Thanks chaps. It has dots on top of the neck in the usual places but i never realised i was so reliant on the fret markers on the fingerboard If "someone" wanted to put temporary fret markers on the fingerboard how would they do it?
I'd say learn to use the side dots, even if it's fretted.

I bought a set of strings from Phil at a very good price. He bothered to post them to me even though I'm only the other side of town. Thanks Phil.
It's just a sound I hear a lot, and when deciding what would sit well in a track I sometimes think 'hmmm a P would fill this one's ass very well'
Jake, will your forthcoming P have flats on it? -
I think, quite often, an instrument can delight in isolation, only to find it doesn't work for you in an ensemble situation.
But not in the case of a Precision. Jake, just try a few until you find the one you like. You don't have to spend a lot and you can hardly go wrong. -
I recently played a D at the 19th fret. I didn't really like it. I probably won't go back there.
How do you get those (labella tapes) in the UK now ? Stringbusters and strings direct don't seem to stock them. Andy
Andy, sorry to be so slow responding I only just noticed the post. They have them at Thomann: http://www.thomann.de/gb/la_bella_black_nylon_760n.htm and at Lord of the Strings: http://www.lordofthestrings.com/lots/RAPRD...N/11001420.html and maybe Stringstar: http://www.stringstar.com/la-bella-deep-ta...ound-1773-p.asp
haha no if you supervised them i would have offered you some basses to sooth the deal into giving me A*s ;-)
Fortunately they are double marked internally and then checked by the exam board externally .
I just find it very restrictive on the imagination when you have to write something just to get marks (to the brief) rather than writing something that would be genuinely interesting.
Actually what we're looking for is imagination and something genuinly interesting rather than just another copied from somewhere else description with no thought given to it.
Something like How has Bass developed in the funk genre would be very useful and exciting for any young bass player to research.
I agree, but better still would be to go further than merely describing the development and to say something imaginative about it's importance - otherwise why bother even describing it?
When it becomes you must analyse something of your choice but make sure you do an introduction, SWOT analysis, conclusion, and bibliography, referencing and everything like that people choose what will get them good marks and be quick and easy to do.
I've no idea what SWOT analysis is so I can't comment on that but my students certainly don't 'choose what will get them good marks and be quick and easy to do' because if it was quick and easy to do it would be unlikely to get good marks.
Maybe something like how does todays pop basslines compare to the pop basslines in the 60's and 70's would be ok but im sure how does green apples compare to red apples would get you more marks.
The comparison of pop basslines today versus '60s could work well but you'd need to clarify the purpose of the comparison, for example, 'After five decades, is the influence of James Jamerson still important in contemporary popular music?'. I'm sure that the apple comparison, as it stands, would get very few marks although it too might be developed into something slightly more interesting and imaginative: Red apple or green apple - which is to be preferred as one of your five-a-day?
Hey all, For college, I am soon going to be doing an extended project. Which is basically an opportunity to research and present (either in an essay, a practical application, presentation or basically anything else) about anything you are interested in. So, I am thinking of conducting my project on something to do with Bass, and was wondering if any of you had any ideas to get my mind working? I was thinking that some possibilities could be 'the evolution of bass playing in funk,' or 'how bass design has changed over time,' you get the general idea... Any ideas would be very helpful! Also, any links to books, articles, websites etc which may help would also be gratefully received (I need to suggest 3 books I may use before I can begin the project.) Thanks!
Hi Jordan, in my college I'm one of the supervisors of the EDEXCEL dissertation version of these projects - is that the one you will be doing? I'm not familiar with the requirements for the other exam boards. If you are doing the EDEXCEL dissertation, then, as you clarify your topic, you will want to turn it from a topic area or descriptive question into a normative question. For example, the answer to 'How has bass design changed over time?' might be merely descriptive but you'll be expected to argue a position or point of view and not merely be descriptive. So, a question like 'Was the development of the electric bass guitar the most important technological innovation in modern popular music?' enables you to describe but also requires some analysis and development of an argument which concludes whether the electric bass guitar was or was not the most important technological innovation in modern popular music. I hope that makes sense and is helpful.
... Flats, and also through bridge as opposed to through body stringing, have helped tame the bags of sustain the instrument had when it first came to me wearing factory rounds. I know sustain is a sign of a well put together instrument and that if you were a les paul, face melting solo rocking guitar type, your thinking would be different but I'm of the opinion that basses, mine at least, don't want too much sustain.
Agreed, I've never come across a bass that had too little sustain.
... or will they go out of fashion?
I didn't realise they were in fashion. After all, I've never seen one being used live on stage. Perhaps I need to get out more.
That looks brilliant. I don't know what Lakland are up to at the moment and when they'll get the equivalent DJ model back into their lineup but if they did more instruments like this I'd definitely buy one. I love my Darryl Jones 4.
The replacement for the DJ is the AJ series - US already and coming as a Skyline in the autumn: http://www.lakland.com/44-55-AJ.htm

So here they are, new, unused and £75 posted. Phil
Phil, which gauge are they? Are they the ordinary tuning ones and not fifths or solos? And PM sent.

I never use Rotosound. I do use La Bellas, Thomastiks, Pyramids.
Are flats better for pick or fingers? Or does it make a difference?
Different sounds, you got to try them, but both ways are common. The clean crisp clear bass sound on a lot of sixties pop material is session guys, e.g. Joe Osborn, Carol Kaye, John Paul Jones, playing flats with a pick. Also, a lot of McCartney's bass on Beatles stuff is flats with a pick. The soul and R&B of the same period is more likely to be flats with fingers and so more of a thud. Someone else will bring it up to date with more recent material I'm sure.
Damnit - this is torture. I'm still waiting for mine to come back from Tascam's repair shop. I bought it off ebay and it broke after 2 days. If Tascam can't mend it I'll going to have to try and get a refund from the guy I bought it off (probably using the reconciliation centre). Why couldn't you have put this up for sale at the end of May? Seriously though, in the two days that it worked, I could tell that I'd have used it a hell of a lot. It's a great piece of kit.
Sorry about that - I've only sold it because I got a Phil Jones Bass Buddy now and I wasn't using the Tascam at all. Good luck with your problematic one.
