I know exactly how you feel, I went into GAK last week to try a '62 AV P-bass, of course it had rounds on so I was offered the Pino to try - £2399 I believe - yes it had TI Flats on, but it was very rusty in places & had loads of paint missing didn't fancy it
I've played that Pino, it's rather nice despite the rust.
 2.
My Rotosounds are nylon flats! And but the look of the binding, possibly the same brand... I'm not sure how much it affects the sound really - I mean, I'm far from confident that I'd be able to tell the difference in a controlled experiment. But thanks to everyone for their advice so far. Think I might try out the washer idea before attacking the silk bindings...
Herbie Flowers' strings are Roto Trubass like yours and it's said they've been on the bass for thirty years or more. I doubt whether it makes much diufference at all to sound. However when I had a similar problem I did carefully cut back the silk.
 3.
Regarding the OP, was n't it Jamerson / Funk Brothers on the original Jackie Wilson track? (Therefore could n't be a bum note.......!!!)
Jakcie Wilson's Reet Petite was recorded in 1957 so (although it was co-written by Berry Gordy) it seems too early to be the Funk Bros/Jamerson. However, they are usually credited with Jackie Wilson's Higher and Higher but that was 1967.
 4.
It shares its new Home with me ......very nice Bass. Had a nice rehearsal yesterday. ( But i have to practice fretless ....) Thank you very much, Phil
Good luck with that. We all have to practice fretless.
 5.
I really don't get this 'must have an acoustic bass' thing. It's not MTV unplugged in 1993 anymore....
.... and one way or another it will be plugged in or nobody's gonna hear it.
 6.
Why are almost all new basses supplied with round wound strings when lots of players don't like them and they make the instrument sound completely different than with flats?
It used to be the other way around. I bought a new Fender Precision in 1976 and it came with flats as stock.
 7. Herbie Flowers has the same problem (if it is a problem) on his 1959 Jazz: It didn't stop him recording with it.
 8. Saw them outside GAK busking in Brighton today. They are playing at the Hydrant tonight but I can't make it.
 9.
a little too much dont ya think? joni's music didn't really need a lot going on. great playing though nonetheless. jungle line is one of my favourite songs. 'hissing of summer lawns' and 'blue' are both great albums.
I'd agree with what you're saying but the point I intended was that, nonetheless, I still preferred it to the solo stuff.
 10.
This whole thread could have been avoided if Pete had finished typing after the first line of his OP. That would have summed it all up.
Fair enough indeed.
 11.
I think the point was some people slag of his tone but shouldn't because it is iconic. I think there is sometimes something of the anti-hero thing going on here. 'Everyone likes X so I won't' kind of thing. Happens with all the great technicians on every instrument.
Rob, I take that point but surely one can recognise Jaco's historical importance and influence, his iconic status, his technical ability, but still not be personally enamoured of his playing or of his tone - which I know was not always the same. Those other people you mention - Hendrix, Coltrane, Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, Miles, Jimmy Blanton and Scott LaFaro - all move me much more than Jaco ever did.
 12.
Was going to say much the same - aren't 90% of all threads on the internet a "bit silly"
Probably 99%. However, I'm confused about the thread title and the OP. Is the implication that it is unkind not to like Jaco's tone?
 13.
Jaco's "burp" in all it's glory. The guy deserves respect from each and every member of BC
I much prefer this one:
 14.
Suffice to say if DD come on the radio I always hurriedly change station, I dislike their music that much. And damn it I've clicked on your for sale link again
Well I can't say that I listen to them either. Which sale link is that?
 15.

It does if you tick the box asking for outside cover.
 16. Looks very nice condition for a 62 and still has the mute. Also +1 on the Zombies and Chris White.
 17. You should note what Jean-Luc Pickguard says in your other thread that the JF324s may even be too long for the 30" EB3. I've used them on a 30" Dearmond Starfire but that has a longish distance from bridge to tail piece. Try measuring it up first.
 18.
I've recently noticed that some people are not fans of Jaco's sound. Fair enough.
Yes, I'm one of them. Fair enough, as you say.
Have these people judged this on Youtube clips or have actually listened to his sound on the albums?
I've listened to the albums. I tend to like him with Weather Report and with Joni Mitchell but not the solo stuff.
The back pickup sound on a Jazz bass cuts through a mix. It allows you to be heard.
Maybe, but it's neither the only thing that cuts through nor the only way to be heard.
It also requires a lot of pressure on the string, and good technique.
I bow to Jaco's technique which is way way ahead of mine but you don't have to play like he does to have good technique - and why exactly is requiring a lot of pressure on the string a good thing?
Try listening to Bernard Edwards, too.
Now you're talking - Bernard I like a lot.
 19.
Ooh that's nice, but is that Logo in the right position?
That's just about where it is on my 62 reissue - which probably proves nothing.
 20.
Is it ok to shorten a set of 34" bass strings to fit them on a short (30") EB3 type bass? I'm after a 2nd hand set of TI JF324 Jazz flats 43-106 and most of the sets that I've seen on sale are JF344 ones 43-100. I've looked on the Thomastik website and the AD and G strings are the same diameter as the JF344's just the E string is a little thinner than the short scale one . Also I've just measured the TI Jazz Flats on my Fender Mustang and the E string is JF344 thickness (.100") I presume thats because the strings go throught the body on a Mustang? Thanks Richard PS If anyone does have a spare set of these strings please let me know. Thanks
I don't have a spare set of JF324s but I think it would generally be unwise to put JF344s on a shorter scale bass. If you string through body or if the bass has a trapeze tailpiece it might be fine but you risk a broken string if you find your self winding the unsilked string around the tuner peg. The 30" EB3 will really want the 32" JF324s I think. The JF344s may work on a Mustang but I would have thought that JF324s would be better Are you saying you can't find the JF324s for sale on line? If so, try here: http://www.lordofthestrings.com/lots/RAPRD...t/11001620.html or even here: http://www.stringsdirect.co.uk/products/23...ale_bass_43_106
