1.
We wernt "mates" ET, just work colleagues, so as I say, why should he defend me? if you see what I mean? This guy was the "herbert" OTPJ talks about I suppose. I do try, where possible to keep things "out " of work as far too often bands turn into "fight club" and thats no good for anyone. or even, worse case senario "brokeback mountain!!!" eh? quim?
Ok, I know these things differ from one band to another but a band is a team and I would defend the rest of my team and expect them to defend me in public - and then, in private, tell me to my face what they thought I was doing wrong. If one of my team started telling me what some punter thought (friend of theirs or not) I'd be saying, 'Hang on, never mind the punter, what do you think?'
 2.
Now, there is no need to vote for the Mesa Walkabout. We all know they are fantastic.
Oh, OK.
It would HAVE to be: Small Light Great clear tone (as it wont be used to for loud rock bands, Id like it to be very clear and crisp) iPod input Ability to play small gigs (against a quiet drummer) Good value What works for you for small gigs and home practice?
Phil Jones Bass Briefcase Small - yes Light - yes Great clear tone - yes iPod input - no, but does have headphone out Ability to play small gigs - yes, as long as the drummer understands the word small Good value - maybe And also runs on a battery if you want to busk in the street.
 3. That looks very nice.
 4. Precision, flatwounds (preferably old), tone rolled off by about three-quarters, amp eq flat with adjustments to allow for the room acoustics. Fingers with very short nails somewhere between the pickup and the end of the neck. Heaven.
 5.
Didn't Lakland announce recently that they'd be producing short scale necks that could be fitted to their existing models? I wondered about scale etc when I read it.
There's a Lakland short-scale (30") Decade but US only (not Skyline at the moment) which I think uses a standard Decade body with an 18 fret neck. I guess the short-scale neck will have been designed to achieve the correct scale length without moving the bridge. If you're just going to pop on any old short scale neck it ain't going to work without repositioning the bridge - unless you just happen to get lucky, which I doubt.
 6.
As I say the ding makes it hard to put a price on this hence me thinking Ebay is the best way forward.
Thanks for the pics, and no offence, but that ding does look slightly unpleasant. Is it as bad as it looks? Given that I'm not desperate I probably wouldn't go for that.
 7.
who said the drummer was a friend? why should he defend me? (BTW)
Why shouldn't he defend you?
 8.
I'd question the motives of your "friend" who told you all this.
Me too - why wasn't he defending you?
 9. Precision – got it Jazz – got it Fretless – got it Something a little bit different but still retro – got it Acoustic – got it Eub – got it Gas – hmmm ... don’t seem to have it
 10.
Is JV the same as the "silver series"?
Silver series are 1990s.
 11. I'm only in one band at the moment but have often been in two (or even three). First in the diary is the rule.
 12.
The necks is a tricky one and the reason I haven't listed it is I don't really know what it's worth, It's a Japanese one I imported with a satin rather then hi gloss finish to it, when it arrived it had a ding in the back of an otherwise excellent neck. I was thinking it might be better to Ebay this but if you want to see pics let me know. Cheers R.
I wouldn't mind seeing some pics if you have them.
 13.
I've been looking to get hold of some LaBella flats but I'm struggling to find them anywhere.
La Bella flats in stock at Lord of the Strings - I just got some myself.
 14. 1 First, I had a guitar and learnt a few chords. 2 Messed around on another guitar with two strings (high B and E) missing. 3 Found myself in a band as a bassist with a Hofner 185/Artist 4 Learned to play bass. 5 Learned to play guitar. 6 Carried on learning to play bass. 7 These days I hardly ever pick up a guitar (although I can still knock out some rhythm) unless I want to work out the chords to something.
 15.
Oh - OK, it said it may be blocked in some countries. Good grief, can't a guy pay a little tribute to a bass hero anymore Here you go...just uploading now: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1241008/Music/thinkingofyou.wmv
Very good, interesting to see it done but I'm still struggling with it. I'm cool with the Stax/Atlantic/Motown/etc stuff but when it gets the disco octaves I'm much more uncomfortable - both my hands and my mind seem to be resistant, it doesn't come naturally.
 16. Walking lines can often work in ska. I'd recommend Ed Friedland's Reggae Bass (which should have been called Jamaican Bass).
 17. OK, got Stuart Clayton's notation for it now - got to crack it later today.
 18.
No they don't take the money until it's in stock, to be honest I had forgotten all about it until i spotted this thread. if yours turns up then maybe I'll cancel my Amazon order and go direct to Bassline. R.
It arrived this morning from Bassline.
 19.
I ordered it about 18 months ago from Amazon and still no sign of it
Did Amazon take your money? I ordered it from Bassline a few days ago and I've had an email saying it was sent Royal Mail first class packet but no sign yet - maybe tomorrow.
 20.
we did this at the ICMP diploma. may be worth giving dave marks and crew a PM, tho may be copyrite etc... i have a paper version but no scanner.
Sorry to be stupid but who is Dave Marks?
Incidentally one of my favourite songs to play on bass!
Incidentally I'm hating playing it - probably because I can't do it - I'm also hating listening to it.
from memory: verse (mostly octaves) F (before bar) G then D then Eb then Bb then back to F and repeat before chorus go from the Bb to B to C to F to G chorus (not octaves) Eb B F (fills on F... do them by ear!) thats the basics i think. god i am bad at describing music! can we have someone better at this to help out? r
Thanks for that. That's similar to what I reckoned: the verse - Gm-Dm-Eb-Bb-Cm-F-Bb, and the chorus - Eb-Bb-Eb-Bb. EDIT:for mixing up verse ending and chorus ending
 21.
How about one of these
No, he needs one of these:
 22. First, I'd have to really really like the band to put up with being told how to tune my bass. Second, if I did feel I needed a low Eb or a low D on some songs I'd get a D-tuner and use it only on songs that I felt needed low Eb or D. Otherwise I'd just play using EADG. Third, if there were a lot of songs that need the lower notes then a five string is the answer - but I'd be hard pressed to be convinced that the bass part to the songs couldn't be played quite effectively on a four string while tuned EADG. Fourth, I'd also be very hard pressed to be convinced to use a five string - but banning them is nuts.
