In nervy moments (like when surrounded by dozens of bass players who are better than me!) I fall back on a small stock repertoire of bass lines that I won't screw up, London Calling being one of them On topic, the other ultra-recognisable bass line from the Clash has to be 'The Magnificent Seven' (yep, thats in my embarrassed-nervous bass player repertoire too)
My preferred technique when surrounded by other bassists who are undoubtedly better at it than I am is to get them to play Clash songs for me and then pretend I don't recognise them. I bet you don't remember what I played on your Shuker.
 2.
I bet if you played the bass intro bit on it's own most people would recognise it?
 3.
Dave at his last gig
Nice!
PS, I think it was me playing London Calling at SE BassBash
OK, it's out now. Clarky played London Calling brilliantly on my fretless and, with me being a total t*s*e* (and slightly hard of hearing, of course), I failed to recognise it.
 4.
It's not the bassline though its the guitar riff that people recognise.
There's a guitar riff in Deal or No Deal?
 5.
Fancy not knowing that one. You, you, you, Philistine..
I knew it when I was told what it was so obviously I blame the bassist concerned. I'm also slightly hard of hearing. I have actually played the song at a gig but obviously I'm unable to guarantee the accuracy of the line I played. But whatever line I did play, I am sure that hardly anyone recognised it.
 6.
You need to play the bass line stood on a Persian rug while the keyboard player stabs his Moog with a knife. So I'm not altogether surprised its not part of your repertoire, Dave
Steady on! I can get a Persian rug if I want to. Mind you I wouldn't fancy any of my band mates in possession of a knife.
 7.
Second movement of 'Karn Evil Nine' by Emerson, Lake and Palmer anyone?
So, that's KEN by ELP? I expect it's a surprise, but that's another one with which I have only limited familiarity.
 8.
Its funny, because sometimes BC is becoming similar to Talkbass to my eyes - after a while, folks who come here to post 'a recognisable bassline', will post their favourite tunes instead, that have nothing to do with being easily recognisable.. Classic
... and even less to do with 'Bass Lines That Everyone Recognises, Even the man in the street...'
 9.
The theme tune to neghbours
Another one I don't know. I must [s]get out[/s] stay in more.
 10.
I wasn't ignoring it. I just closed my eyes so I could concentrate. Yes, quite Macca-ish, IMO.
Are you sure you weren't having a little nap?
 11.
I know no one else has posted this http://www.myspace.com/ofmontreal The type of thing Beedster would enjoy.
13.
white rabbit, for sure: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XR8LFNUr3vw this scott walker track had some groundbreaking bass when it came out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-zgdGQB4S4
I really like both of those but I'd say over 99% of people wouldn't recognise either of the basslines. EDIT: I don't think they would recognise the songs let alone the basslines. EDIT 2: Inability to write sensible English.
 14.
Now you're being silly! It is a line/lick/riff played on the bass so by my definition it is a bassline; come on now, to say that it doesn't count because it is a 'melody line' is being a bit pedantic with the definition of bassline.
I didn't say it didn't count. I meant that it stands out because it is the melody line, so making people more likely to remember it. That's all, no pedantry intended. I stand by what I said although perhaps I ought to have made my meaning more explicit.
 15.
"Lust For Life" Iggy Pop.
Well, I know that one, but I must know about a hundred people who don't.
 16.
Actually non of my mates are Maiden fans and bar a few albums I wouldn't class my self as one I like them and think Steve Harris is a mighty bassist but . But I'm mighty disappointed that Phantom is the one song being picked on in the thread Is there any song everyone would know?? never mind the bassline? The Chain is probably the most recognised bass riff but play the rest of the song and no one knows it.
There are perhaps a few songs that many many people at least in the UK and US would know - for example, Happy Birthday to You, which the Guinness Book of Records cites as the most recognised song in the English language, then For He's a Jolly Good Fellow and Auld Lang Syne. In the section of The Chain that is most commonly recognised, the bass line operates as a melody line and not as a bass line as such even though it's played in the bass register.
 17.
I look better for the laser eye surgery
Have you had your hair done as well?
 18.
+1 What a strange thread. Most of these posts are just fantasy! Very few people who are not musicians would associate a line of music to a bass! To Joe Public it's just a song. They don't deconstruct a song they just listen to the whole.
Nicely put ... but I suspect, with many of the songs referred to here, Joe Public (whoever he is) hasn't even listened to the whole let alone memorised the bassline. Fantasy is correct.
 19.
Thats it everyone I know knows phantom ...
Does 'everyone I know' include your granny, the bloke in the corner shop, your cousin's boyfriend, that weird guy at work, and the violinist from the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra who you once bumped into down the pub? Or is it just your mates, who are also Iron Maiden fans?
 20.
I really can't be bothered to ignore this thread.
You should take as your motto: MUST TRY HARDER!
 21.
Maybe this thread should be renamed- Basslines that everyone recognises if..... A.... They're a certain age B.... Of a certain genre persuasion C.... Not Doddy or EssentialTension. Seriously though,I know alot of songs, but there are a bunch here that I don't,and I reckon that lots of other people wouldn't either-especially just from the Bassline.
There is another possibility: D.... They watch a lot of TV adverts
 22.
loser
Hey Clarky, standing on the right - or maybe it's the one in the middle - is Chris White, Zombie bass player: EDIT: It is the one in the middle.
 23.
On http://www.myspace.com/ofmontreal This line has really got to me, kinda Macca-ish but a bit more funky, just love the groove and the tone, kinda panicky sounding! Not my sort of music otherwise, but love that little line. No doubt someone will tell me it's a synth now C
Sorry to have ignored you so selfishly Chris. Agreed nice Macca-ish line.
 24.
Can't believe no one's said Muse yet (I think) - Hysteria & Time Is Running Out Massive Attack - Angel is very well known. At the very least, people will recognise it from some advert or another. A couple, perhaps not for the average man on the street, but your average metal punter at least: Megadeth - Peace Sells Metallica - For Whom The Bell Tolls (although I always wonder how many think that's a guitar part) Iron Maiden - Wrathchild

I wouldn't know any of these if you played them in full, let alone just the baselines.
Nor me - although I'm vaguely familiar with Massive Attack but not that song.
