careful when offering your "opinion"
EssentialTension replied to witterth's topic in General Discussion
Oh,I see where your coming from. In this case there was/still is a "team" ethos, and in fairness to the Drummer in question he was more "into" carrying round big gear and the resultant "tone" etc than I ever could have been (a real "gear" head if you know what I mean) at the end of the day Ive no real doubt this guy(drummer) did his best to "defend" me,as if I needed it. thats the type of guy he is. to be honest he is a friend truth to tell, it just didnt fit my standpoint to simply say: "punter slagged me of and mate/drummer didnt do enough to stop it" cos that aint the case, because he did. but I was saying why should he? ....telling me about it was just being honesty really! not some macheovellian scheme. Ill repeat, the slagging I got was quite intense it was imparted with honesty cos thats the type of guy this drummer is... quite a nice chap!! I know contradict myself in some ways..but..... I really shouldnt have started this should I? the "punter was just after my gig, I think, (which he'd never get! Ha Ha! )
OK, that makes sense. -

And £549 at GAK - which sounds like more than I'd want to pay. -
There are a load of cool transcriptions of basslines by guys like 'Duck' Dunn,Jerry Jemmott, Rocco Prestia and others here..... http://pagesperso-orange.fr/freebasspart.p...ass_Players.htm
That's an excellent resource. I've not come across that before. Thanks.
Very pretty bass - hope it doesn't turn out to be a Photoshop fantasy... But if it does, go buy a Stagguar (or is that a Jagstagg?) for £130. And take a chill pill! Jon.
To me, it does look like a photoshop fantasy - the P and J pickups are different colours. Here's that Stagg Vintage M series:
We wernt "mates" ET, just work colleagues, so as I say, why should he defend me? if you see what I mean? This guy was the "herbert" OTPJ talks about I suppose. I do try, where possible to keep things "out " of work as far too often bands turn into "fight club" and thats no good for anyone. or even, worse case senario "brokeback mountain!!!" eh? quim?
Ok, I know these things differ from one band to another but a band is a team and I would defend the rest of my team and expect them to defend me in public - and then, in private, tell me to my face what they thought I was doing wrong. If one of my team started telling me what some punter thought (friend of theirs or not) I'd be saying, 'Hang on, never mind the punter, what do you think?' -
Best value/lightweight/great tone combo
EssentialTension replied to Musicman20's topic in Amps and Cabs
Now, there is no need to vote for the Mesa Walkabout. We all know they are fantastic.
Oh, OK.
It would HAVE to be: Small Light Great clear tone (as it wont be used to for loud rock bands, Id like it to be very clear and crisp) iPod input Ability to play small gigs (against a quiet drummer) Good value What works for you for small gigs and home practice?
Phil Jones Bass Briefcase Small - yes Light - yes Great clear tone - yes iPod input - no, but does have headphone out Ability to play small gigs - yes, as long as the drummer understands the word small Good value - maybe And also runs on a battery if you want to busk in the street. -
That looks very nice.

Precision, flatwounds (preferably old), tone rolled off by about three-quarters, amp eq flat with adjustments to allow for the room acoustics. Fingers with very short nails somewhere between the pickup and the end of the neck. Heaven.

Fitting A Short Scale Neck To A P Bass - Nooo!
EssentialTension replied to ezbass's topic in Repairs and Technical
Didn't Lakland announce recently that they'd be producing short scale necks that could be fitted to their existing models? I wondered about scale etc when I read it.
There's a Lakland short-scale (30") Decade but US only (not Skyline at the moment) which I think uses a standard Decade body with an 18 fret neck. I guess the short-scale neck will have been designed to achieve the correct scale length without moving the bridge. If you're just going to pop on any old short scale neck it ain't going to work without repositioning the bridge - unless you just happen to get lucky, which I doubt. -
As I say the ding makes it hard to put a price on this hence me thinking Ebay is the best way forward.
Thanks for the pics, and no offence, but that ding does look slightly unpleasant. Is it as bad as it looks? Given that I'm not desperate I probably wouldn't go for that.

JV Basses, are they really worth it?

Playing in 2 bands at the same time?
EssentialTension replied to jezzaboy's topic in General Discussion
I'm only in one band at the moment but have often been in two (or even three). First in the diary is the rule. -
The necks is a tricky one and the reason I haven't listed it is I don't really know what it's worth, It's a Japanese one I imported with a satin rather then hi gloss finish to it, when it arrived it had a ding in the back of an otherwise excellent neck. I was thinking it might be better to Ebay this but if you want to see pics let me know. Cheers R.
I wouldn't mind seeing some pics if you have them.

Did you start out playing guitar
EssentialTension replied to PaulWarning's topic in General Discussion
1 First, I had a guitar and learnt a few chords. 2 Messed around on another guitar with two strings (high B and E) missing. 3 Found myself in a band as a bassist with a Hofner 185/Artist 4 Learned to play bass. 5 Learned to play guitar. 6 Carried on learning to play bass. 7 These days I hardly ever pick up a guitar (although I can still knock out some rhythm) unless I want to work out the chords to something.
