Hola all. I have been offered a P-bass serial number mz4086717 I am having trouble dating it as there seem to be too many numbers. Can anyone help?
Have you seen the serial number yourself or could it be that it was told to you incorrectly? Mind you, at Guitar Data Project that number is recognised as Ensenada Plant, Mexico, 2004-5
That would be my guess MZ4 but it has 1 too many didgits on the end.
Oh OK, I see that now, MZ4 + 5 digits usually, yes?
... EDIT: I meant to add.... the annoying thing about these debates is that while people (including me) are shooting off their opinions, there actually will be an answer to the question. Has anybody done any actual scientific research I wonder?
Here's some research cited on Wikipedia on perfect pitch:
Genetics and absolute pitch The prevalence of absolute pitch is considerably higher among individuals with early childhood in East Asia.[40][41][42][43] While this difference might seem to be genetic in origin;[44] individuals of East Asian ancestry who are born or reared in the United States or Canada are significantly less likely to develop absolute pitch than those raised in East Asia.[43] This presents the likelihood that the difference is explained by cultural experience rather than genetic heritage. Language may be an important factor; many East Asians speak tonal languages such as Mandarin and Cantonese, while others (such as those in Japan and certain provinces of Korea) speak pitch accent languages, and the prevalence of absolute pitch may be partly explained by exposure to pitches together with meaningful musical labels very early in life.[41][42][43][45]
That will be MIM 2004 won't it?
Very true did he even play a Bass V??
I remember reading somewhere that Jamerson had a Bass V but hated it so much that he threw it across the studio saying 'Never let me play that thing again!'. [I may have invented that because my memory is not what it used to be.]

£2859!! Top bid still dates from last Monday lunchtime and keeps being pushed up by newer bids.
Does reading a book on theory count towards practice? I suppose it doesn't really does it
I'd say it might count as long as what you'd been reading then informed your practice and your understanding of that practice.
I was going to say that!
Me too but I thought it was too predictable.
I'm considering a Bass Buddy too. At the moment I'm using a Tascam MP-BT1 but as I rarely use the effects and other facilities available so I'm thinking it would be easier to plug my computer or iPod straight into a Bass Buddy.
So I got the Bass Buddy and very pleased so far. Tascam up for sale soon.
If this turns out to be right, the buyer is a twit (unless of course it turns out to be a fellow Basschatter, in which case "Congatulations on your excellent purchase - you're a splendid chap and I hope you enjoy this recent aquisition and have many happy years playing it".............Twit).
I predict that there are twits lurking on ebay.

I say it will go for substantially in excess of £4,000.
-
Already at £2,551.00 with over three days to go.

I voted #2 as expected but if you put a cream pearl pickguard on it then I'll vote #1

I seem to recall an interview with Duck Dunn. He was asked 'Have you ever played with a metronome?'. He replied 'Yeah, Al Jackson'.
it's telling you that whilst the numbers show about half of BC wish they knew more theory, and a bunch of those that don't reckon they know loads, there are still people who will argue it's not at all needed
That sounds about right. A solid 20% had an 'excellent' knowledge of theory and didn't feel they needed more (some used it some didn't). The majority (58.1%) knew 'very little' or 'some' theory but wanted to know a lot more. 15% knew 'some' theory but didn't feel a need to know more, so, presumably they were happy. Only 5.7% knew 'very little' or 'none' and were happy with that situation.
Here's the REAL deal. Mr Mark King. I'll always love this fella. It's quite a long video but worth watching.
I really liked the way he came across as dead ordinary (in a good sense), but I still didn't like it when he started playing. I know it's extremely technically proficient but it does nothing for me musically.

Tone, were they as bothered about it as us?
EssentialTension replied to silentbob's topic in General Discussion
Not if youre recording an album IMO, and especially not if you are using different effects and playing styles.
So, that's still about five minutes isn't it as long as you are prepared. -
That was sort of how I felt as well; 100% positive on over 1000 transactions should count for something! And I thought that bridge cover is correct for this bass?
I think the bridge cover is correct. It looks real to me. The question would be over whether the seller actually has such a rare bass but the feedback is excellent.
-
Possibilites: 1 Slip a thin bit of card at the G string end under the bridge and above the piezo, or maybe below the piezo. 2 Cut the bridge into two halves between the A string and D string. 3 Cut the bridge into four pieces, one for each string. 4 Some combination of those three.

Nice lollipop tuners.
I personally think any [s]bass player[/s] musician worth their salt will nowadays spend as long as they can getting their tone right before recording a note in the studio. ....
So, for any musician worth their salt that would need about five minutes? -
Ibanez DAB1-1 'desktop' bass amplifier...and tiny cabs
EssentialTension replied to ahpook's topic in Amps and Cabs
it'd be great to get one of those and a couple of the tiny fender and marshall-style ones you can get for a tiny backline at a gig. edit: i've been thinking about this for the last 10 mins and i wonder how small you could make a viable bass cabinet ? a 1x4 ? i know genz benz make a 1x8... see - i've got all this spare plywood round the house
Phil Jones Bass Briefcase is 2x5" but I think the depth and structure of the cabinet is going to make a difference whatever the speaker size. -
Advanced cynicism is a terrible thing
EssentialTension replied to Happy Jack's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
They both appear to have 1963 pot codes - at Guitar Dater Project that is. -
At the nut, standard Jazz width is 1.5" (38mm), standard Precision width was 1.75" (44mm) but changed, sometime in late 1960's I think, to 1.625" (41mm). My '62 reissue is 1.75". I like the wider nut but a lot of people don't - hence Nigel's passport comment. You need to try one. On fingerboard radius, the higher the number then the flatter the fingerboard, the lower the number the more curved the fingerboard.
