fenders rather than the other stuff.
Hmm all a bit confusing really. I love Lennon but he shouldn't have been allowed to play bass on stuff, he was bloody awful, not a patch on Macca or Harrison. I would still guess 'Birthday' was the Fender VI but I'd be interested to hear otherwise.
I agree with all of that. -
... you don't get left handed cellos or violins (that's because they all play in a row in an orchestra so you would have someones elbow hitting your face if they were playing the other way round)
I use a knife and fork left handed and I've had the elbow problem.

Well, here's Lennon playing the same Bass VI (if that's what it is on Birthday): -
Oh no - that sounds nothing like a Hofner (to my ears, anyway). Doesn't sound like a Ric either. I could believe a Bass VI but I wouldn't be surprised to find it was a Jazz.
That's a bit radical isn't it Jack, actually listening to the track to figure out what bass it is? Why can't you just guess like the rest of us? -
It would be hilarious - if chronologically impossible - for the answer to have been a Ritter 'Eye of Horus' bass. Can you imagine Beedster's apoplectic face?
He wouldn't be the only one. -

Getting an unlined fretless lined
EssentialTension replied to Bobby K's topic in Repairs and Technical
Yep, have thought about those things too. I've got a pretty good ear but would just prefer to have the lines. At the same time, I don't want to avoid a nice bass just because it's unmarked, hence my original question.
I don't see why a luthier can't do this without massive expense but, as has been suggested already, I'd go for just getting used to the unlined. So I recommend that instead of lines you get the luthier to put a side dot at every 'fret'. -
I doubt you could have strung George up with La Bella Jamerson's, I reckon he'd only tolerate light Slinky's
So it must have been the Bass VI. -
I really like the tone on that track, and I read somewhere - TB I think - that it was the Hofner, which didn't seem right or proper, especially given I'd just bought a Ric c64 . Your first (unedited) post made me laugh Dave, it appeared to suggest that the bass that Macca played on the track was George!

A bass called 'George'. That's what I thought too.
Oh dear, I must inprove my use of English. -
General wondering about Squier basses...
EssentialTension replied to catmanhog's topic in Bass Guitars
Hello all... I have been offered a rather splendid Squier precision, a 2005 version, at a great price. Anyone have one of these and how do they compare with the other Squire basses out there, like the affinity P -' s for instance. Any info greatly appreciated, as ever! Thanks.
They vary in quality. Which model is it? -

Should i tune slightly flat?
EssentialTension replied to digitalmetal's topic in Repairs and Technical
Hi Ive just checked my intonation following this video: And found something a bit odd, and am wondering if anyone can shed a little light on whats happening, Im checking my 5 string ESP (Not LTD) Surveyor Bass and when i check the heavy B string and tune the harmonic then pluck the open note with my pick and it goes slightly sharp (just a couple of Cents and then comes to a solid B as the note rings out. So i presume thats ok and in tune. Then if i play the first fret © it goes sharp and the comes back to C after a second and this seems to be the case for any of the fretted notes, I play quite fast aggressive metal and im wondering if i should tune slightly flat so that the note i strike is in tune rather that the second after i play the fretted note, or am i just worrying too much? The reason this whole thing has come about is that when i play with my band something doesnt sound quite right, my guitarist insists that his guitar is in tune although im never going to really know for sure as he 's not that approachable to let me see myself. I just want to be 100% sure its not me thats the problem Thanks!
Sounds to me like you need the intonation properly set-up. There are plenty of examples online of how to do it. Try this one: -
Fretted notes are always slightly sharp compared to open notes...
Sorry, but this is not correct. A fretted note can be flat or sharp depending upon the set-up of the intonation.
