My First Ever Walking Bass Line - Improvised with my band.
EssentialTension replied to xilddx's topic in Recording
Only if you're American! US: skeptic; UK: sceptic. Vive la différence!
Yes, British usage is 'sceptic', 'sceptical' and 'scepticism'. -
They will deal with you direct for USA models.
Yes, any finish you like, and a variety of one-off variations available - and a long wait.

Apparently the pic is of a custom-build Lakland did, so I don't know whether the blocks and matching headstock would end up as standard, especially if it ever makes it to Skyline.
-
Looks nice.
If the version in the pic is anything to go by, then I think they have the colour spot on.
That's bloody lovely! I want..... Where did you find the info?
AT the LOG (Lakland Owners Group) forum: http://www.laklandowners.com/joomla/index....=3&id=16365

Lakland are going to add a '51 style Precision to their catalogue. It will be US only at first, but maybe Skyline later.
Could some of you helpful chaps stick your CV Squiers on some scales and tell me how much they weigh, please?
My CV Jazz, wearing Wizard 64 pickups, Schaller straplocks, and La Bella Black Nylons, weighs in at 8.9lbs

Bilbo's campaign for the elimination of bad jazz...
EssentialTension replied to Bilbo's topic in Gigs
It was a rock band that had its faults but it was ok and sounded like a rock band. It was rehearsed and it was tight (I was 17, the rest of the band were 30+). We did a Radio One session three months later so it couldn't have been that bad. Seriously, though. Check this out and tell me I am wrong. The piano solo at 1.00 is a doozy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnrhE5ARc_w...feature=related This is even better... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2fl1_kqsas&NR=1
Apologies to anyone involved, but that was bad. -

EssentialTension replied to Bilbo's topic in Gigs
I wonder what you think of this Bilbo? yours truly on a twenties gig, what I love about this gig is how the guys just play it right, they are all good players in my view and do what is right for the gig each of them is capable of playing very convincingly in a myriad of settings. I get your point regarding quality but I get the feeling you'd not like to do this gig? am I wrong?
I really liked that. Are the two women dancing at the front with the band? -
I have a couple of vastly different sized green ball ends here, different style of ball, so someone else must colour them.
I believe Giannini, Hartke & DR, and maybe others. D'Addario are now making Fender's strings so possibly those too.

Playing bass wearing black silk gloves - for BETTER TONE
EssentialTension replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
I've worn a small hole in the right hand index finger.
Sort of a glove blister? -
Sounded pretty good to me although, as others said, the bass could cut through a little more.
I listened to that again with better headphones and I take back what I said about the bass not cutting through.

new Basschatter Socrates says hello . . .
hmm, no . . . is there something I should know? I spotted a bit of a motorbike thing going on - perhaps you mean bike gloves?? really nice guy, and nice to meet a local Basschatter too . . . but now after trying out his two lovely Warwicks I'm on the lookout for one myself (if I can fit it in with the three basses, three six-strings and a ukulele . . . oh and a toddler and a girlfriend and all that other stuff . . .)
You can get up to date on Nigel's gloves in this thread: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=90264 -

Today I played Herbie Flower's 1959 Jazz Bass
EssentialTension replied to Plux_the_Duck's topic in Bass Guitars
Herbie hasn't had a manufacturer make a Signature bass (which is a shame, can you imagine a Fender Custom Shop model with the quality of the Pino?) so I got one built. It's Lake Placid Blue but not as dark as that 59. 7.5 inch radius Rio Rosewood fingerboard. It's strung with Trubass 88s. Pickups are Fralins. The custom switch is a series/parallel switcher. I've since removed the thumbrest.
That looks rather lovely. I guess if there was a Fender Custom Shop version it would probably be a relic like the Pino. -
new Basschatter Socrates says hello . . .
EssentialTension replied to socrates's topic in Introductions
Hello Socrates, welcome to Basschat. I'm from Birmingham too (although I'd left before your bands were playing there) and I teach philosophy too (although no PhD) so we have some things in common. -
Looks great Wes, very nicely done.
Looking back I think that's one of the things I really liked about it.
I can't have disliked it very much because I had it for over twenty years - longest I've ever had any bass.
-
Thanks, I've got my new born baby in one arm, so you've saved me some work
You're welcome. There are almost certainly many more - those were merely the first three I found.
Hey folks, I am considering moving to a short or med scale bass. I haven't been able to play one yet but I thought I would ask first what you folks thought. What are your experiences with the shorter scales? What do they offer in ways of tonality and playability? Will appreciate all advice. Cheers, Tom
You do need to try some. They vary just as much as 34" scale basses do.
As I've posted elsewhere on the forum, I had an Aria TSB550N which was 32" medium scale, with a through neck, and I loved it. Very comfortable.
I had an Aria TSB550 too. It's a very nice bass. My one criticism of it would be the narrow string spacing at the bridge but that might not bother you.
I couldn't happier after making the move to shorties after 20+ years of playing. Do a search, as this topic is cropping up more often on BC and quite a few threads discuss the pros and cons of the move
Here you go: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=97762 http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=95334 http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=90957
Hi John, I'm sorry I missed that question. The board is glued on rather than one piece, frets are I'm pretty sure, medium jumbo not sure about the radius, sorry I don't know how to tell. HTH, Tom.
The radius on these is 9.5" (241mm) and the frets are medium jumbo.
