Both the natural actor and the musician would be advised to learn to read, as this can only assist their quest in that field, is what I was trying to say (maybe i can read but not write)
That is how I understood you. Maybe I'm the one who can't write.
I have assumed "groove" as referred to in the OP is a reference to natural feel and talent, so I've called it "perfect dynamic groove" Which if you have is fantastic, and if you can read also, well you half way to somewhere i have not even packed for yet Surely we all agree groove is a gift, which alone is fantastic, but with theory also it would be much enhanced and honed
I used to know a pianist who had fantastic natural talent. He'd never had any lessons, never practiced, but he seemed able to play along with anything with a high level of taste, feel, and dexterity. However, he was wholly incapable of turning up for a rehearsal or a gig on time - that's if he showed up at all. (Slightly off topic: I've no idea what happened to him, I haven't seen him in 25 years but he owes me £150.)
I am not a reader, but I guess that no reader on here would suggest that just because you can sight read notes and timing, that it automatically means that person can play it with perfect dynamic groove I guess I stand to be correct by the readers I can read english, but that doesn't mean that if I read some lines out a hamlet play I can deliver those lines in a way that would amaze And someone with a natural talent for acting who could not read could listen to a tape of hamlet and then recite it much better than me But the non reading acting talent guy, would be advised to learn to read, just to make his life easier if he wishes to read plays Im talking b88888ocks, but then again we are debating natural feel over a learnt academic skill, they are not the same but can compliment each other in ways I wish i could but never will experience
So, if I want to be an actor, I'd be well advised to learn to read if I could possibly do so. And, if I'm a musician, whether or not I can play with 'perfect dynamic groove' (whatever that is) is not dependent upon whether I can or can not read notation.
Thanks for posting. Looking forward to seeing the '51 P. Skyline version on the way, too...
That's the one that would interest me. I bet the Skyline will be a while yet.
Maybe just as well that I pronounce Fodera as Fedora if that's how they get ya then.
Oh no ... now I'll have to get one ... how much are they?
I'd agree with that, but can anyone think of any famous band where any of the individual members have gone on to bigger things?
Big Brother and the Holding Company and Janis Joplin - even if she was dead within a couple of years of leaving them.
Fair enough clever clogs. It'll always be Lak-land to me though... ... Unless I get one and turn pedant.
Once I knew how to pronounce it ... I just had to have one.
Following on from Silddx's thread, what do you think is more important? I think it's great to have theory knowledge, but I also think being able to play in time with a great groove is the most important aspect of bass playing, especially in a live situation. Don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing...
It may not mean a thing if it ain't got that swing ... but the swing on it's own is not enough.
I guess that ends the debate as to whether it is pronounced Lak-land (like I thought) or Lake-land.
Well, as is explained on the Lākland website, it's named after Dan Lakin (pronounced 'lake-in') and Hugh MacFarland. That's why there is a macron over the first 'a' (e.g. Lākland) on the headstocks.
Er - fairly sure. Let me have a think about it. Yes, absolutely abhorrent. Except in certain circumstances.
Absolutely!
-
Any attempt to take an absolute and final position on (Theory / Reading / Whatever) versus (Feel / Groove / Whatever) is doomed to ignominious ridicule. Because the value of a particular skill or a specific approach is not a universal constant. It is dependant on context and circumstance. There are just too many variables for anyone to state that with honest confidence that one approach or the other is best - or even mildly preferable - without honourably adding the caveat that each individual's mileage may vary. Absolutism is an abhorrence.
Are you absolutely sure about that?

The Very Definition of "Optimistic"
That's the very definition of Care In The Community. Jon.
Surely you mean Rare In The Community - didn't you read that this is a ghost. -
Very very nice Clarky ... but where is your wife sleeping?

With my band any new song (whether it's one written ourselves or by someone else) usually gets gigged fairly quickly or not at all.
I bought these on eBay for my 51P but they arrived in the mail just as I decided to sell the bass. Cost me £21 including post from US (can't get them in UK, leastways I couldn't find them). £20 posted anyone? Here's the ebay link http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...e=STRK:MEWNX:IT
Clarky, I'll have them if they are still available. How's your hand?

Chris Squire - Would he have been better as a reader?
EssentialTension replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
Yes but come on guys! This is pretty basic stuff. I know what things sound like and can sometimes put names to them, it's not rocket salad is it, for someone who's played that long. Can you tell the sound of a minor scale from a major? Most musicians can. BUT, if Wakeman said "Chris! Would an Ab Diminished scale work over a D Minor chord sequence modulating into E Major?" would he be able to answer? That's the sort of thing I mean by THEORY. Not, knowing the sound of a whole tone scale, most of us could probably sing that couldn't we?
Nige, it may be pretty basic but it's still theory. I have to say these threads are amongst the most depressing on BC - and that's saying something. -
Randall & Hopkirk, The Professionals, WWF
EssentialTension replied to iconic's topic in General Discussion
Not much of a list.... ...Guy Pratt's father Mike, played Randall in....Randall & Hopkirk... Bodie (Lewis Collins) ala The Professional's, played drums and bass and was going to audition for the Beatles drummer but decided to carry on with hairdressing instead...allegedly... .....Ironside was on TV next but all I know I that Raymond Burr didn't... Hulk Hogan... Richard Hammond Top Gear dwarf...well he did for charity... Cap'n Jack Sparrow... any others out there...?
Mike Pratt also wrote songs with Lionel Bart for Tommy Steele in the late fifties and early sixties. I believe he also played piano in Steele's backing band. Lewis Collins played bass with sixties beat combo The Mojos. -
..... McCartney is actually a dynamite player. Very grounded, very solid and groovy but also fantastically creative.
Grounded ... solid ... groovy ... creative. Very nicely stated Jake, but I want to add one word and the word is influential. But the Macca/Beatles haters will be along soon I'm sure.

Chris Squire - Would he have been better as a reader?
EssentialTension replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
So watching the linked video with Chris he plays something and then says that's an inversion. Right there he's in the top few % of all performing musicians for theory knowledge. He also says he couldn't just rip off a diminished scale but he knows the sound of one. How many rock greats even know there is a diminished scale or two? I think his humility is being mistaken for ignorance here, he clearly has a decent grasp of theory that is well above average.
Thank you for recognising that. It's exactly why I posted the video. -
